David Hasselhoff: No red meat diet keeps him in great shape at 60

Milk doesnt always do a body good

Got Milk? is an advertising campaign encouraging the consumption of cows milk, but the current United States Department of Agricultures recommendation of three servings per day may not be ideal for everyone.

Drinking reduced fat or nonfat milk is recommended for Americans as a way of avoiding saturated fats and cholesterol which can have health implications. Diets high in saturated fat raise bad cholesterol levels in the blood which in turn increases the risk for coronary heart disease. But when fat is reduced in milk products, it is often replaced with sweeteners to make it taste better but in turn adds sugar and calories.

The worst possible situation is reduced-fat chocolate milk: you take out the fat, its less tasty, says David Ludwig, director of the New Balance Foundation on Obesity Prevention Center at Boston Childrens Hospital. So to get kids to drink 3 cups a day, you get this sugar-sweetened beverage.

Ludwig states that people with high quality diets and getting adequate protein, vitamin D and calcium from foods such as leafy green vegetables, legumes and nuts and seeds will probably see no added benefit from consuming three servings of dairy per day.

On a gram for gram basis, cooked kale has more calcium than milk. Sardines, nuts, seeds, beans, green leafy vegetables are all sources of calcium, says Ludwig. Essentially we can get plenty of calcium from consuming whole range foods.

The problem, according to Greg Miller, executive vice president for the National Dairy Council, is that we are great at judging a quality diet. Another option is to switch to non-dairy alternatives such as soy or almond milk, but these are often a poor source of protein. Cows milk is known as a triple-duty food because it provides protein, vitamin D and calcium, which are nutrients the many Americans do not get enough of anywhere else.

Ann Romney dishes on Mitt's diet and her multiple sclerosis with Rachael Ray

Hoping to give her husband Mitt's campaign a boost, Ann Romney visited Rachael Ray to dish on topics ranging from meat loaf to multiple sclerosis, with which she struggles daily. Talking with Rachael on her Oct. 25 show, Ann discussed the role that diet plays in helping her keep her energy high during the hectic campaign schedule.

I know a lot of people know that I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis," Ann told Rachael. Noting that "anyone thats suffering from MS" recognizes that "it is a devastating illness," she described "the fatigue that goes with it" as "horrible." Ann also revealed her most humiliating moment: "Walking in on George Bush when he was having a massage." Oops. As for her husband's favorite food, Ann says he's easy to please. "Mitts favorite meat is hamburger, and his favorite way to eat hamburger is meatloaf," she laughed. "When we were first married my mother was a great cook, and my grandmother was a great cook, but I didnt really know how to cook when I first got married." She "tossed out all my junk food, especially anything with sugar." She now eats cereal for breakfast, salad for lunch and veggies and fish for dinner, according to the Daily Mail. "For the first time, it wasn't hard for me," Rosie told People. "It took a heart attack for me to learn to take care of myself."
