Biggest Loser season 14 week 5 recap: You can eat healthfully on a budget (Photos)

Tonights Biggest Loser showed the contestants that eating healthy on a budget can definitely be done, and one contestant had her best weigh-in ever. But it was the red team who headed to the elimination room to bring their tally down to three.

Tired and hungry after their workouts, the contestants headed to the Biggest Loser kitchens to rustle up some grub. Problem was, the cupboards were bare and so were the fridges. But there was a note from Alison telling them to meet her at the grocery store.

Quote of the week, from Michael: You got 10 overweight people you dont mess with our food.

At the store, Alison told them that theyd get $10 a day to spend on food every day, or $70 a week per person. It was eye-opening to see how many of the contestants dont regularly grocery shop. Instead, they depend on fast food and takeout for a lot of their food. But they did great everyone came in right on budget.

Follow-up makeover time! TC and Nikki look great. These makeover segments for eliminated contestants will be a regular thing starting this week.

Bob had a heart-to-heart with Alex, who has been working out with him as well as Jillian. Shes down on herself because her weight loss hasnt been as big as other contestants but Jillian told her to keep perspective because anywhere else losing 18 pounds in four weeks would be spectacular.

The update with the teens was great Lindsay is training for cheerleading, Sunny is doing lots of outdoor activities with friends and Biingo, despite his broken foot, is playing baseball.

Chef Devin Alexander, author of all the Biggest Loser cookbooks, stopped by the ranch to make a Southwest Loaded Sweet Potato that featured ground turkey, two kinds of salsas and a dollop of Greek yogurt.

The challenge: Each team has a fountain in the middle of a pond. The goal is to be the first to put all their 5-pound coins in their fountain. The winning team gets 10 yearlong health club memberships to give away. They also can choose a 2-pound weigh-in advantage or they can choose to call home. White team Danni powered through that challenge and since shes the only person on her team, she gladly took that 2-pound advantage.

David and Bob met with Dr. Huizenga about David's knee. Turns out there are tiny stress fractures in the spongy bone part of his knee. Also turns out that David injured the same knee on the treadmill a few years ago but didn't tell anyone because he didn't want to seem weak. That insight uncovered other issues with David and how he tends to stuff down his feelings.

Weigh-in: Bobs team hasnt lost any weigh-ins, so he feels like theres a target on their backs. Danni has a 2-pound advantage, but if she loses the weigh-in, shes automatically out. Howd they do?

'Extreme Weight Loss' Chris Powell helps 410 lb Ryan lose 217 lbs, regain health (Photos)

What does it mean to have your life transformed physically, emotionally and spiritually? Just ask Ryan Sawlsville, whose journey played out on June 25's edition of "Extreme Weight Loss" on ABC. After surviving a horrific traffic accident several years ago, Ryan lost his left arm. He turned to food for comfort, overeating his way to 410 pounds at age 23. Here are the keys to Ryan's one-year complete transformation:

  • Ryan's attitude was critical, and he recognized that his obesity played a role in his limitations. "Im doing things now at my current weight that I couldn't do with two arms," Ryan told the Post-Crescent Media on June 25, noting that he viewed his weight as more of a disability than his lost limb.
  • Chris emphasized the importance of diet and nutrition, focusing on healthy, unprocessed food rather than protein shakes, which Ryan initially wanted to use to take off the pounds.   • Ryan learned that nothing is impossible.He worked out with a Packers linebacker, took part in a 5K run and even completed a long bike ride with retired Packers receiver Donald Driver. "Im living proof the impossible is possible," Ryan now says proudly. "Theres nothing I cant do." And Chris Powell agrees, as he watches Ryan weigh in at 193 pounds at the end of his one-year transformation.

Choosing Optimal Health

Today I was giving a speech entitled It Pays to Be Healthy to a group of professionals and entrepreneurs. A fat loss overview can help you produce a clear summarize of what you need to focus on to accomplish your fat loss objective if you're a novice; or serve as a reminder for these who are at an advanced or more improve step of their weight-loss strategy. The point of my talk was to make our health a priority. As entrepreneurs, our health and our bodies are important assets. I endorsed the concept of investing in our health and our bodies to preserve and protect them the way we would with anything that is precious to us.

I acknowledged that there are some genetic predispositions that may make achieving optimal health more challenging. Nevertheless, what we can take responsibility for, we should do so. Given that there are some things that we cannot control, we should focus on the ones that we can.

A woman in the audience came up to me and told me an amazing story. She is an active, busy professional. She has been "into health" her entire adult life. She is trim, active, energetic, and she relishes all of the rewards she reaps for having chosen to make her health a priority.

As an adopted person, she always knew that without any knowledge of her family health history, living in her body as healthfully and responsibly as possible was the smartest path.

Well into her adult years, she met for the first time her birth mother and her sister. They are both morbidly overweight and have diabetes. She shared with me her own discovery of how much at risk she could have potentially been in had she grown up in that family with their values.

Many people buy into their family health history as if it was a done deal. This has certainly been my experience as a health coach. People often say that their mother, their aunt, their grandmother and other family members have had XYZ disease (cardiovascular, cancer, diabetes for example) so they figured that they would too.

I have often believed that what people inherit in addition to the genetic factor, are habits and beliefs. This woman today showed me a glorious illustration what can happen when we choose health, in spite of our family history.

No weigh, dude!: Why obsessing over the scale doesn't make sense

Often when were trying to get lean or lose weight, we depend too much on scale readings.

A regular bathroom scale is an imprecise measure of body composition and fat loss. Five pounds on a scale is five pounds, whether its fat or muscle. The scale, however, can't discern the quality the weight that is, whether its muscle or fat.

Muscle is denser (compact) than fat and, therefore, takes up less space. A fat burning overview can help you build a clear outline of what you need to focus on to carry out your fat reducing purpose if you're a starter; or serve as a reminder for those who are at an advanced or more advance phase of their weight loss strategy. Following are seven steps that can serve as instructions for your own weight loss system. The first thing that one must understand is that losing weight and losing fat is not a similar thing. Many weight loss plans have misled people into considering that it is the same, but most diets and weight loss applications only work by causing a person's body to lose more muscle tissue and water than actual body fat, more help please visit The Fat Loss Factor. That means a person who appears lean and muscular can weigh the same amount as someone of the same height who is overweight. The photo for this article illustrates why we shouldn't get fixated on scale weight. Similarly, body mass index measures shouldnt cause us to freak out.

Body mass index is a reflection of an individuals body mass divided by the square of his or her height. Originally, BMI was a way for health and medical professionals to have a general discussion about healthy body weight. Its never been about absolutes. Like a bathroom scale, BMI doesnt measure the ratio of muscle to fat. It simply measures weight. As a result, bodybuilders or fit individuals with dense muscle mass frequently have misleading BMI numbers, which place them in overweight or obese categories.

A BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is considered normal weight; 25-29.9 is considered overweight, and more than 30, obese. A BMI of 40 or above indicates a person is morbidly obese. (Calculate your BMI here.)

The American Council on Exercise considers hydrostatic (in water) weighing as good way to accurately assess body composition. Other measures include skinfold and body circumference measures, as well as bioelectrical, which sends small electric impulses through the body.

The bottom line is this: When youre eating right and exercising, you know it and your body responds through increased muscle mass and body fat loss, even when it does not immediately register on a scale. Your appearance in the mirror, as well as better clothing fit, may be a better indication that the scale is tipping in your favor.

Burning calories is the main goal in this workout. What we tend to forget is that each and every activity that we do expends some energy and burns calories.

Get warmed up with a brisk 30 minute walk. Set a goal for which tasks youd like to complete in 60 minutes. An average homemaker can complete a floor of tidying, vacuuming, dusting, and mopping in this amount of time.

To make it a workout, tweak each of these activities a bit to get your heart pumping. Do all of these activities with a sense of urgency, as if a drill sergeant is coming to do a white glove inspection this afternoon.

To ramp up laundry, use your detergent bottle to do two sets of 10 bicep curls as youre getting things moving. If your detergent is not heavy enough, drop in front of your washing machine and do 20 push-ups before you start the rest of the cleaning. Do another set of 20 when you return to move the load to the dryer.

While tidying up after your family use each time you pick something up as a chance to flex your glutes and be sure to keep your abs tight. As youve gathered belongings, run them to their owners room.

If you run while you tidy, you should be able to complete the tidying in 15 minutes or less. You will also start to feel a bit hotter as you get yourself moving faster. If your home is not big enough to run, bunny hop from room to room.

Vacuuming floors can be a great time to work on your legs. Each time you stretch out to push the vacuum, assume a plie squat position. Vacuum vigorously because the more intense you are about meeting your 60 minute goal, the more calories you burn. If getting those floors sparkly is a priority, use the time to firm your abs. Get into a plank position to clean under and around your furniture. Hold the plank for 30 seconds, then scrub and repeat.

Continue to think of other ways to include exercise into your cleaning routine. These exercises in conjunction with a healthy diet will trim you down, all while making your home sparkling clean. The efficiency will leave you with extra time to spend with those you love.
