Join Dr. Loves HOW Study to help fight breast cancer

Most women know someone who has breast cancer now or who has dealt with it in the past. It is a disease that goes right to the core of being a woman. Weighing in on obesity, Coca-Cola launches 'Coming Together' ad

Amid growing concern about obesity and the role of sugary drinks in exacerbating a major U.S. health issue, Coca-Cola weighed in Monday through an ad campaign scheduled to begin airing on major cable networks.

The two-minute spot, titled Coming Together, highlights the Atlanta-based companys efforts to lower the caloric content of its drinks by providing consumers with 180 low- and no-calorie options, ranging from Dasani water to Coke Zero. It also discusses the role that individuals and all Americans play in the obesity problem, such as increasing exercise or lowering our overall caloric intake not just soft drinks.

The ad began airing during the highest-rated shows on CNN, Fox News and MSNBC, the Associated Press reported Monday.

The Coca-Cola response comes as New York City prepares to enact a ban in March on the sale of sugary drinks larger than 16 ounces at restaurants, sports arenas and movie theaters the first such move in the nation. As a fitness trainer, I blogged last September that I believe the New York City effort is a step in the right direction toward better nutrition, even as others criticized the ban as overreaching government.

According to U.S. health research, almost two in three adults are overweight or obese, and some health experts predict that half of U.S. adults will be obese by 2030.

Excess sugar in sodas and many sugary drinks and snack foods provide empty calories. A 16-ounce bottle of soda can pack 55 grams of sugar or about 22 sugar cubes; a can of soda, around 16 sugar cubes. So in this context, all calories are not necessarily created equal.

Empty calories provide few healthy carbohydrates, proteins or fats required in a balanced diet. When not burned as energy, excessive calories are stored as fat. Could you be sabotaging your weight loss success?

Youve tried numerous times to lose weight. You start a new, healthy lifestyle and everything is going great, then bam! You make a stupid move that sends you further from your weight loss goal instead of closer to it. Is it an unintentional slip-up or could you be sabotaging your own weight loss success?

If you want to lose weight more than anything, its tough to imagine that you would stop yourself from reaching your goal, but it happens. Maybe not consciously, but it happens none-the-less. What you have to ask yourself is what purpose overeating is serving you.

Human beings, by nature, do things that benefit them. For instance, if youre given the option to work overtime, you make the decision to either accept or decline based on what needs you want to meet. A fat loss overview can help you construct a clear describe of what you need to focus on to achieve your fat reducing target if you're a rookie; or serve as a reminder for these who are at an intermediate or more improve phase of their weight loss program. If you cant hide behind a bag of chips or your excess weight, that means you have to tackle your issues head on. This creates a lot of anxiety and stress, which are two of the biggest emotions that drive people to eat in the first place!

How do you figure out if you are sabotaging your own weight loss efforts?

Next time you are about to eat when you arent physically hungry, stop yourself before reaching into the cookie jar and ask yourself what youre feeling right then. What emotion or situation led you to the chocolate stash or unopened bag of greasy chips? What benefit would you receive by eating right at that exact moment?

Once youve identified the result that you are seeking by eating, ask yourself if there is any way to get it other than eating. For instance, if youre craving a cheeseburger because you were just asked to attend a social event that makes you anxious, can you just decline attending? Or, if youre opening the licorice bag because you crave attention from your spouse but arent getting it, would you be willing to open the line of communication with them later that night and tell them that youd like more time alone together?

Remember that eating can satisfy nothing other than physical hunger, just as being tired can only be satisfied by sleep and thirst can only be quenched by drinking. If youre eating due to emotional reasons, you will never be satisfied. You cant be. Its impossible.

But, if youre willing to quit using food as a solution to a problem it cant fix, then youre ready to finally kick your self-sabotaging behaviors. The result is lost weight and gained self-respect and confidence. Hows that for a trade-off?

Soup makes you feel fuller by raising blood sugar quickly (Video)

Soup has long been the friend of those who are trying to lose weight. Much research has confirmed that people who begin a meal with soup, consequently eat less calories at that meal than those who don't eat soup and that they feel fuller afterwards. New research published in the January 2013 issue of the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition has found out why. Researchers from the Functional Food Centre, Oxford Brookes University, Headington, Oxford, UK in conjunction with the Brenner Centre for Molecular Medicine in Singapore and the Physiology Department of the School of Medicine at the National University of Ireland in Galway studied 12 volunteers and their responses on three different occasions to three different types of meals - a typical solid meal, a chunky soup and a smooth soup.

The partipants then recorded how full they felt and had their blood sugar and the time it took their stomach to empty from the meal measured, using standard tests.

The smooth soup took the longest to leave the stomach, followed by the chunky soup with the solid meal taking the longest. The smooth soup had the greatest effect on blood sugar levels, raising blood sugar by an average of 87 mmol/l/minute, followed by the chunky soup at 65.4 mmol/l/minute and the solid meal coming in at 61.6 mmol/l/minute.

The study participants, in line with the findings of previous studies, reported feeling most full after the smooth soup than the other two meals.

The researchers concluded that the smooth soup induced greater fullness compared with the solid meal because of a combination of delayed gastric emptying leading to feelings of gastric distension and rapid accessibility of nutrients causing a greater glycaemic response.

This is something that people who are following a low carbohydrate diet should take into consideration when choosing the ingredients for their soups. Many people choose a low-carbohydrate lifestyle in order to minimise disruption to insulin and blood sugar levels. Eating smooth soups which have even a moderate amount of carbohydrate in them may be detrimental to blood sugar and insulin control, particularly if the soups contain ingredients like pumpkin, sweet potato or potato.

Part of the reason why soups help people to feel fuller after a meal is that they sit in the stomach for longer, making the stomach feel distended which triggers feelings of fullness and hormones associated with satiety. Another reason that they trigger a feeling of fullness is that the nutrients contained in the soup require very little digestion and are almost immediately available in the bloodstream. In some instances this is a good thing, and soups are definitely something that can easily play a significant part in a healthy, low-carbohydrate diet, just be careful to consider the glycaemic response when choosing ingredients.
