Start here: HCG Q&A

As this is my first article discussing HCG as an extreme weight loss tool, I would like to start off by writing a simple Q&A for those interested in this diet. A fat reducing overview can help you construct a clear outline of what you require to focus on to achieve your fat reducing purpose if you're a novice; or serve as a reminder for those who are at an advanced or more enhance level of their losing weight plan. While each individual needs to look within themselves to decide whether or not this extreme diet is for them, I am here to offer my advice and full support for those who choose to explore it. HCG was a huge success for me, a skeptic of all "fad" diets. So without further ado, let's begin!

Q: What exactly his HCG?

A: Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a glycoprotein hormone produced during pregnancy, and is also produced in the pituitary gland of males and females of all ages. Don't let this scare you...if you are female, you cannot become pregnant while taking HCG...if you are male, you will not turn into a woman!

Q: How does HCG stimulate weight loss?

A: While the effects of HCG have yet to be proven, countless people can recant success stories for you. The combination of HCG with a very low calorie diet (VLCD) stimulate an average of 0.5 pounds per day in women, and up to 1 pound per day in men. Sounds exciting doesn't it? Well it is!

Q: What is the HCG diet protocol?

A: Briefly, there are 4 phases of the diet:

Phase 1: Two days of loading where you eat all day and night, everything in sight! The fattiest, sugariest foods you can get your hands on...this is obviously a perk of the diet!

Phase 2: A cycle of no less than 21 days of HCG plus a strict 500 calorie diet (no carbs no sugars). While 500 calories sounds extreme, it is important to note the the HCG releases about 1,500 calories of stored fat into your body every day. So you actually aren't hungry!

Phase 3: Sugars and carbs are slowly added back into the diet.

Phase 4: Maintenance for life! By this point you will have so many tips and tricks in your "toolbox" that maintaining your new healthy weight will be easy as pie (and you can even eat the pie!)

Q: Where can I purchase HCG?

A: There are many forms of HCG available: prescription, homeopathic, injections, drops, pellets, etc. Choosing what form to use is user defined. However it is important to get high quality HCG which can bet tricky to find, especially on the internet. I will focus on this issue in an upcoming article.

Q: All this sounds great, but does HCG actually work?

A: YES YES YES!!! Personally, I lost 20 pounds in less than a month...not too shabby! My boyfriend lost the same amount in about 3 weeks, and countless friends have all lost the same.

So should you try the HCG diet? Only you can answer that. Study it, make informed decisions, and certainly talk to people who have used it themselves. FDA advisory panel recommends that obesity drugs be tested for heart risks

An FDA advisory panel recommended on Thursday that new obesity drugs be required to conduct studies to help determine if they increase risks for the heart. Citing a "bad track record" when it comes to the history of drugs used to help weight loss and the possibility of "cardiovascular risk," the panel of 23 voted 17-6 to recommend the added heart studies.

At the current time, Orlistat (also known as tetrahydrolipstatin) is the only drug approved by the FDA for long term use in the fight against obesity. It is marketed as a prescription drug called Xenical by Roche and as an over-the-counter weight loss supplement called Alli from GlaxoSmithKline, according to Wikipedia.

Current prescription guidelines for Xenical require patients to have a BMI (Body Mass Index) of greater than 30, or a BMI greater than 27 if other risk factors such as diabetes or hypertension are present. Although Xenical is the only prescription strength obesity drug that the FDA has approved in more than 10 years, a FDA panel recommended in February (by a 20-2 vote) that a new drug called Qnexa (from Vivus Inc.) be approved for weight loss. The FDA has yet to act on that recommendation.

Qnexa (phentermine/topiramate) and another drug called Contrave (Bupropion/naltrexone) have both been denied FDA approval in the last several years due to concerns to cardiovascular health risks. Also, drug companies Amylin and Takeda chose last year to end phase II testing of obesity drugs when some in the testing started developing "antibody-related" responses to the drugs.

While some on the advisory panel opposed the requirement as a wasteful use of industry funds, the prevailing attitude kept in mind by the panel was the more than $21 BILLION in legal damages set aside by Wyeth for the health damages caused by the notorious Fen-Phen (Fenfluramine/Phentermine) and Sibutramine, which were both withdrawn from the market after ties to serious cardiovascular events in patients.

Although the new recommendations were called excessive by some in the panel, they have a precedent already in place requiring similar testing for diabetes drugs after GlaxoSmithKline's drug Avandia (Rosiglitazone) caused severe health problems. Legal expenses related to Avandia may end up costing GSK more than a billion dollars to settle claims.

An important aspect of the recommendations made by the panel is to require testing of patients with higher levels of cardiovascular risk, such as heavier patients or those with hypertension. Current testing procedures allow those with a history of higher cardiovascular risks to be excluded.

Weight Watchers wins for shedding pounds in new study comparing diet options (Video)

Looks as if Weight Watchers deserves its name: a new study comparing expensive behavioral weight loss groups led by psychologists to Weight Watchers revealed that the commercial diet program won for weight loss and participants' ability to stay on their diets, reported the Los Angeles Times on Oct. 10. To determine what really works when it comes to diets, the researchers contrasted psychologist-led "behavioral weight loss" programs against a 48-week Weight Watchers membership. The psychologists who led the study's weight loss groups were specifically trained in behavior management and nutrition. In contrast, Weight Watchers meetings are led by peer counselors who have succeeded on the Weight Watchers plan and are trained to become mentors. Despite the difference in credentials of the groups' leaders, the researchers concluded that for shedding pounds successfully, Weight Watchers won. And celebrities agree: both Jennifer Hudson and, more recently, Jessica Simpson succeeded in losing significant amounts of weight by relying on Weight Watchers.

Garden of the Gods: More than a walk in the park

Colorado Springs has had a pretty mild winter this year. Not too much snow, and when it does snow, it's gone in a day. There have been a quite a few days where one can enjoy the weather and exercise outside. There are many wonderful places to hike/walk in Colorado Springs. Ute Valley Park is one place that is nice to hike in, but if that is a little ovewhelming for you, Garden of the Gods is another place in which to walk or hike.

Besides the Wellness Walk every Wednesday, Garden of the Gods has paved and unpaved trails to walk or hike. A fat reduction overview can help you produce a clear summarize of what you need to focus on to accomplish your fat burning target if you're a beginner; or serve as a reminder for these who are at an intermediate or more boost level of their weight loss strategy. Following are seven steps that can serve as suggestions for your personal weight loss program. The first thing that one must understand is that losing weight and losing fat is not the same thing. Many weight loss programs have tricked people into considering that it is the same, but most diets and weight loss applications only work by causing a person's body to lose more muscle tissue and water than actual body fat, more help please visit The Fat Loss Factor. As you drive into the park, there is a fairly large parking lot on the left side where the Perkins Central Garden Trail is located. The walkways here are paved and well-maintained, are stroller and wheelchair accessible, and there is a restroom off to the left before you start your walk. It is a 1 1/2 mile loop and there is less that a 30-foot rise on this trail, making it great for beginners.

A little more challenging is the Siamese Twins trail. It is an easy 1-mile loop with less than 150-foot rise in elevation, making it great for those wanting a little more of a workout.

If you're ready to take on more, the Chambers/Bretag/Palmer Trail is a moderate 3-mile trail nearly circling the entire park. It has less than a 250-foot rise and it has a more rolling, rocky terrain away from traffic.

You can pick up a full-color map of all the trails in the Garden of the Gods Visitor and Nature Center. The park is open year-round (hours vary by season), and is free to the public. For more information, please go to Garden of the Gods.

Blueberries can improve insulin sensitivity & reduce abdominal fat

Blueberries are a highly nutritious food, packed to the brim with fibre (important for blood sugar regulation as it lowers the glycaemic index of whatever you eat) and antioxidants.

Studies on blueberries have found that they may:

  • Reverse & prevent the effects of aging
  • Improve insulin sensitivity and glucose regulation
  • Lower cholesterol
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Decrease abdominal fat
  • Lower triglycerides
  • Prevent urinary tract infections, in the same manner as cranberries do
  • Prevent cancer
  • Prevent heart disease
  • Improve motor behavioural learning, co-ordination, balance & memory
  • Reduce the chance of developing Alzheimers disease in those predisposed
  • Inhibit mutagenesis (cancer) in breast and cervical tissue in vitro
  • Reduce the risk of death from cancers of the breast, endometrium and prostate in conjunction with a high fibre, low fat diet.
  • Decrease oxidative stress in 2 regions of the brain
  • Result in better retention of signal-transmitting neurons in the brain
  • Reduce ischaemic brain damage after a stroke
  • Positively affect genes related to fat-burning and storage and glucose uptake in muscle tissue

Blueberries are one of the most highly antioxidant foods you can eat, due to their anthocyanin content, a powerful antioxidant which gives dark red/blue fruits and vegetables their colour. When blueberries were tested alongside 40 other fruits and vegetables in a study designed to identify and quantify the antioxidant capacity of foods, blueberries ranked number one, well ahead of blackberries, strawberries, spinach, broccoli, oranges, apples & bananas with an ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) of 25, as opposed to only 20 for its nearest competitor, the blackberry.

As central obesity, or abdominal adiposity is strongly associated with polycystic ovarian syndrome, increasing the amount of blueberries in your diet may be very beneficial, in addition to a healthy diet and regular exercise program, in reducing weight, especially around the middle. The amounts used in the study by the Cardioprotection Research Laboratory at the University of Michigan was equal to 2% of the diets over a 3 month period. You may need to rely on frozen blueberries for much of the year to achieve this, but as medicine goes, this has to be one of the tastiest!

Just a final note of caution: dont eat your blueberries with dairy products. When the two foods are eaten together, the casein in milk appears to block the antioxidant potential of fruits, vegetables, grains and even tea! Sad news I know, but when you are taking Hippocrates advice to let food be your medicine and your medicine be your food it is worth considering.

The result: Sharon chose the Atkins low-carb diet and now, 28 pounds lighter, calls it "a life changing experience."

One of the main myths about the Atkins diet: It's too rigid and strict for convenience. Wrong! In fact, Sharon's husband Ozzy, son Jack and her assistant have joined her on the diet "because it is so convenient. It's so yummy. It's all about proteins and vegetables," explained Sharon.   • Breakfast: Sharon chooses high protein foods like scrambled eggs and bacon. Tip: You could also enjoy sliced tomatoes with your protein.
  • Lunch: As Sharon points out in her blog for Atkins, the holidays are a great time for low-carb dieters! "You can eat as much turkey, sausage and veggies as you want!" she wrote in her blog. Craving comfort foods? Enjoy meat loaf (just skip the bread crumbs when you prepare it).   • Snacks: For those of us who can't resist sweets, Sharon recommends Atkins snack bars. I'll eat half a bar for dessert after lunch, and save the other half for after dinner," she said. Now that's a smart snacker!

Life Post Bariatric Surgery: Precautions To Follow

Bariatric Surgery is the last resort for morbidly obese people who drastically fail to lose weight through diet, exercise and lifestyle changes. This surgery comes with considerable risks and is not for everyone because a lot of care and after surgery lifestyle changes need to be administers and followed. Besides, the susceptibility to get side effects like trouble breathing, infection (mainly SSI), bleeding etc. are also high. Therefore following certain strict precautionary steps for diet, work-outs and lifestyle after surgery as directed by doctors and surgeons is important. Here are few basic guidelines:-

Diet:

Take care to eat according to dietician and surgeons recommendation. Not doing so can lead to serious consequences, even cause weight gain.

Eat as healthy as possible with the frequency well portioned throughout the day. Diet that includes proteins, liquid, soups etc. is good.

The shift to more solid and heavy diet should be gradual. And once you do, take care not to eat too big morsels or gobble food. Take time to chew each bite, grinding it as fine as you can. Your stomach will be able to digest food better this way. Ideally wait for 2-3 minutes before taking another bite. Quick eating can lead to vomiting, mal-absorption or diarrhea.

Limit Snacks, alcohol and smoking after weight loss surgery.

While eating avoid drinking fluids as it might cause fuller or satiating feeling to come sooner, even before you have adequate meal.

Cut down sugar intake to 3-5 grams per serving and avoid foods that exceed this limit.

Milk shakes, high fat foods and carbonated drinks needed to be chucked out completely from your eating habits.

Workouts

Strenuous exercise, activity or workouts immediately after surgery is not recommended. Relax and allow the surgery to heal before starting with any physical activity. This even includes bathing in tub - avoid it. Just take a simple shower.

Aquatic exercises are good option. They require less energy and body movements to perform. But before doing them take appropriate counsel from experts and doctors.

Remember that to stay fit post bariatric surgery you need to have robust, yet gentle workout regimen which is always supervised.

Stay Careful About

Developing infections during and after bariatric surgery is a constant risk. Most infection can take considerably longer time to develop. But right care and staying vigilant can save you from all the
discomfiture. Common infections include.

Surgical or internal surgery with symptoms like swelling, pain aches or some kind discharge from the surgery site.

Panniculitis: - It is an infection that can occur after many months of the surgery with skin nodule tenderness and inflammations as symptoms. Weight loss after surgery causes the skin to lose, developing excessive folds. This infection develops under the skin folds. Therefore people who undergo bariatric surgery need to follow proper care and hygiene practices.

Most of us follow a very sophisticated skin care regimen which in our opinion is sufficient to take care of our skin. However we often forget to curb the sinful habits that poke a damaging hole into that regimen. The obnoxious habit of touching a pimple, touching skin with dirty hands, wiping sweat with dirty handkerchief etc. are all - oblivious to us, but deadly skin sins. These skin habits become a part of your lifestyle or may even be part of your skin care regimen. It is not only difficult to differentiate them, but more often you are ignorant about them. So heres a list of top 5 skin sins you commit and ways to get rid of them.

1. Filthy Cell-Phones Leaning Against Your Ear & Cheek

Cell phones lie on variety of unhygienic places like jackets, tables, purse, counters, counter tops etc. This makes them breeding ground for germs and bacteria. You have no idea how dirty a seemingly clean mobile could be. When you lean the cell against your ear and cheek, your skin becomes vulnerable to bacteria and germs

Remedy: Get good Tea Tree oil cleansing wipes or Tea Tree oil soap which have natural antibacterial qualities and wipe cell-phone surface each time it contacts a dirty surface.

2. Not Caring About Sun Exposure

Sunshine is good, in fact great, but within moderation. You cant neglect the fact that skin gets prematurely old due to sum damage it incurs. Excessive sunbathing, not covering exposed part when in sun are serious follies. Wrinkles, uneven skin texture and tan are few concerns which damage skin due to sun exposure with likelihood of cancer also included.

Remedy: Avoid going out in sun during days peak hours. If you have to, then adequately cover your self, wear good SPF and dont frequently sunbath on beach.

3. Reusing Makeup Brush Without Washing Them

Ignoring hygiene of your makeup kit, especially makeup brushes is another major blunder. Proper
cleansing is important, even if these are personal brushes, exclusively used by you. Bacteria, dust and makeup residue on the makeup brushes can cause major skin damage leading to infections, pimples or allergies.

Remedy: Wash the brushes once every week in good lather. You can also wipe the bristles with good cleansing wipes preferably Tea Tree Oil Wipes or Eucalyptus wipes. This renders brushes clean and ready to use each time.

4. Using Dirty Hands and Handkerchief On Face

This is done more often and the biggest reason behind acne and zits. Hands touch innumerable surfaces which are dirty and germ infested. Using same hand on face will obviously make it vulnerable.

Remedy: Avoid touching face with dirty hands. Use good tea tree oil cleansing wipes to clean face off sweat and dirt instead of using handkerchief. You can even keep hand sanitizers and liquid soap to clean hands before touching face.

5. Improper Diet

Diet is the big factor behind dull and lackluster skin. A healthy diet can significantly improve skin health and protect it against other damages. Wrong food combinations like oily- fried food, excessive intake of coffee, high fat content foods etc can cause problems.

Remedy: Keep a check on your food intake. Dont skip breakfast or exclude other nutrition from your diet. Keep yourself hydrated with 8-7 glasses of water.
