Working out with your pets. An interview with fitness trainer Gunner Peterson

If you truly love your pets, you've got to place a high priority on their health. Lying around all day isn't good for anyone - especially our sweet animals which were designed for action. In this video interview (below), Hollywood fitness trainer, Gunnar Peterson and I chat about how and why we should get our pets up and active. Is childrens heath saved from the Hostess closure?

The unfortunate event viewed by many that the Hostess Brands closing their doors for good as of today November 16, 2012. What does this mean for the thousands of children that have been hearing about the Twinkie product for years? It means they will indeed be able to avoid eating the product in the future from the famous brand. According to a CNN Money article, the CEO Greg Rayburn expresses the company will be moving forward in bankruptcy.

What does this mean for those who loved the Twinkie and other Hostess products? Well fear not Twinkie and Ho Ho lovers, the odds of the Twinkie dying down forever are slim to none, no pun intended. Someday someone may bring the Hostess brand name off the recipes for the beloved items and recreate them under their own brand name.

While this is a sad day for the Twinkie lovers, children really better off with the Twinkie not being sold any longer. Through the many unhealthy snacks that are on the market, perhaps the death of the Twinkie will help children and parents turn to healthier choices such as fruit or yogurt parfaits. A healthy snack will help the children become more active, as well as be able to make healthier choices as they are older.

Weight Problems May be linked to Fight or Flight Response

Recent studies have shown that many social and psychological problems that we deal with into today's society have a lot to do with the flight or fight response. It is in our nature that when a problem arises that we instinctively do one of two things, either fight or flight. But in today's world, neither one of these options are obtainable in many situations. And to do either one of these things are frowned upon in our society. So sadly, many people have developed an unhealthy alternative, a third option, and that is to feed ourselves when trouble arises. Following are seven steps that can serve as tips for your own weight loss program. The first thing that one must understand is that losing weight and losing fat is not the same. This third option was taught to us as young children by our families. As children, we were told to sit in our seats and to not physically fight another person, as the punishments would be severe. Although it is correct, that in a more civilized society, we can't go around hitting and running away every time there is a problem, a more excepaible alternative however, was never taught, and never developed in our society. So as a result, people were left on their own, trying to deal with conflicts the best way they new how, with whatever was at their disposal And in the US food, is the most abundant. Fast food places have sprung up everywhere, making it even more available, even on the go, without having to take the time to cook it. So it's makes the quickest and easiest alternative. Even people who don't have money for other things, can obtain food.

Food has the ability to make you forget about conflicts and bad feelings if only for a little while. It serves as momentary distraction, allowing us to bury the pain. But the problem with burying it, is that it always comes back to the surface, and when it does, we try to bury it again with more food. And the better it tastes to us, the sweeter it is, the more effect it has with the burying process.

So how can we as individuals, turn this over eating habit around? How can we effectively deal with conflicts without turning to food? The best way is to go back to our instincts using the fight or flight response, but modifying it in a more acceptable way.

Instead of grabbing food, use the fight response, but not in a way that would hurt others. Using this response will get the issues out into the open and dealt with so they are gone, instead of being buried to resurface sometime later. Keeping a journal would help with this. Just right down all the things you would want to say to the other person. Write down about 5 different ways or ideas that you would want to present. Choose the best one you want to go with and deliver it to that person, in a number of different formats. Through mail, email, phone etc. If the person is difficult and completely unreasonable, then write these drafts, choose the best one, then destroy it, sending it out to the wind. Then you may consider severing contacts with this person, if at all possible.

When you are in a situation, a conflict that's getting out of control, the flight response could be used in a more subtle way. It's good to leave the room to clear the air for awhile to allow you and the other person to think. You could find a reason to leave the room, like run an errand, take a break or use the restroom. When you do this, take several deep breaths and allow yourself to clear your mind. Try to avoid them for the day, if at all possible. Then go home and use your journal to come up with ideas or solutions to solve the problem. Your goal is to come up with a way to change the situation for the next day, even if it's just a small positive step in the right direction. The bottom line is working on the issues instead of burying them, go a long way in over coming the habit of over eating.

Body after baby: Real moms weigh in on what worked

Regardless of how quickly you initially bounce back after having a baby (thanks, in part, to breastfeeding and other post-delivery hormonal shifts that boost metabolism), theres usually an inevitable plateau of wont-budge pounds with which youll have to contend.

But lets get one thing straight: Were promoting being healthy, feeling good about yourself and instilling good habits, rather than perpetuating some unattainable, unrealistic standard here.

I recently provided a few tips on the topic, but as many moms know, there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to reclaiming your pre-baby body. So why not ask the experts themselves?

Here are a few strategies for success that helped these fit-minded moms get back in the saddle.

Lindsey, mother of two, in Oregon:

First, I ate a balanced breakfast to ward off the temptation to mindlessly graze on my childrens goldfish. Second, just get moving! I did Stroller Strides, and the incorporation of intervals, cardio and resistance training all while sweating it out with other moms was awesome. Finally, dont feel guilty for cutting a chunk out of your busy and hectic day tofocus on your own health and happiness.

Aleksandra, mother of one, in Michigan:

Initially after I had my son, I allowed myself the time to adjust to a new role and didnt worry about my body or weight. Once I had a good handle on my new life, I began meal planning to take the stress out of what to eat. It keeps me eating well even when I cant squeeze a workout in, and it got me back to my pre-pregnancy weight fast. Our bodies can do amazing things with the right fuel!

I have two tips for getting your pre-baby body back: First, eat well and exercise (if possible) during your pregnancy. Swimming is a great cardiovascular work-out for later stages of pregnancy because its low-impact. Second, nursing has many health benefits for mom and baby, AND it burns a ton of calories!

If youre a mom who exercises intensely and is used to mega-calorie-burning workouts, breastfeeding doesnt compare. It does burn calories, so its a nice little addition, especially when youre slowly getting back into shape. But, exercise and diet should still be considered important and necessary if a mother wants her pre-baby body to return.

Megan, mother of three, in Oregon:

I have two things that keep me on track: One, I always eat a protein-packed breakfast. I try to fuel myself before the kids get up or else Im rushed and frazzled and dont take the time to be intentional about food. And two, I play with the kids! We have dance parties, run around outside playing games, take tons of power walks and are just a really active family.

Dr. Arthur Agatston explains his South Beach Diet Gluten Solution to Dr. Oz (Video)

Eating a gluten-free diet is nothing new to South Beach Diet creator Dr. Arthur Agatston. His signature weight-loss plan avoids grains for the first phase, and that is the basis for the latest book The South Beach Diet Gluten Solution (Rodale, $25.99), which he discussed on todays Dr. Oz Show.

Dr. Agatston talked about his latest book and weight-loss plan with Dr. Oz today, in a new episode slipped into a week of reruns, and discussed how avoiding gluten can lead to improved health and weight loss.

Some of the South Beach Diet favorite snacks were showcased on Mondays show, including the ricotta parfaits and the ubiquitous fudge pops, which Dr. Oz called a cheat. Dr. Agatston explains the Gluten Trifecta of symptoms that can affect your health and stall weight loss: inflammation, diminished nutrient absorption, and an autoimmune response.

By cutting out or vastly reducing gluten, Dr. Agatston says conditions such as fatigue, headaches, skin rashes, reflux, and muscle aches, can be greatly improved if the person is truly gluten sensitive.

The books Gluten Solution Program is two phases, just like the original South Beach Diet. The first two-week phase removes all wheat and grains from the diet, and the second phase reintroduces gluten-free grain-based foods, such as quinoa, corn tortillas, rice pasta, buckwheat flour, and popcorn.

The book includes 20-gluten free recipes including dishes such as Double Chocolate Cupcakes, Orange-Blueberry Breakfast Muffins, and Lemon Polenta Cake.

What does a dietitian serve for Thanksgiving?

It is about one week until Thanksgiving. The local grocery store was crowded early this morning with shoppers buying turkeys and other food items for next week. Many shoppers clutched lists and coupons and were intently reading labels while looking for the best buys. And I was right there in the thick of it.

People are often curious about what a nutritionist will serve for a holiday meal. Nuts and twigs or will she indulge? How about a little of both?

Our family Thanksgiving meal varies from year to year, depending whether or not the chief cook and bottle washer feels like experimenting with new recipes. Variations to the menu also depend on whether the family members are game for a few surprises.

The general idea is to serve turkey with various sides. These sides usually include stuffing, sweet potatoes, twice-baked potatoes, green vegetables (green beans, limas, or peas), sweet-sour red cabbage, dinner rolls, gravy, assorted relishes (carrots, pickles, celery, olives), and, of course, pumpkin pie with a topping. Sounds traditional, right? And with a few modifications, the meal is less damaging to the waistline.

  • Usually the turkey is just the breast portion. This size works well with our family. Sprinkling rosemary and thyme on the turkey or inserting the herbs with garlic under the skin before baking adds a tasty touch to the white meat. Basting the turkey with juice is another way to easily add flavor.
  • Stuffing is a mix of white and whole wheat breads, browned and drained turkey sausage, whole egg, onion, celery, vegetable or chicken broth, and herbs to taste.
  • The sweet potatoes are baked in the skin and adorned at the plate with the individuals preference of reduced fat spread and/or gravy. No one really misses the marshmallows or sugary additions found in potato casserole recipes.
  • Twice baked potatoes are prepared with a mix of Neufchatel cheese and low-fat sour cream. And no salt or butter is added to any food when prepared. I let the guests decide on what they want to add.
  • Veggies, such as green beans, are also prepared without any additions except for toasted almonds or other nuts. Toasting brings out the flavors of the nuts which then compliment the vegetable.
  • Dinner rolls are homemade. I heard a few sighsshe is taking this low fat stuff too far. Well, I do add a full-fat pecan pie to the dessert menu that more than makes up for any fat-reduced item in the meal.

This year I may experiment with Brussels sprouts. There are several tempting recipes to mull over. Simply browning the vegetable brings out its sweetness. And coffees flavored with seasonal spices are another treat that I have yet to experience. Sounds like a yummy way to enjoy that second piece of pie.

Some processed foods you may not have known about being white breads and white rice, and canned fruits are processed as well since they have to be heated to kill the bacteria. This kind of food is a no-go with the Primal Burn fat loss program, which provides you with the details necessary for picking your foods for the week.

  • Numerous books are provided to go over the details fully.

Cons

  • Not written by a person with any education in the health and fitness fields i.e. Burge is not a nutritionist, so why can he make a book about nutrition?
  • The same material found in other well known dieting books. Just re-worded and placed in different areas.
  • Content is not very organized and flows unevenly for the viewer as far as the program goes.
  • General information you could have found on the Internet.

Dr. Oz and Joe Cross unveil three-day weight loss juice cleanse (Photos)

"Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead:" That's how documentary filmmaker and health advocate Joe Cross felt when he began filming that ground-breaking film (for details on "Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead," click here). Feel the squeeze: 4 benefits of compression gear for athletes
