Biggest Loser Recap - Age stereotypes and workout limitations

In this week's episode of The Biggest Loser, the debate on whether age matters when it comes to weight loss continues. After the premiere last week, contestants/teams were split according to age, and ironically, one of the oldest members went home. Did that change this week?

Biggest Loser: Alison Sweeney blogs about seeing the "walk-off week" quitters

Reflecting on the past Biggest Loser season, Alison Sweeney could sum up her emotions as "it was the best of times...it was the worst of times," according to her May 3 People magazine blog. "It seems like only yesterday that I was welcoming the players onto the Ranch, each of them having a look of excitement and fear on their faces, all of them having sadness to them and a desire to make a change," she reflected. What she didn't know then: two of the players would, for the first time in Biggest Loser history, quit the show.

At the Biggest Loser finale show, each contestant stood on the scale for the last time. Alison's reaction: "Each of the contestants really showed a dramatic transformation from start to finish. They were all more confident and lost an average of 100 lbs. And the crowd cheering Gail on how special was that moment? Things like that make me so proud to be part of this show." Healthy holiday cooking tips and recipes from Top Chef Richard Blais (Video)

"Top Chef" champ Richard Blais knows a thing or two about cooking and about weight loss -- he has lost 60 pounds over the past eight years, through healthy eating and cooking and with running. The chef now runs marathons, raising money for charity.

This holiday season, Blais offers some ideas for keeping nutrition high as well as flavor, teaming up with Dannon Oikos to develop recipes that feature nonfat Greek yogurt.

But before we get to the recipes, here are a few tips from him on cooking with yogurt:

  • Swap out regular sour cream on your mashed potatoes with Greek nonfat yogurt for a nutritious and creamy-thick taste.
  • Greek nonfat yogurt can be used in dips and dressings as a substitute for regular mayonnaise or sour cream.
  • Use Greek nonfat yogurt in marinades its a great tenderizer.
  • Greek nonfat yogurt is a great substitution for some holiday staple ingredients such as oil, butter, cream cheese or ricotta cheese.
  • Avoid using aluminum products when cooking with yogurt -- its acidity can react negatively with aluminum.

Now how about some healthy mashed potatoes and cheesecake -- really!

Dannon Oikos Greek Yogurt Mashed Potatoes

  • 1 lb red bliss potato
  • 1 tbsp sea salt
  • 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 tbsp minced garlic
  • 1 cup Dannon Oikos plain Greek nonfat yogurt
  • 1 tbsp rosemary, minced
  • 2 tbsp parsley, minced
  • 1 lemon, zest and juice
  • White pepper

Boil the potatoes with the salt until tender. Drain the pot and mash the potatoes while hot.

In a large saute pan over medium heat, saut the garlic in a tablespoon of olive oil. When the garlic releases its aroma, add the herbs and remove from the heat.

Add the contents of the pan to the pot with the mashed potatoes. Stir in the yogurt and remaining olive oil to the potatoes and add a squeeze and zest of lemon. Add pepper to taste.

Makes 6 servings at 145 calories, 7 grams of fat, 17 grams carbohydrates, 2.5 grams fiber, 5.6 grams protein.

Dannon Oikos Greek Yogurt Pumpkin Cheesecake

  • 4 oz. cream cheese
  • cup sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 4 oz. canned pumpkin pie filling
  • 4 oz. Dannon Oikos plain Greek yogurt
  • tsp salt
  • tsp vanilla
  • tsp cinnamon

In a mixer, using the paddle attachment, blend together the cream cheese and sugar.

Add in the eggs one at a time, scraping the bowl after each one.

In a separate bowl, mix together the pumpkin pie filling, yogurt, salt, vanilla and cinnamon.

Add the yogurt mixture into the cream cheese mixture and mix until fully combined.

Fill the desired molds and bake at 300 degrees in a water bath for 15-20 minutes.

Makes 8 servings at 152 calories, 7.2 grams fat, 17.5 grams carbohydrates, 1.2 grams fiber, 5.4 grams protein.

Tips to maintain weight over the holidays

We all know that the arrival of the holidays means tasty foods and treats that are loaded with fat and calories, but that doesnt mean you have to expect all your hard work to stay healthy and lose or maintain your weight to be ruined. All the miles logged, Zumba classes attended, and hours in the gym pumping iron dont have to go to waste by partaking in all the traditional treats of the holidays. To stay on course towards your weight maintenance during the holiday celebrations, whats most important is being mindful about what you are eating.

Portion control is number one on the list of important tips to staying on track. Dont starve yourself all day in anticipation of the large meal or youll sabotage all your hard work by overeating and consuming more calories than you would if you stick to a small, nutritious breakfast and lunch before the main dinner.

When you are sitting down for your main meal, fill your plate with more steamed vegetables and as much white meat, skinless turkey as you like, just watch how much gravy you pour on. Limit your portions of high fat dishes, such as stuffing with gravy, mashed potatoes, and creamy casseroles. When it comes to desserts, pumpkin pie is one of your best choices, as its lower in fat and calories than most other pies, and loaded with antioxidants and vitamins. Although its nutritious, its still important to consume only a small serving of pumpkin pie, or any dessert served. You dont want to deprive yourself of anything, so if your favorite dish is on the high fat list, just take enough to satisfy your craving.

Remember to stay mindful of how you feel. When you feel full stop eating. Just because its the day known for stuffing ourselves doesnt mean you have to continue this tradition.

After your meal is over, rather than taking that traditional nap, go outside for a family walk or game of football. Any activity you can do as a group will aid in not only keeping you on track toward your healthy goals, but will also bring the family closer and create new memories.

Fitness Memberships, Gifts that keep on giving

High calorie holidays are just a couple weeks away and for some it may mean having to deal with some additional unwanted pounds on their body frame. Certainly the writer enjoys his holidays like everyone else, and yes he does like to indulge in those high calorie foods and deserts from time to time. But these bountiful celebrations should not be feared if there is plan to eliminate or reduce the likelihood of additional weight gain. The writer is suggesting a simple solution to consider, one that involves a gift, a gift that can keep on giving. Now the writer has mentioned this before but it is something that needs to be said again, fitness memberships if utilized properly can be that gift that rewards the user over and over again. A person that goes to the health club or gym regularly will benefit from less weight on their joints, more endurance, less injury and fewer trips to the doctor. Certainly a diet low in fats and high in protein should also be included in a persons plan to get fit The writers wife once as gift to him, bought him a membership to once was called Planet Fitness, now World Gym on Sheridan Drive near Hopkins in Amherst New York.

Let me tell you, this was the best gift aside from the birth of his child, this writer ever had because the writer was not only able to loose more weight but was able to complete a three day stomach crunch marathon at the health club. For sure not everyone can have the same results going to a fitness club but this kind of gift can give a person at least a fighting chance at better health and fitness. In addition, World Gym has one of the lowest priced memberships for a 24 hour facility. However, look around for the best deal on a fitness membership; Buffalo New York has many great health clubs to choose from. One more thing to keep in mind most of these clubs have day cares which can give this fitness membership an even greater value especially to parents. Yes it is nice to receive and munch on some of those high calorie foods during the holiday foods during the holiday season but it would be even better to receive the gift of a fitness membership.
