Celebrity trainer Tracy Anderson reveals wedding weight loss secrets

Tracy Anderson, the personal trainer to stars like Kim Kardashian and Nicole Richie, knows that looking like a fairy tale princess at your wedding can make you want to shed pounds fast. Her advice: you can look like a star without resorting to risky fad diets like the feeding tube diet. Tracy helped Nicole slim down for her 2010 wedding. "Nicole worked out six days a week, she learned dance aerobics, she did her muscular structure work, and she did it in such a healthy beautiful way," Tracy told FitSugar.

Tracy recommends kick-starting your diet and exercise plan when you first start planning your wedding. "The thing that is most unfortunate is when a bride comes to me and has never done anything before and is like 'Oh my god, I have to lose 30 pounds in a month,'" Tracy said in her FitSugar interview. And forget the feeding tube diet. "If I were the husband-to-be, I can think of nothing less sexy than my fiance installing a feeding tube to look 120 pounds thinner on the wedding day. I'd probably call it off!" She advises eating clean, with lean protein and veggies. A celebrity who follows the Eat Clean diet: Angelina Jolie.

As for fitness, Tracy doesn't have a specific workout plan. Easy ways to make healthy holiday treats

Special holiday treats are part of the seasons charm. Everyone looks forward to seasonal goodies. But these foods often come with a high calorie punch. Fortunately, there are easy and tasty ways to reduce the calories and fat content of many favorites.

  • Get rid of trans fat. Baked goods can be sources of trans fat. For home baked goods choose trans-fat-free tub margarines and canola oil instead of shortening or stick margarines. Read food labels and nix the items with partially hydrogenated fat which indicates trans fat.
  • Use low-fat dairy. Whole milk products are sources of saturated fat. Using low-fat, skim milk, fat-free evaporated milk, and fat-free sweetened condensed milk can yield as mouth-watering a product as full-fat dairy. This is also true for the low-fat and fat-free versions of sour cream. Plain Greek yogurt is a tasty substitute for sour cream in twice-baked potatoes and casseroles. I have used fat-free yogurt to replace half of the fat in coffee cake recipes with pleasing results.
  • Substitute egg whites for yolks. I have nothing against whole eggs. There is research that indicates healthy people can enjoy eggs several times a week with no ill effects. But at this time of year, we can go way over our allotment with all the egg-containing goodies around. With that in mind, two egg whites can be used in place of a whole egg, or use the egg substitutes in the dairy case.
  • Replace chocolate chips with dried fruit. Raisins, chopped dates, and cranberries offer flavors of their own and add a chewy texture. If you must add the chips, reduce the amount and use dark chocolate.
  • Create healthy dips to replace the sour cream types. Hummus, salsa, corn relish, and bean dips are more healthful choices than sour cream versions.
  • Eat half of the special treat and share the other half with your spouse or good friend. 2 egg whites

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line cookie sheet with parchment paper. Beat egg whites until soft peaks form. Add vanilla and beat until peaks fold over. Add sugar one tablespoon at a time, mixing well after each addition. Using a tablespoon, drop meringue unto parchment-lined cookie sheet. Put cookie sheet into oven and turn oven off. Leave cookies in oven until oven has cooled. Gently remove cookies and store in a covered container. These will last for a few days.

Getting enough nutrients on gluten-free diet requires careful planning

From Venus Williams to Brendan Brazier, athletes power up with vegan diets

Plant-based diet power just may become the new mantra among athletes ranging from bodybuilders to tennis players, according to Reuters. Their reasons vary from improving health, as in the case of Venus Williams who became a vegan after her diagnosis with an autoimmune disease, to optimizing their level of fitness, as with marathon champ Brendan Brazier, author of "Thrive: The Vegan Nutrition Guide to Optimal Performance in Sports and Life" (click to order).

"I knew I had to improve," Brendan told Reuters. "I tried high carb, low carb, high protein, low protein, all sorts of different diets. Why Are We So Confused About Our Health Needs?

Two out of three Americans would benefit from losing weight and becoming more physically fit. For one out of three, it could be a lifesaver. Weight problems and obesity, combined with other diet- and lifestyle related diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and cancer, are at the forefront of our ever-worsening public health crisis. All this is well documented and communicated, and yet, it seems, there is no turning point in sight.

What would it take to persuade Americans to take better care of their health? One would think that fear of debilitating illnesses or premature aging would be enough motivation to get the ball rolling, but nothing of the kind seems to materialize.

For decades, we have been bombarded with messages that health-promoting behavior is important, and most folks agree with those goals but without much consequence for their actions, according to Jane E. Brody, a health columnist for the New York Times. She suggests that health experts should reframe the messages theyve been giving and make them more relevant to everyday life.

People are thoroughly confused about the often-contradictory messages theyre receiving. Those who follow health news at all must be especially frustrated with the so-called new findings that regularly invalidate their efforts to live more healthily.

There is still general agreement that our weight problems come from overeating and lack of exercise. But we also hear that this may or may not be true, or at least it may not be the whole story.

For example, Eat up, was the headline of a recent article on the benefits of calorie-restriction, which was based on one studys conclusion that slim monkeys did not have a longer life expectancy than their overweight peers. In other words, if eating less doesnt let you live longer, why not dig in while you can? Exercise is not enough when it comes to weight loss, says another. So why bother getting sweaty?

In the face of such inconsistencies in our health messages, who can blame those who simply give up and let the chips fall wherever they may?

Both dieting and exercising are thought of as temporary measures (primarily for weight loss) by many who hope for quick fixes, as opposed to making permanent lifestyle changes. When a particular goal e.g. shedding a few pounds for a wedding or a reunion is achieved, the return to old habits is almost inevitable. The motivation is gone and so is the stick-to-itiveness. But its also the confusion that comes with the mixed signals were constantly confronted with.

A proper diet is important for health and exercise is necessary to keep our bodies strong, says Carrie Burrows, founder of thebootcampblog.org. There should be no confusion about that. But then the experts have us believe that getting enough exercise is the only thing that matters because we can burn off calories, no matter where they come from or how many we consume. Or, that the kind of foods we eat makes all the difference, whether we exercise or not.
