7 holiday weight loss tips

Most people are pretty focused on the daily calories they consume when trying to lose weight, and they should be. But did you know that you can probably watch the pounds drop a lot faster if you also focus on the total number of carbohydrates you are consuming this season?

The USDA daily value for carbohydrates in a diet of 2000 calories is 300 grams; for 2500 calories, it is 375 grams. To give you a perspective, a typical 1-oz. slice of bread averages 20 grams of carbs. Another perspectivethe typical diabetic who is not on insulin shots (e.g., controlling diabetes through diet and exercise) is told to consume between 135 and 180 grams of carbs a day, or roughly no more than half of the non-diabetics diet. Doctors caution that anything less than 120 carb grams a day should be taken only on the advice of a medical professional. Your body needs carbs, just as it needs protein and fats. But we all know that there are good carbs/proteins/fats, and there are bad ones.

Diabetics have learned that a diet that is rich in the good carbs is literally a life saver. And, when first embarking on a diet of restricted carbs, diabetics will drop pounds pretty easily without sacrificing calories or taste. So it goes to reason that reducing your carbs during this time should help with holiday weight loss. So, what can you do this season to prevent weight gain?

1. Cut the carbs! Keep a running total of your daily carb intake, and dont go below 135 grams or above 180. If you are eating food from packages, the carb count will be on the package. Otherwise, you will need to look up the count. You can look up carb counts here.

2. Get real about portion size. If you are eating out a lot this holiday season, know that YOUR TYPICAL RESTAURANT ENTRE CONTAINS ENOUGH FOOD FOR 3 PEOPLE. Ask for a take-home box at the time you order your meal. Eat a single portion and save the rest for later.

3. Beef up your exercise routine. If you are only doing 30 minutes a day, you are only maintaining your current weight. That is good, but if you want to lose weigh, you need to bump that up to 45 minutes.

4. Besides counting carbs, keep tabs on your calories. While 1200 to 2000 calories a day may seem low, you can really eat quite well on that total, and be full and satisfied. If you are not exercising at all, you do need to restrict your intake. Or, you willif you havent already figured this one outgain weight. Just two small butter cookies, 24 grams, (an ounce is 28 grams) are killers110 calories, and 18 grams of carbs. And they are gone in two bites! Be very selective as to what you eat, and savor it well. Dont waste carbs or calories on food that you absolutely do not love.

5. Too many office parties? First, drink a cup or two of water before you indulge. Peruse the food table and decide what you will eat, and only put that on your plate. Taking more than two of anything is just plain stupid when you are trying to lose weight.

6. Cut back on your bread intake. That also includes pastries and muffins (some of which are north of 600 calories!). Used to having two slices of bread with your breakfast? Eat just one. Always have a sandwich at lunch? Then cut out the bread you normally eat at breakfast. And dont forget to limit your intake of crackers and dips. When you fool yourself into thinking that you can eat like a pig during the holiday season, you are fooling no onenot the scales, not your friends, not your family, not your doctor, and most of all, not yourself.

Are you are in denial and using excuses such as the holiday season to feed your unhealthy habit? Or that you don't have time to 'start a diet' or eat healthy now? You need to be true to yourself and ask: Do I want to live longer?

Ponder this thought as you continue to come up with excuses on why you have not gotten serious about losing weight: Studies have shown that obesity cuts your life short by at least 10 years.

If all this is too much for you to handle this season, then consider just not gaining, versus trying to lose. And if that isnt enough, as you eat your way through each day, ask yourself: Am I adding to my life or am I shortening it? The choice is yours!.

We talk with trainer Chris Powell about book 'Choose More, Lose More for Life' (Video)

Chris Powells new book Choose More Lose More for Life (Hyperion, $24.99), which hit bookstores Tuesday, is based on the carb-cycling principles he introduced in his 2011 book Choose to Lose. This time, the cycles are more customized: easy, classic, turbo and fit. We talked with the trainer and host of Extreme Weight Loss on Wednesday about the method of weight loss and how it works.

Carb cycling has been around for 30-something years, he said in our phone interview. Physique athletes and the fitness industry found it an effective way to lean out before they get on stage so when I introduced the first book, I wanted to go into more detail on customizing cycles but theres so much information to give, it just wasnt the right time or the place. Weight loss can be tricky the first 20 pounds act very differently than the last 20 pounds, he said.

If theyre just beginning their weight loss journey to lose 20 pounds, its pretty efficient weight actually comes off at a decent pace. Usually we can lose about 1 to 2 percent of their body weight every week, he said. But if its the last 20 pounds, and their body is already extremely efficient, thats a whole other monster and weve gotta get tricky, weve gotta get creative and flexible in our approach, because you really have to look at what theyve done to date and see what their body has adapted to so that we can actually throw some kind of new stimulus in there so we can get the response that we need.

And thats the beauty of carb cycling, Powell said.

Your body adapts to exercise and at the same time it also adapts to your diet, he said. With carb cycling, you can switch it up and once again the bodys going to have to go through this adaptation phase, in which we can get a good response. Anytime they begin to slow down, like the last 20 pounds, we can start to really tweak that cycle several different ways just to get it moving.

Carb cycling is also used with the people featured on Extreme Weight Loss, which has its season 3 premiere on ABC on Tuesday, May 28. (Yep, the show has undergone a name change.) The people on the show, theyre so active that we have most of them following the fit cycle. Its higher in carbohydrates strictly because theyre moving so much throughout the process they simply need more carbohydrates to fuel their muscle movement.

Powell said carb cycling can work for anyone in any stage of weight loss.

Whether its the yo-yo dieter whos been on and off diets for years and is just so frustrated because they just cant stick to it, I give those people the easy cycle -- if they want it, they can always have it tomorrow. They can reward themselves every other day, he said. Or theres the type A personality who says Look I just want to lose weight faster they can do a turbo cycle. Or theres a fit cycle for the avid athlete where they want to lose a little bit of weight but they dont want it to hurt their performance.

Interval Training Regimen

This is an example of how you can get a good workout in to achieve awesome results in a short amount of time per workout.

Interval Workout
Interval training is all about challenge and recovery -- over and over -- for a cardio blast.
You can do intervals many different ways -- running, on any sort of cardio equipment, or in a pool.
This particular workout -- which comes from Michael Banks, certified personal trainer and owner of Body by Banks Corporation in Salt Lake City -- uses a treadmill. If you're already fit, you can add dumbbells for an extra challenge.
1. Warm Up: On the treadmill, with the incline set at a challenging angle, power walk at a speed of 3-3.5 for 7 minutes. Keep your elbows up above your heart. Stop, get off the treadmill, and stretch.
2. Sprint: Drop the incline to 0, increase the treadmill speed, and sprint hard for 30 seconds. Aim for 90% of your maximum heart rate. To recover, bring your speed down to 3.0 and walk for one minute.
3. Squats: Get off the treadmill and squat, with your bottom out to the rear and your legs slightly apart. Then jump from the squatting position into the air, landing in the same squat position as before. Do this for one set of 15 or 20, working your quadriceps. If youre already in good shape, hold dumbbells by your sides.
4. Overhead Presses: Do 15 or 20 overhead presses with the weights, pushing them straight up and directly over your shoulders.
5. Sprint: Get back on the treadmill and sprint for 30 seconds (no incline). The goal is to be at 80% of your maximum heart rate. To recover, decrease your speed to 3.0 and walk for one minute.
6. Tricep Extensions: Using dumbbells, do one set of 15 or 20 overhead tricep extensions. Your elbows should point toward the ceiling, with the weights behind your head. Lift the weights directly above your head and back down again.
7. Pushups. Do one set of 15 push-ups, with your elbows at a 90-degree angle from the body. Modification: Do the push-ups with your knees on the ground, but do 25 instead of 15.
8. Sprint: Back to the treadmill. Sprint for 1 minute, aiming for 70% of your maximum heart rate. To recover, jog for 90 seconds.
9. Jumping Jacks. Do one set of 15 or 20 jumping jacks. Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure (Charlotte NC). The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world, raises significant funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrates breast cancer survivorship and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease. Since its inception in 1983, the Komen Race for the Cure series has grown from one local Race with 800 participants to a global series of more than 120 Races with more than 1 million people expected to participate in 2012.

The Run for Attention (Fort Mill SC). Join us for our 3rd year as we raise funds for the CAH Charter School, a school aimed at providing personalized education for abused, abandoned and neglected children throughout the area. There will also be a 1 mile Fun Run, music and family fun. $100 merchandise certificates for top male and female finishers as well as gift cards and medals for top 3 in each age category. Trails for Tails 5K Trail Run and Dog Walk (Charlotte NC). The Trails for Tails event is a major fundraising event benefitting Road To Home Canine Refuge and Great Dane Friends of Ruff Love that will help with costs associated with the care of rescued dogs while actively identifying permanent, loving homes. The event will feature not only a 5K but a one-mile dog walk for dogs and their humans. PETA names Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard as sexiest vegetarians
