Biggest Loser season 13 week 15 recap: Makeover finale

Biggest Loser season 13 week 15 was only an hour long tonight, but there was plenty of pomp, circumstance and sweat at the White House with a workout featuring First Lady Michelle Obama, who can Burpee with the best of them. But after a misguided melted-cheese meltdown in her DC hotel room, Chris found herself on the receiving end of the elimination vote, which was no surprise.

In the continuation of last weeks makeover show, the spiffed-up contestants and trainers got to meet First Lady Michelle Obama and her awe-inspiring arms. Shes definitely a fan of the show because she knew everyones names and everyones stories.

She told the contestants about the Lets Move initiative to combat childhood obesity, and Bob took that opportunity to get everyone out of their fancy clothes and into workout clothes. But after a treadmill talk with Bob, she got her stuff together and vowed to fight on.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch (NEVER GETS OLD), it was time for the weigh-in. Howd they do while in Washington?

Buddy: 9

Kim: 2

Jeremy: 11

Conda: 5 (she had a 1-pound disadvantage from last weeks challenge, so its 4)

Mark: 4 (he made it to One-derland; its rare that a guy does that on the ranch)

Chris: +2 (all in mayonnaise and peanut butter)

Elimination: Kim and Chris were up for elimination. Support has always been stronger for Kim than it has for Chris, but Kim is a big threat to the remaining contestants. But in the end, the votes went against Chris.

The update: Chris started the show at 240 pounds and shes now at 156 and looks years younger than her old Mrs. Claus persona. She has her entire family working out together.

Second, consider your options. Your plans should allow you to enjoy yourself but not completely undo all the progress you have already made. Perhaps you can increase your exercise regimen and observe your diet extra carefully in the days before the event. Or there may be health-promoting activities available on site. While you are attending a wedding, reunion or business conference at a resort, make sure to take full advantage of all the spa and workout amenities.

Third, anticipate what problems or situations you might encounter along the way that may challenge or prevent you from reaching or maintaining your goal. Write down each problem, including social- and other environmental challenges, emotional triggers as well as old thought patterns you might revert to.

Fourth, once you have put together your list of potential challenges and weighed your options, you have all the tools you need to develop a strategy to keep yourself on the right track. All you have to do is follow through. (I know, easier said than one.)

Dr. Oz's belly-blasting supplements and saffron hunger suppressor

It's February and that means it's ratings sweeps time in TV land. What does that mean for people trying to lose weight? A barrage of "miracle" treatments, diets, supplements and studies.

Today's Dr. Oz Show lengthened your health-food store shopping list once again with a selection of his "belly-blasting supplements." What are they?

  1. 7-KETO: He has mentioned this DHEA supplement before on other episodes. It is said to boost your metabolism.
  2. Forskolin: This mint-based supplement is supposed to help your body burn fat.
  3. Caraway seeds: Ever see a dish of caraway seeds at the door of an Indian restaurant? They're there as a type of "after-dinner mint" to help with digestion and bloating. Dr. Oz suggests that if you're prone to gassiness and bloating, a handful of seeds might help.
  4. Relora: This Chinese herbal supplement is supposed to help reduce stress. Increased stress production can increase cortisol, a stress hormone that can pack on weight in the midsection.

As Dr. Oz mentioned, don't go on a vitamin shop bender and buy all of these. Focus your attention on what your biggest issue is and try one of the supplements to see if it helps. Healthy back-to-school lunch tips and ideas

With childhood obesity on the rise, it's important to pack your little scholars a healthy, appealing lunch. And if you're steering your child toward weight management, don't make the lunch too skimpy -- after all, they've got the entire school day to function off those calories, so make the meal substantial but balanced.

Here are some tips we've compiled that should make lunch making easier:

Don't "free for all" on the weekends: "By feasting on whatever you want on the weekend, you'll cancel out five days' worth of healthy eating," Stoler says.

Lunchbox ideas:

Funky Monkey fruit snacks: Aside from apples or juice-packed fruit cups, it can be hard for a piece of fruit to survive a lunchbox or brown bag. These freeze-dried bits of fruit come in creative flavor combos, like MangOJ, Pink Pineapple, and Bananamon.

Veggie-hummus wrap: You can stuff a lot of veggies into this sandwich idea. Spread a Flatout wrap (full of fiber and protein) with hummus (more protein and some healthy fat) and add matchstick pieces of carrots, zucchini, lightly steamed green beans and red pepper.

Simply GoGurt: Most kids love those squeezable tubes of yogurt. This version, from Yoplait, is free from artificial colors, flavors and sweeteners, and comes in Strawberry and Mixed Berry flavors. Keep them in the freezer, then pop one in their lunch and they should be partially thawed by lunchtime (it's more like ice cream that way).

Tips for weight loss resolutions

The New Year is here. And it is at this time that diet programs and supplements are touted in the media as ways to lose weight and make life better. Before spending time and money on something that may not work or that may be unhealthy, consider these points first.

  1. Be clear about what you want to accomplish. Set weight-loss goals that are doable. For example, instead of stating that you want to lose weight, make a goal to lose ten pounds.
  2. Be mindful of what you do. This means concentrate on what you are eating when you eat. Turn off the TV, get away from the computer, and eat meals at a table, not in the car.
  3. Keep a record of what you eat. Write down what and how much of everything that goes into your mouth. This is one of the most beneficial ways to change eating habits. A food diary provides information about eating challenges and shows the progress being made.
  4. Go for the healthy diet plans if you need structure. Consider Weight Watchers, the Dash Diet, the Mediterranean Diet, Dean Ornish's Spectrum, or local hospital programs.
