The Perfect Body

Whether we admit it or not, we all are concerned about our physical appearance. Being attractive is an important issue for most people and for many good reasons. Statistics show that having the right look has many advantages in society.

According to the Social Issues Research Center (SIRC), a non-profit institute specializing in global socio-cultural trends, attractive children are more popular with classmates and teachers and on average do better in school. Attractive applicants have better job opportunities and get promoted faster. One study found that in America taller men earned about $600 more per inch than their shorter peers. Attractive people are convicted of crimes less often or receive shorter prison sentences. The list goes on and on. So, it is not at all surprising that good looks play such a big role in our lives.

When you ask people what characteristics make someone attractive, most will say that a good-looking person is slender and fit. This applies to both sexes but in particular to women. Slimness and beauty are so much identified with one another that it seems almost natural to think this way. Historically speaking, it is not. Prior to the 20th century, attractive women were quite curvy. A classical Renaissance painting, titled Three Graces by Raffael (1505), reflects the beauty ideal of that time. By our standards, those ladies look rather overweight. The same goes for the so-called Rubens figures, named after the famous Dutch artists many paintings of nude, fleshy women.

Historians have pointed out that for our ancestors being well fed was a sign of wealth and status because only the well-off could afford an abundance of food, while the poor had little to eat and looked thin and haggard. Today, the situation is reversed: Weight problems mostly affect the lower class, while the upper crust spends millions on diets and fitness programs to stay slim and look youthful.

It is quite fascinating to see how the perception of attractiveness has changed over time. One common denominator, however, seems that beauty ideals were never attainable for most people because they were so unrealistic. Especially women have nearly always faced the impossible: Whether the fashion of the day called for a classical hourglass figure (equal size of hip and bust, narrow waist), an athletic look (muscular, tight pelvis, big bust) or Barbie type body (slim, big bust, tight pelvis, long legs), the vast majority of women was never able to measure up.

Todays demands seem higher than ever. Thanks to the media, we have become accustomed to extremely rigid and uniform standards of beauty, says Kate Fox who writes for SIRC. The current media ideal of thinness for women is achievable by less than 5 percent of the female population. Because TV ads, billboards, magazines, etc. bombard us with images of beautiful people all the time, they make exceptional good looks seem real, normal and attainable, she says. But thats an illusion and it makes people terribly insecure about their appearance.

And even attractive folks can be insecure about their looks and feel pressed to maintain or enhance what nature has given them. Studies have shown that beauty and self-esteem dont always correlate.

Statistically, women tend to be more critical of their appearance than men. Most females dont seem to be satisfied with what they see in the mirror, at least not without makeup. Men have a better self-image and even tend to over-estimate their attractiveness. Gay men are more concerned about how they look than straight men, but lesbians seem to be less worried than heterosexual women, according to the SIRC study.

Whats considered beautiful may differ from country to country and culture to culture, but increasingly there is a global trend to follow the Western standards. In one study that involved young women from around the world, almost all participants named celebrities from Hollywood as their role models for attractiveness. Being skinny, tall, with long hair and perfect teeth and elegantly dressed in Western-style clothing ranked highest on the list of beauty ideals. The ideals of the beauty culture in the industrialized world are rapidly spreading through the remotest areas, affecting the way of life and the sensibility of all, regardless of skin, religious beliefs, or cultural heritage, says Julian Robinson, fashion designer and author of The Quest for Human Beauty (W. W. Norton & Co Inc., 1998).

The downside is that people who dont live up to these standards (the vast majority) are judged and often judge themselves as a failure. For example, prejudices against overweight people can cause especially women to develop very low self-esteem, which can leave them socially isolated and emotionally depressed. These problems are not generated by the weight problems themselves but by the widely accepted association of beauty and thinness. Struggling with weight issues from a health perspective can be hard enough. Having a social stigma attached to it makes it much worse.

While we cannot ignore the cultural standards around us, we can decide for ourselves how we respond to them. The attraction to physical beauty will always be part of our socio-cultural landscape with implications on status, acceptance and suitability as a mate. But that doesnt mean we have to surrender to it like an oppressive force that prevents us from accepting ourselves as we are in every shape or form.

Father's Day weight loss story: Daughter's success inspires dad to get healthy (Photos)

Between 2008 and 2009, Don Burdolski lost his brother, mother and then his wife -- all from serious illnesses. On top of that, he also lost his job of 17 years. His eating habits were, as he says, "fast food, bad food and continued bad habits." He soon found himself at 235 pounds and in need of a change.

The 62-year-old looked to his daughter, Lauren Taylor, 31, who had lost 75 pounds on Nutrisystem and keeps off the weight by returning to the eating plan whenever her weight starts to creep up a few pounds.

"My daughter Lauren inspires me not only because she is my daughter, but also because she can stay focused, organized and determined," he says. "Does that sound like her mother? Heavens yes!"

So in 2010 Burdolski ordered the program, and now he is very near his 180-pound goal.

We asked father and daughter about their weight-loss success:

Q. What made you want to join your daughter on her weight loss journey?

Don:
I joined Nutrisystem due to Lauren's success in using it for weight loss and health. My blood pressure and well being was important. I lost my wife due to an illness, a brother and my mom also in a 2-year-period. I wanted to be healthy and have a quality of life that was active and good.

Q. How much weight have you lost to date?

Don:
I have currently lost 28 pounds and continuing toward another 14 pounds and an ideal weight of 180.

Q. How does it feel to inspire your dad to lose weight and get healthy?

Lauren:
I look at my dad every time I see him and go "Dang, dad! You're getting skinny!" It's crazy to think I inspired him. Lauren inspires me because she is driven, focused and beautiful. Having a daughter who looks like a model is very inspiring. She has drive and desire and accomplishes what she wants. She has made ballet and fitness her daily goal and she makes me proud as a dad.
Lauren: Dad's renewed outlook on life keeps me focused on my own goals.

Q. What will this years Fathers Day be like compared with others?

Don:
I feel good, just had my suit altered for a formal affair (it used to be a 46!), and I look forward to playing with the grandkids, having dinner with my two beautiful daughters and enjoying a rich life.
Lauren: Food has always been part of the occasion. I know this year will just be leaner and full of healthy, yummy treats as we celebrate life.

One of her friends told the Sun that the curvacious singer "drinks ice-cold water to speed up her metabolism, bans carbs after 4 p.m., and sticks to four small meals a day, which are packed with protein." These guidelines are in sync with weight loss recommendations from health expert Dr. Mehmet Oz. In addition, Jennifer exercises regularly. Her trainer, Gunnar Peterson, says that watching her evolve during the years that he worked with her "was incredible." Obesity and Alzheimer's disease

We have all read numerous articles, watched the news reports, and attended talks on various subjects. Every once in a blue moon someone comes along who gives you a jolt with what he or she has to say. That is what happened in the presentation at the Presbyterian Healthplex by Ellen Coman, Ph.D., Clinical Neuropsychologist with the University of New Mexico Center for Neuropsychological Services.

The title of the talk was 'Normal vs. Abnormal Aging.' I thought I would be hearing information on the physical aspects of aging, such as loss of height, skin changes, thinning hair, vision and hearing problems, etc. A fat reduction review can help you construct a clear outline of what you need to focus on to accomplish your fat burning goal if you're a rookie; or serve as a reminder for these who are at an advanced or more improve phase of their losing weight strategy. But this was not about any of that. Indeed, the talk was much more interesting, as it was about dementia and Alzheimer's--what is normal vs. abnormal aging when it comes to our memory and cognitive learning skills. It was comforting to know that normal age-related changes are gradual and mild until around age 50. In short, for most people, they are 'not losing it' at the age of 50. And, it was reassuring to learn that even in advanced old age, defined as the 80's and older, many people retain their mental and physical abilities. (My mother was one of them.) Alzheimer's does, however, begin to show up at the rate of 40 percent for those age 85 and older. Now THAT is a scary figure. (Article continues below the ad.)

Dr. Coman covered what is normal aging (which is NOT dementia)--e.g, you can't find your car in the parking lot or remember where you placed your keys--or mild cognitive changes that begin after age 50, and where the boundary is for dementia, which does not always lead to Alzheimer's. Mild cognitive problems can result from many factors, including stress, poor nutrition, depression, alcoholism and vitamin deficiencies, disturbed sleep, poor vision or hearing, smoking, and medications, among others. Age-related memory changes are not the same thing as dementia, and have more to do with our ability to "get access to the memory files in our brains," Dr. Coman pointed out. As we get older, we are more susceptible to distraction, and find it more difficult to switch quickly from one cognitive activity to another. In short, multi-tasking is not always good!

What are the risk factors for Alzheimer's disease?

  • Age - the older you are, the higher your risk
  • Head injury with loss of conscious for 15 minutes or longer (think of athletes, especially fighters)
  • Cardiovascular risk factors--heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke
  • Lower education
  • Late-life depression
  • Family history of dementia'
  • Sleep apnea and other sleep disturbances
  • Smoking
  • Central obesity in midlife, which affects 50 percent of adults

It was the obesity factor that caught my attention. Of course, why not? If you are obese, then you probably have the cardiovascular risk factors, too. Another good reason to lose weight and put yourself on a healthy lifestyle journey.

Is there anything we can do to slow down these changes? Protective factors include having a high level of education, high occupational status, high income (wealthier people generally have more means to maintain a healthier lifestyle with regular medical check-ups, etc.), workplace complexity, exposure to stimulating environments, use of cultural and educational resources (get out of the house and take an educational or fun class!), intact marriage, and a lengthy marriage to an intelligent spouse! (We all laughed at that last one.) So now you know why they tell you to work crossword puzzles as you get older. Yes, some of these might be more than difficult for the typical person to achieve, but that doesn't mean you can't work toward such objectives. In short, if you are retired, KEEP BUSY by challenging your mind. Your brain is a muscle, and needs to be exercised regularly.

This was a most enlightening talk, and there were so many questions, it ran over by 30 minutes (2 hours instead of 90 minutes). But the material was so interesting. FYI, if someone wants to be tested for mild cognitive impairment or dementia, it is best to be referred by a medical doctor to the specialist.
