Experience gluten-free glory with Dr. Oz's Greek yogurt cheesecake recipe

Following a gluten-free diet and longing for dessert? Many gluten-free products contain sugar, rice flour and butter, making them high in calories and low in nutrition. Dr. Mehmet Oz wants you to enjoy dessert without guilt. His flavorful solution: Greek yogurt cheesecake! One taste and you'll agree with Kim Kardashian, who recently tweeted, "Gluten-free is the way to be."

Ingredients

  • 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
  • 2/3 cup reduced-fat cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1/2 tsp fresh orange zest

Directions: Pour one and a half cups of the chocolate chips into a glass bowl and melt in the microwave for two minutes, stopping to stir every 30 seconds, until the chocolate is smooth and completely melted. Stir in the last half cup of the chocolate chips and mix together until all the chocolate is smooth and glossy. Drop a spoonful of the melted chocolate into eight cupcake liners. Use a spoon to spread the chocolate into an even layer and bring the chocolate up the sides of the liners to help keep the filling in the cup. Put the chocolate cups in the fridge while you mix the filling. In a medium bowl, beat the cream cheese with a 1/4 cup of the powdered sugar. Taste. If you want it a little sweeter, add some more powdered sugar and mix until there are no more lumps.

More than just fat and cholesterol: How red meat harms heart health

Leading the list of tips for starting a heart healthy diet is usually the advice to limit red meat. Most experts cite saturated fat and cholesterol as being the primary reason for avoiding burgers and steaks, but researchers have found another reason why you may want to shun meat.

Researchers with the Cleveland Clinic have found that L-carnitine, a molecule found in red meat may be responsible for arterial clogging. L-carnitine is converted within the gut to trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), a chemical associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease.

A team led by Stanley Hazen MD PhD and Robert Koeth tested the carnitine and TMAO levels in more than 2,595 patients. Those who ate the most meat or other foods containing carnitine had the highest levels of TMAO due to a greater amount of gut bacteria that metabolized the nutrient. The research team also studied mice that were given L-carnitine and found that they produced more TMAO and had twice the level of atherosclerosis as those whose carnitine sources were limited. In addition to meat, carnitine can also be found in energy drinks and body building supplements where it claims to improve endurance and increase fat metabolism.

Stanley Hazen, a cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic says that TMAO changes our cholesterol metabolism and contributes to the accumulation of cholesterol within the artery wall. He says that there is a significant association between carnitine intake and risk for heart attack, stroke, and death.

"Carnitine is not an essential nutrient; our body naturally produces all we need," adds Dr. Hazen. "We need to examine the safety of chronically consuming carnitine supplements as we've shown that, under some conditions, it can foster the growth of bacteria that produce TMAO and potentially clog arteries."

A TMAO blood test for patient use is slated to hit the market later in the year, Dr. Hazen says. It will show whos at increased risk independent of existing risk factors, and it may also help to personalize your diet, he says.

  • Go for the 30/30 rule. Consume 30 grams of protein, such as a protein shake, within the first 30 minutes of waking up. Tim says this guideline revs up your metabolism and prevents you from overeating later in the day. In addition, a protein-rich diet keeps you full longer and maximizes weight loss, according to studies. Tim recommends protein powder consisting of whey protein isolate.
  • Boost your energy by drinking a small glass of grapefruit juice before you gulp down your morning coffee. This citrus wake-up call extends coffee's energizing boost.
  • Do you experience a mid-morning slump? Tim suggests a fermented soybean paste called natto. By taking two to three tablespoons daily or consuming a 100 mg supplement three times a day, you can aid digestion and reduce your risk for blood clots and Alzheimer's.
  • Portion control is key to losing weight. Tim's tip: Paper cups! "Cut a paper coffee cup in half and use it as a cylinder to measure and present food," says Tim. "For instance, place chicken salad or cooked rice in the cylinder, press down slightly and then unmold. By stacking your food this way, youll shave off calories and enjoy a nice presentation."
  • Enjoy avocados for healthy fat, says Tim. However, he advises avoiding artificial sweeteners. Instead, sweeten drinks and foods with a dash of cinnamon or vanilla.

My inspiring mom by Lance Becvar

The writer was trying to figure out an appropriate gift for his mom. You see the writers mom lives in another state and its hard to get gifts to her, she stated that she does not want flowers, candy. Sadly, because of economic and time constraints, he has not seen her physically in almost 3 years. So the writer decided that he wanted to tell the readers what his mom means to him. 'Hungry Girl' Lisa Lillien trains Anderson Cooper to make guilt-free onion rings

Paleo Diet is so easy a caveman can do it

The Paleo Diet also known as the caveman diet is a nutritional plan based on the Paleolithic era, popularized in the mid-1970s by gastroenterologist Walter L. Voegtlin.

The diet consists mainly of fish, grass-pasture raised meats, eggs, vegetables, fruits, fungi, roots and nuts. The diet excludes grains, legumes, dairy products, refined salt, refined sugar, and processed oil. Basically eating like our ancestors did 10,000 years ago.

The diet claims by eliminating certain foods a person can reduce their chances of Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, gout, acne and other chronic conditions.

A basic Paleo plan would consist of 3-4 meals a day including:
1. 4-8 ounces of lean protein such as chicken, lean beef, turkey, pork loin of seafood
2. Several servings of multicolored vegetables
3. And good fats from avocado, olive oil or unsalted nuts such as almonds, pecans, macadamia nuts or walnuts

Overall, avoiding salt, processed foods and eating more whole foods including fruits and vegetables is a very useful message to dieters. And with all of its restrictions, it is very likely the dieter will lose weight and may have many health benefits, but the dieter must also be aware of the low fiber and calcium intake which may cause adverse effects as well.

The five sound principles include:
1. Avoiding processed foods
2. Load up on fruits and vegetables
3. I moved to Colorado Springs, CO over two years ago, after having lived in Southern California all my life, so moving from Lakewood, CA at 46 ft above sea level to 6,010 ft was an adjustment. We had been here for six weeks when I got the most intense migraine I'd ever had. Nothing seemed to get rid of it. Even Excedrin, my go-to for migraines, didn't take care of it, so I knew something was really wrong. I asked my husband to take my to Urgent Care. After drinking the prescribed amount of water (substituting one Gatorade to add variety) for several days, I felt so much better. The headaches were gone, and they stayed gone as long as I drank all that water. I felt like I was sloshing around all the time, and I became an expert at knowing where the restrooms were in every business!

Here are some tips to avoid altitude sickness or even the milder form, acute mountain sickness, when you move to or visit a higher elevation:

Three days before your trip, start drinking more water. The daily minimum amount of water for anyone is eight 8-oz glasses a day. Add three more to that.

Avoid alcohol. Alcohol is dehydrating, and will make your symptoms worse. If you're going to drink alcohol at the ski resort, drink one glass of water for every drink you have.

At your destination, keep drinking water, and avoid strenuous activity the first day.

If possible, gradually ascend to your destination. Spend a day or two somewhere between the lower elevation and the higher one, to give your body time to adjust.

Keep drinking water as you play or exercise.

Before we moved, we hadn't thought about water and dehydration, and how dry it was here compared to Southern California. I had a small taste of altitude sickness when we moved here, and looking back, I'd also had altitude sickness when we went skiing in Big Bear, CA, but didn't realize what it was.

I have been able to cut back on the water to about 8-10 glasses of water a day, but if I go below that for several days, I end up with another headache. Keeping hydrated at this elevation is essential, especially if you are doing any kind of activity.

NBC reveals highlights from new season of 'The Biggest Loser'

Calling it "Challenge America," NBC has unveiled the highlights of "The Biggest Loser" season 14, which kicks off with a two-night premiere on Jan. 6 and 7, reported Reality TV magazine on Nov. 16. In addition to the return of fabulously fit Jillian Michaels, the new season will add teens to the group of contestants.

Trainers Bob Harper, Dolvett Quince and Jillian will be paired with separate teams, and each team will include at least one young person. Although they will compete and be involved, the young people, who range in age from 13 to 17, are not eligible for elimination.
