5 Essentials for Travel without Weight Gain

This spring's whirlwind of conference speaking travel reminded me how important it is to plan food options as carefully as planning my wardrobe. Airports and conference centers can be the worst places to find healthy food. Here are my 5 essentials for travel without bringing home extra pounds:

1. Look at the schedule for required breakfast, lunch or dinner meetings. You won't have a menu choice, so consider that the main meal.
2. Bring plenty of healthy snacks that travel well in your carry on bag like food bars, protein shake mix, roasted soy beans or almonds.
3. Google search the area around your hotel and conference center for local restaurants and scan the menu. Walk to the restaurant for added exercise.
4. On the way to the hotel (or after by taxi) go to a local grocery to stock up on water (cheaper than at the hotel), fruit, hummus and veggies (carrot sticks are pre-cut and easy to tote).
5 .Choose one day to indulge in one dessert or snack that is a calorie buster. Then stop there. Biggest Loser news: BodyMedia returns, Instagram trainer fun, new photos (Photos)

Back in the early days of The Biggest Loser, contestants wore Bodybugg armbands that tracked their fitness and calorie burn. Bob Harper, Dolvett Quince active on Instagram

Are you a fan of the phone photo app Instagram? Well, so are Biggest Loser trainers Dolvett Quince (DOLVETT) and Bob Harper (TRAINERBOB). If you follow them, youll catch a glimpse of their friends, family, workouts, meals, vacation pics and assorted silliness. Dolvett likes to post food photos and motivating sayings, while Bob, who favors black-and-white shots, posts lots of photos of his adorable dog, Karl, and his favorite people. No sign of Jillian Michaels or host Alison Sweeney on Instagram, although there are some pretenders on there.

NBC releases new Biggest Loser trainer, host photos

And speaking of photos, on Tuesday afternoon, NBC released new publicity photos of Bob, Dolvett, Jillian and Alison, in preparation for the Biggest Loser season premiere. There are the usual solo shots but there are also some great action shots of the trainers lifting weights, doing sit-ups and other feats of strength and agility.

Risks from Extreme Heat Are Widely Underestimated

Americas worst heat wave to date happened long before anyone ever thought of global warming. In July of 1936 almost 1,000 Americans perished from heat exposure. That number pales by comparison to what happened in Europe in August 2003 when more than 40,000 people died (some estimates are as high as 70,000), mainly in France where the hottest temperatures since the 16th century were recorded.

Then deadly heat episodes began to occur with greater frequency. In July 2006 over 220 people died in the United States and Canada when temperatures rose up to 130 F (54 C). In June 2010 Russia experienced its hottest summer in over a millennium thousands succumbed.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 7,000 Americans have died from extreme heat exposure just over the last decade, with numbers accelerating since 2006. The current wave that has taken hold of the western parts of the U.S. shows all the signs that these trends will continue.

Heat-related deaths and illness are preventable with access to the right resources. One of the reasons why the Europeans experienced such a dramatic impact was that fewer households were equipped with air-conditioning. But children, the elderly, people with chronic medical conditions, low-income families, outdoor workers and athletes are at a higher risk here as well, according to the CDC.

There can be several factors at play when heat stress or a heat stroke occur. When in addition to hot temperatures air humidity is high, sweat on the skin cannot evaporate as quickly as it would in dry heat, making it harder for the body to cool off. Other contributing components can be age, obesity, heart disease, poor blood circulation, dehydration, alcohol and some medications.

Heat stroke symptoms can include elevated body temperature (104 F / 40 C or higher), lack of sweating, nausea, vomiting, flushed skin, difficulty breathing, rapid heart rate, muscle cramps, headache and confusion.

If you or a person near you experience heat stress or the possibility of a heat stroke, call your emergency service. In the meantime, move yourself or the one youre helping to a shady or air-conditioned place and, if necessary, remove excess clothing. If available, use ice or cold water to lower the body temperature. Misting cold water on the skin may be better than immersing in a pool or bathtub, both for safety reasons and also to mimic the natural cooling process more closely. Rehydrate as quickly as possible.

The best protection against heat stress, of course, is prevention. In hot weather, always wear light clothing, stay in cool places as much as you can and drink lots of water. Dont engage in strenuous activities or work outdoors. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, which have diuretic effects. Take cool showers or baths. Never leave children, seniors, or pets for that matter, in a vehicle without opening the windows. When you travel, check the weather forecast for your destination and prepare accordingly.

Dr. Oz: Learn how much protein your body really needs for weight loss

Her Mains chapter kicks off with an enticing-looking photo of Cheese and Eggplant Oven Bake, which is a little like a noodle-free lasagna. Leek and Pea Risotto, Shepherds Pie, and Cauliflower Cheese also look promising.

Theres a chapter devoted to Basics and Sides, which will teach you how to make her favorite stocks, sauces, croutons and pastry crusts.

While the chapter on Desserts and Baking isnt necessarily diet-friendly, there are some that could make the caloric cut with a few tweaks, such as Maple Syrup Baked Peaches and Apricots, and Coconut Rice Pudding With Chocolate Sauce.

The book is more suited to lacto-ovo vegetarians, since dairy products and eggs are used throughout the book, which would also make it a good choice for people who simply want to add in more meatless meals throughout the week.

'Blood Sugar Solution Cookbook' balances blood sugar in the kitchen

It has been a year since Mark Hyman, MD, released his book "The Blood Sugar Solution" and introduced ways to battle obesity and diabetes by rebalancing insulin and blood sugar levels through seven steps:

The first plan is for people with mild "diabesity," a term he defines as moving from balanced blood sugar toward insulin resistance and full-blown type 2 diabetes. The advanced plan is a little more restrictive and geared toward people who don't achieve the results they want on the basic plan.

There's also a reintroduction chapter of recipes for people who have reset their metabolisms and are ready to reintroduce foods containing gluten and dairy back into their diets.

Each section includes recipes for breakfasts, soups, salads, entrees, snacks and sides. Recipes include Garlic and Herb Hummus, Chile Verde Chicken, Strawberry Spinach Salad, Lemony Greek Pan-Roasted Chickpeas, and Spaghetti Squash Pad Thai -- a traditionally carb and calorie-heavy dish that benefits from Dr. Hyman's makeover.

There's also a section of full-page color photos that highlight dishes such as Mexican Lasagna, Blue Cheese Cowboy Burgers, and Double Peanut Butter Chocolate Cups. (Yes, you read that right.)

Ingredients

  • 1 box moist-style devils food cake mix (15.25 to 18.25 ounces)
  • 1 cup canned pure pumpkin
  • 1 cup mashed ripe banana
  • 14 cup creamy reduced-fat peanut butter
  • 1 tablespoon light vanilla soy milk

Directions: Youll Need: 9-inch by 13-inch baking pan, nonstick spray, large bowl, small bowl. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Spray a 9-inch by 13-inch baking pan with nonstick spray.

In a large bowl, combine cake mix, pumpkin, and banana. Mix until smooth and uniform. Spread batter into the baking pan, and smooth out the top. Ingredients for Blackberry and Mint Cooler

  • 2 fresh mint leaves
  • 3 to 4 blackberries
  • 1 tbsp agave syrup (Tip: Agave syrup is beneficial as a sugar replacement because it's sweeter, enabling you to use less. Try an organic version, such as Madhava Organic Agave Nectar - click to order now)
  • 1/2 lemon, juiced
  • 2 oz gin

Directions: In a silver shaker, add mint leaves, toss in blueberries and remaining ingredients. Shake ingredients together, pour into glass and garnish with mint. Enjoy!

Ingredients for Fresh Tomato Margarita

  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • Handful of cilantro
  • 1/2 lime, juiced
  • 1 1/2 oz tequila
  • 1 1/2 oz orange curacao
  • 1 tsp agave syrup
  • Fresh basil to garnish

Directions: In a clear pint glass, tap the cilantro a few times with a muddler. Add the tomato and muddle well. Add the remaining ingredients into silver shaker. Shake ingredients together. Pour back into glass and enjoy!

Beware of packaging when seeking out healthy snacks

Researchers at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces looked into the tinier packaging that snacks now come in, trying to measure how much consumers expect to consume from tinier packages of food. They also looked into the perception of how healthy people thought a 99-calorie package was compared to a 100-calorie item, in terms of degrees of healthy and how much they were eating.

You have seen the onesthe 99- and 100-calorie packs, some with claims of being healthier, too. Just like items being priced at $1.99 (or anything with .99 in the price), this writer is always amazed at how little it takes to fool the general public. The results of the studies conducted by Collin Payne and his co-authors on the study bear out the broad ignorance that manufacturers count on to enrich their pockets--and it works. Even the less healthy snacks with 99 calories were chosen over the healthy 100-calorie snacks. Amazinga one calorie difference and consumers concluded the item was healthier. One of the main conclusions the researchers found was that People are willing to pay more for smaller portions of food because they expect to consume less, but when it comes to healthier smaller snack packs labeled as 99 calories, consumers expect to actually consume more.

The bottom line here for weight watchers is that you are fooling yourself if you think that you can get away with consuming more of an item--you are falling for the smaller pack/99-calorie labeling, even when the food is healthier. A calorie is a calorie, and it doesnt matter whether it comes in a tiny package, a large one, a small glass or a large glass. Paying real attention to the nutritional data is key for anyone wishing to lose weight. Period.
