'Biggest Loser' trainer Dolvett Quince shares weight loss tips

Happy World Run Day!

If you havent logged your miles yet today on the trails, track or treadmill, there are still a few more hours to get out and celebrate World Run Day, an annual running event that celebrates running and charitable giving.

The event was created in 1999 by Long Island runner Bill McDermott, who dedicated it to his brother killed in an automobile accident on Nov. 8, 1983. Since then, World Run Day takes place on the Sunday closest to November 8 to commemorate the date, and has counted more than 10,000 runners as participants over the years.

World Run Days mission is to broaden and promote the health benefits of running while also encouraging runners to donate to their favorite charity with the objective of promoting a healthy future for both young and old. Its the only event of its kind celebrated simultaneously around the globe with group events, both large and small, in cities such as San Francisco, London, Sydney and even Afghanistan.

Each year, World Run Day event organizers and participants hope to further the sport by helping to:

  • Promote running Partner organizations highlight the health benefits of running for all citizens young and old, with recent emphasis being placed on running as a solution to end childhood obesity.
  • Encourage charitable giving The event serves as a rallying cry throughout the running community to help others who are the victims of natural disasters, disease, or any other cause deemed worthy by participants.
  • Mobilize the running community World Run Day reaches out to partners in the running community that hope to elevate the sport of running while promoting its benefits and providing locations for people to run locally.
  • Offer event director tools Free resources are available to local event directors to use free of charge to produce a World Run Day event in their location.
  • Inspire future running leaders A campus outreach program is intended to inspire members of a younger generation to lift the torch for youth runners around the globe. Getting runners within colleges and universities to participate is a goal that can combine the efforts of community service with local charity.

We talk with Chris Powell about season 3 of Extreme Weight Loss

Tonight is the season 3 premiere of Extreme Weight Loss on ABC. But wait what happened to the name? Wasnt it Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition?

Were putting the title of the show on a diet, Powell said with a laugh when we talked with him on the phone about the show.

We asked strength and conditioning specialist Powell, author of the new book "Choose More, Lose More for Life" (Hyperion, $24.99) to talk about the third season and what viewers can look forward to.

I cant even compare it to the first two seasons because everybodys journeys were just so unique, he said. Tonight's season three premiere features the twins, David and Rebecca, who reveal a difficult upbringing that led them to gain a lot of extra weight over the years. But a couple of the people in upcoming episodes faced physical challenges beyond excess weight.

One gentleman blew out both of his knees and so when it came to exercise we had to be so flexible in his approach, find every way around it, it was almost all upper body, Powell said. I also ended up taking on a kid in Green Bay, Wisconsin, who lost his arm in a car accident a couple years ago.

Powell says the overarching theme of the series is no excuses.

If you want it bad enough, you can get it. And Ive gotta tell you, its just been a remarkable year, and just beautiful people who have gone through this process, Powell said.

But he adds that it hasnt been all hugs and high-fives as he called it.

Going through the ups and the downs with them this past year has been truly an honor, he said. Im just excited for the general public to see these transformations not just the physical transformation, not just the physical weight loss, which is incredible. Really its the transformation from the inside out for all of these people.

They all came from this place of such darkness and despair, he said. Im just so thrilled for everybody to see at the end of this year how much they love themselves.

How often do you need to eat

Some simple math can help us here. When looking to optimize anabolism and satiety, the number meals you eat throughout the day should be a divisor of the total amount of calories you eat.

If you eat 3,000 calories per day, then breaking that into 6 500 calorie meals would probably give you sufficient food to feel satisfied, while not demanding so much that you need to turn to lower quality foods in order to hit your per-meal calorie targets. On the other hand, if you eat only 2,000 calories per day, eating five 400-calories meals is not a satiating option, but eating four 500-calorie meals would be more filling.

In his follow up to The Skinny Rules, celebrity trainer Bob Harper brings you his latest book Jumpstart to Skinny.
