Gabby's a yogurt fan, she told Seventeen magazine in a recent interview. Her favorite variety: YoCrunch yogurt, which she describes as "like an apple pie in a cup! You have your apples on the bottom, your yogurt in the middle, and piecrust crumbs on top."

For Jordyn, a good diet begins with a good breakfast. She typically eats cereal with milk, and ranks Special K among her favorite varieties. For snacks, she follows Jerry Seinfeld's lead, munching on cereals such as Cracklin' Oat Bran, according to Sports Illustrated. Jordyn's favorite food, according to the U.S. gymnastics team site, is protein-rich and fiber-rich hummus.

The K-E Diet Quick and Potentially Dangerous

Shedding pounds in a hurry is never easy and its certainly not without health concerns. Yet, the so-called crash diets rank among the most popular weight loss programs in America. In our culture of instant gratification, getting fast results is what seems to matter most.

Now a new program is making headlines that elevates the meaning of radical weight loss to a whole new level. The K-E diet, abbreviation for Ketogenic Enteral Nutrition, promises astounding short-term success without hunger pangs or the need for exercise.

And its radical alright, even by the looks of it. Instead of following a specific meal plan, dieters have a feeding tube inserted through their nose into their stomach to facilitate a constant drip of a protein and fat solution mixed with water that can lower their daily calorie intake to about 800. Although this equals a near-starvation scenario, those who have tried the procedure say they never felt hungry.

Its a hunger-free, effective way of dieting, said Dr. Oliver Di Pietro of Bay Harbor Islands, Florida, who offers the program in his clinic. Within a few hours, your hunger and appetite go away completely, so patients are actually not hungry at all for the whole 10 days [the program lasts]. Thats whats so amazing about this diet.

Although the K-E diet is not entirely new and has been in use in Europe for some time, it has suddenly attracted wide attention over here ever since Jessica Schnaider, a soon-to-be bride, has been wearing the feeding device in public for over a week so she could slim down enough to fit into her wedding gown.

I dont have all the time on the planet just to focus an hour and a half a day on exercise, so I came to the doctor, I saw the diet and I said, You know what? Why not? Let me try it. So I decided to go ahead and give it a shot, she said in an interview with ABC News.

Dr. Di Pietro asserts that his approach is perfectly safe. He says body fat is burned off through a process called ketosis that leaves muscle tissue intact. Although exercise is not required during the short diet period to ensure weight loss, Dr. Di Pietro agrees that exercising to maintain muscles may still be a good idea.

When the K-E diet first made the news, many nutrition experts responded with skepticism and a few were downright outraged. Any extreme low-calorie diet is associated with side effects [such as] kidney stones, dehydration, headaches, said Dr. Louis Aronne, director of the Comprehensive Weight Control Program at New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Nutrition should probably be included in that. If you lose muscle mass and water, whats the point of that.

That is a problem with most crash diets. The quick success in weight loss rarely lasts. As soon as people go back to their normal eating habits, they regain their lost pounds and sometimes add even more. This can result in the notorious yo-yo effect when body weight fluctuates considerably within relatively short periods of time.

It has nothing at all to do with health and basically endorses the notion that weight loss by any means is acceptable.

Dr. Di Pietro argues that his method applies mostly to people who are in need of a quick fix and not to those who have large amounts of weight to lose or deal with weight-related illnesses, such as diabetes or heart problems. I get a lot of brides, nervous eaters, he said. But that may not be enough justification for resorting to such radical measures, according to Dr. Jodi Krumholz, director of Nutrition at the Renfew Center in Philadelphia, who specializes in the treatment of eating disorders. Even though they might do this one time for the wedding, I think there can be addictive qualities to these diets, and I think that someone might continue to do something like this. And it could put them in a really dangerous low weight place, she said.

Healthy downtown San Francisco lunch picks

When youre a busy worker bee, its easy to find yourself trapped in a 9 to 5 food rut. Tempting as it is to order online again from the deli downstairs or grab your third overstuffed burrito of the week, with just a little planning its easy to make healthier choices that will shake up your routine the key to making any lifestyle change stick.

Here are two Bay Area chains (downtown locations listed) that lend being virtuous a little pizzazz.

Talking with Billy Blanks and his new PT 24/7 DVD workout system (Photos)

Billy Blanks has been out of the fitness spotlight for a bit, but the Tae Bo pioneer is back in a big way with a new comprehensive workout DVD set called PT 24/7. PT stands for physical training, and Blanks can do that like no one else with his kickbox-inspired aerobics, fantastic instruction and varied workouts.

Right now PT 24/7 is available online and through infomercials but is scheduled to be in stores on Oct. 25.

What's in the set?

  • Seven DVD workouts: Basics, Cardio, Cardio Burn, Ripped Core, Boot Camp Power, Combo Sculpt, Body Blast. For time-crunched exercisers, the workouts are 30 minutes long.
  • B2 resistance bands and kickboxing gloves that hook together and connect to your feet
  • Billy's Nutrition Guide: A four-week eating plan with tips and quick recipes
  • Rotation calendar: A poster-sized four-week wall chart that lets you keep track of your workout, weight, BMI and inches.

As always, in addition to great coaching and tips, Blanks provides inspiration and motivation in his workouts, talking right to you, the exerciser. We've done similar kickboxing workouts but this series really has you doing the moves correctly for maximum results.

We asked Blanks a few quick questions about his new program:

Q. How is your new program different than Tae Bo?


A. My new PT 24/7 system is a complete seven-week program including resistance training, a nutrition guide and a rotation calendar. You get the Billy Bands and gloves and seven 30-minute workouts. Ive never done 30-minute workouts before.

He also cited research showing that intermittent fasting improves the metabolism and even may reduce the risk of dementia. 'Biggest Loser's' Francelina Morillo on boyfriend: 'We're motivating each other' (Photos)

Did you know that "The Biggest Loser" has a better romantic track record than pretty much every dating show on TV? It has happened again this season -- Francelina Morillo and Jeff Nichols, both 25, made a love connection on the "Biggest Loser" ranch and we talked to Morillo about it Tuesday afternoon. She was eliminated this week, keeping her beau on the ranch for another week.

We asked her why she thought the show worked so well at romance and what set off romantic sparks between her and Jeff.

"You get to see the person at their worst, and you see them blossom and grow and become this better version of themselves, so you just learn to appreciate them and admire them in a different way," she said in a phone interview with reporters.

A shared background led them toward each other.

"We have sort of the same stories," she said. "Our fathers passed away. They both had tumors and we dealt with the situation in the same manner. And on the show, we got to see each other grow and open up and just blossom into just such amazing people, and we learned to appreciate each other."

She lives in Albany, NY, and Nichols lives in Chicago, but Francelina and Jeff are training together in Chicago for the March finale.

"Were working out together and were motivating each other till the end," she said.

And as most people know, working out is only part of the battle. The other, larger battle is fought in the kitchen. We wanted to know how her eating habits have changed. She said that portion control has been crucial in her weight loss of more than 75 pounds.

"I was a compulsive binger, so I was eating a lot of healthy stuff, but I was binging on everything that was healthy," she said. "And now Im all about portion size and how if you have too much of a good thing, its also bad.

"Now I just fuel my body and Im not thinking so much about 'Oh, this tastes good. Let me just have a ton of it.' You know, its different," she continued.

And what fuels her body now?

"Honestly I am a meat eater. I love chicken, making salads, fruit with some peanut butter.
