Biggest Loser season 14 week 8 recap: The cranky episode

Tonight, we learned of yet another Biggest Loser love connection (Jeff and Francelina!), and everyone reached the breaking point with emotional outbursts at every turn. It was a very cranky week on the ranch, but would the lovebird hatchlings stay together? (We'll be talking with one of them this week.)

Alison greeted the contestants in the gym with an immunity challenge for everyone. If they all lose 70 pounds as a group, no one is going home. If they dont meet that goal, a red line will pop up at the weigh-in, causing immediate elimination.

Pop challenge: The teen contestants will be taking the quiz for the adults. The more questions they get right, the lower that 70-pound goal will be lowered by as much as 5 pounds. They took off 4 pounds for the team. Another 5 pounds can come from bettering their scores on a fitness test that they all took at the start of the season. And all of them powered past their old scores, taking off another 5 pounds, making the new goal 61 pounds.

Gina was very cranky in the gym and Dolvett pushed her until she snapped and walked out.

Quote of the week, from Dolvett: If youre holding onto my treadmill, youre making me bad, so let it go.

Gina actually had a beef with Joe, who was cracking lawyer jokes. Gina and Dolvett worked things out and Gina returned to the gym, but then Jillian ticked her off and Gina left again. Jillian then turned her attention to Alex. Jillian told her to jog at 6 mph for 5 minutes but Alex kept stopping at the 1-minute mark, which made both of them angry.

This prompted a very entertaining trainer pow-wow with Jillian flying off the handle.

Alex and Jillian had a heart-to-heart. Im so sick of my best not being good enough, Alex tearfully said to Jillian. After they reached an understanding, Bob and Gina had a talk. Bob thought Gina was trying to sabotage her efforts by being too sensitive toward Joes comments and finding any excuse to create problems for herself. Gina promised Bob that she would work on beating her self-sabotage habit.

The challenge: Contestants had to dig through giant piles of sand together to find arrows that would lead them through a path of sand dunes that ended at the end of a pier. If they made their goal, theyd get to knock another 10 pounds off the 61-pound weigh-in goal. While sand seems like a nice, soft, friendly surface, it was pretty treacherous for this challenge. First Danni jammed a shovel into her ankle, then Gina strained a hamstring running toward the goal. But with 5 seconds left, they met the goal.

Then, the ultimate Subway product-placement moment: Jared himself showed up, bearing sammies and his giant fat pants. He let them know that the season 14 Biggest Loser winner would be starring in a Subway commercial with him.

Another challenge? Expecting a last-chance workout, the contestants instead found themselves on a seaside bluff. They were hoisted up on high wires and had to work together in teams to walk across those parallel lines. Its basically one of those corporate retreat trust-building exercises, but it was especially useful this week, given all the division among some of the contestants and trainers. Yes, Alex worked with Jillian, and Gina worked with Joe. And Francelina worked with Jeff (awwww, sweet!).

Weigh-in and elimination: Would the contestants team up and lose 51 pounds? If they dont, the person below the red line automatically goes home. Howd they do?

  • Danni: 7 (Welcome to One-derland!)
  • Joe: 6
  • Jackson: 5
  • Alex: 3
  • Jeff: 4

(At this point, it was clear that they wouldnt get to 51 pounds.)

  • Gina: 4
  • Francelina: 2

I will keep fighting for myself because Im worth it and I deserve to be happy, Francelina said as she was eliminated. There was only 1 pound separating her from Jeff.

The update: Francelina is down 77 pounds and well into One-derland. And she also officially confirmed that she and Jeff are a couple, and that shes planning on moving to Chicago to train with him for the finale.

  • Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower contain phytochemicals, which Dr. Ann calls "the most potent naturally occurring anti-breast cancer agents ever identified." She recommends eating them raw or lightly cooked.
  • Carotenoid-rich vegetables such as carrots, tomatoes and sweet potatoes offer "broad-spectrum, natural chemoprevention. Light cooking actually increases the bioavailability of carotenoids, so enjoy this group of veggies cooked for optimal results," suggests Dr. Ann.

Marissa Jaret Winokur: I lost 60 pounds with salads, sausages and sweat

2 snacks that won't break the calorie or carb banks--good for diabetics, too (Photos)

If you are trying to reduce or control your weight, or if you are a diabetic, then you know that counting carbs is a key to a healthful and safe eating plan. But for those of us who like snacks, or perhaps are eating several smaller meals a day, trying to find something that wont break the bank when it comes to calories and carbs can be difficult. This weight watcher has come across two items that might interest you.

While most people would prefer freshly made Mexican or Tex-Mex food, they do not always get it. So, the next best thing is Amys Enchilada (Cheese). It is always important to read the nutritional information, since what you are looking at may be two servings in the photo, and not one; hence, the reason for calling this enchilada a snack. The photo shows two, and the serving size is one. There are no preservatives, and the product is gluten free.

For a snack, the calories are on the high side (240), and so you might want to serve this with a salad if you are eating a regular meal. The nutrition facts include 18 grams carbs, 440 mg sodium (about a third of the daily allotment), 2 grams sugar, 9 grams protein, and 3 grams dietary fiber. And this enchilada actually tastes good and is not overly salty. You will find Amys products in the frozen food section of your supermarket.

Next, there is Trader Joes Reduced Guilt Pizza Primavera, with yellow squash, zucchini, eggplant and bell peppers. Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole wheat pastry flour
  • cup Sucanat (click for details)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 1 egg replacer (1 tablespoon ground flaxseed meal with 3 tablespoons water)
  • 1 cups fresh cranberries, finely chopped in food processor

Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Prevention

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and while its extremely important to get regular checkups; especially for women over forty, the best initiative is prevention. Fortunately, there are things you can do to reduce your risk of cancer.

Maintaining a healthy weight is one of the key elements in disease prevention. A weight loss of just 10 percent can drastically reduce the risk of cancer and many other diseases. When it comes to losing weight the best results are born from a regimen including both calorie reduction and regular exercise.

With that in mind, it makes sense that a healthy diet can lessen the incidence of cancer. Studies show that people who consumed a diet high in fiber, fruits and vegetables and lower in saturated fat and red meat had less occurrences of cancer than those who did not. A fat reducing overview can help you establish a clear summarize of what you require to focus on to achieve your fat loss target if you're a rookie; or serve as a reminder for the ones who are at an intermediate or more advance phase of their weightloss program. Although this month we become acutely aware of how much breast cancer affects our lives and the lives of our loved ones, we need to be mindful year round of the steps we can take to prevent cancer and other diseases by improving our health and opportunity for longevity.

Yummy Diet Recipes!

Producing meals, which are less than 300 calories that still hold an enjoyable flavor, is not an easy task.   • Lettuce
  • Tomatoes
  • Shreaded cheese (made with 2% milk)
  • Picante Sauce. (Always good for you)

Brown the ground beef in a skillet and drain all excess juices. Then the rest should be self-explanatory. You can also place al of the ingredients on the tortilla and then place it in the oven for a scrumptious Mexican pizza (minus the lettuce of course).

Eating healthy isn't that hard after all.
