New high-tech device tricks you into eating less food

Fast Food Consumption Around the World Linked to Health Risks

A growing preference for Western-style fast food in Asian and Southeast Asian countries shows already an impact on their populations health, and not in a good way, according a newly released study by the University of Michigan (UM).

Researchers of the universitys School of Public Health found that Chinese residents in Singapore were at a higher risk of developing diabetes and heart disease since fast food restaurant chains like McDonalds, Burger King and KFC started setting up shop in the 1980s. Prior to that time, American-style fast food was practically unknown there and diseases like these were comparatively rare.

What we found was a dramatic public health impact by fast food, a product that is primarily a Western import into a completely new market, Odegaard said in an interview with the Duluth News Tribune (7/5/2012), a local Minnesota newspaper.

According to the study report, which was published online in the journal Circulation by the American Heart Association (AHA), people who consumed fast food even as little as once a week, increased their risk of developing coronary heart disease by 20 percent compared to those who never touched it. The rate jumped to 50 percent for those who indulged two to three times per week, and to 80 percent for those who went beyond that. Regular consumption of fast food also seemed to lead to a substantially higher risk of type 2 diabetes, according to the study.

Until now, there has been surprisingly little research on potential links between fast food and health risks and that was mainly focused on the United States. Andrew Odegaard, a post-doctoral researcher at UM and study leader said he wanted to look at a Southeast Asian population because of the relatively small time frame since fast food was introduced there and also because the population there is quickly becoming a hotbed for diet and lifestyle diseases similar to the U.S.

In cooperation with the National University of Singapore, the UM team analyzed medical records and questionnaires about diet and lifestyle habits of over 50,000 Chinese Singapore residents. During the studys 16-year follow-up period, 2,252 participants developed diabetes and 1,397 died of heart attacks or heart-related diseases.

Although focused on a relatively small group, the study results could be relevant for future research in public health on a global scale. The consumption of Western-style fast food is really growing in Asia and South and Southeast Asia, in countries where there are a lot of developing economies, said Odegaard in the interview. Critics of the report have called the results inconclusive because many of the applied data were largely based on self-reporting by participants, which is often considered imprecise and unreliable. Also, critics say that unhealthy eating habits tend to go hand in hand with other poor lifestyle choices, such as smoking, drinking and sedentary behavior. Poverty and lack of access to healthcare may also play a role. Singling out fast food as the one culprit would therefore be unreasonable.

Still, it is undeniable that the growing popularity of Western eating styles is coinciding with a dramatic increase in obesity and related illnesses in many parts of the world. Even in places like Brazil, where the government has made serious efforts to limit access to fast food in schools and residential areas to protect the publics health, especially of children, the rates of diabetes and heart disease are going up. Apparently even some of the most stringent existing regulations dont suffice.

  • "what about flax seeds, are they better than chia seeds?"
  • I take plant based Omega 3; arent they better than fish oils?
  • "I heard that raspberry ketones work quickly for weight loss so Im having 6 every day, what do you think?"
  • "What is the best adaptogen to fight stress?"

Focusing on one food in the hope that it will be our food lottery and melt away that muffin top, is similar to forking over that $2 for the lottery ticket. There's no promise that by adding by adding a daily dose into our morning smoothie or taking several gel caps throughout the day that well win; only the premise that this could be the one. It is this thinking that keeps us coming back for more or looking for other types of lotteries to play (or super foods to buy).

On one hand it is encouraging to hear that someone is adding any type of whole fruit or veggies to their diet. What is somewhat disconcerting is when someone who is trying to lose weight believes that eating blueberries on their morning cereal will somehow ameliorate the full-size bag of chips they ate mindlessly while watching N.C.I.S. the evening before.

If you have a lottery mindset and are trying to lose weight, instead of being on the lookout for the next super food, why not try to just eat the original super foods! Focus on unprocessed foods, like real fruits and veggies (fresh or frozen) not the dehydrated type; real sweet potatoes, not the type that come in a sweet potato corn chip" bag; or plain non-fat yogurt where you add your own fruit, nuts or seeds.

Yes, this does take a bit more planning but it gets easier to win. It becomes a new health promoting habit, and the pay-off is a happier you as you see your body respond with a healthier weight. Yes, you can continue to have a lottery mindset yet this time you wins are based on your effort, so why not go for the mega-jackpot of a healthier body!

Bicycling, another way to help our children exercise

As a child growing up, the writer always loved to ride his bicycle. However, he cant seem to recall when or how old he was when he was taught to ride my bike. For the writer it always seemed like a natural paring of fun, freedom and great exercise. Now, the writer is older, and a parent himself trying to teach his daughter how to ride her new bicycle. The writers experience as teacher is that he has to be more patient with his daughter while getting her acquainted with the functions of her new bicycle. I believe every parent needs to try and get their kids interested in bicycling as soon as possible. Simply because this can be a fun way to help your child exercise and get fit and help them break away for the television set.

As seen in the picture, teaching your children to ride their bicycle can be a challenging event physically but well worth the effort. However, the first thing a parent should do is to buy the right sized bicycle, not too small and not too big. The writer recommends going to a bicycle shop versus department stores because of the knowledge that most shop owners have regarding the selection of a properly sized bike. Another reason to go to a small bicycle shop is that they can make the adjustments to the bicycle before your purchase it, something that is not always possible at department store bike departments. Thirdly most small bicycle shops have an extensive amount of equipment such as helmets, knee pads and other accessories needed for the safe operation of the bike. Once you decide on a bicycle for your child and have the right accessories, the next step is to plan the route you will be using to teach your child to ride their bike.

Dolly Parton honors Whitney, who lacked Dolly's positive body image

Dolly Parton, who greatly influenced Whitney Houston in her songs, paid tribute to the deceased singer: "Mine is only one of the millions of hearts broken over the death of Whitney Houston," Dolly said in a statement. Signs of Memory Loss Found in Younger People

Loss of memory and other cognitive functions may start much earlier in life than previously thought, according to a clinical study from England. A modest decline of mental abilities such as reasoning and problem-solving was found in participants who were only in their forties.

For the study, researchers tested 7,000 men and women over a period of 10 years for memory, vocabulary and aural and visual comprehension. The results showed an average of 3.6 percent decline in reasoning skills in both sexes at the age of 45 to 49. 65 to 70 years old men showed on average a steeper decline than women of the same age group 9.6 versus 7.4 percent.

Since the youngest participants were 45 years old when the study began, it is possible that the deterioration of brain functions may commence even earlier, according to Dr. Archana Singh-Manoux, the leader of the research, which was co-sponsored by the Center for Research in Epidemiology and Population in France and the University College London. The results were recently published in the British Medical Journal.

Previous studies on age-related decline of mental health have primarily focused on people in their sixties, seventies and beyond. By limiting ourselves to a narrower scope, we may not yet have gotten the entire picture, according to Dr. Singh-Manoux. A decline of mental capacity doesnt suddenly happen at old age. That variability exists much earlier on, she says.

Researchers still need to learn more about the risk factors that lead to progressive cognitive impairment. There is strong evidence that Alzheimers disease and other forms of dementia is closely related to heart disease, which is typically caused by weight problems, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

We probably underestimate how affected the broader population may be, says Dr. Singh-Manoux. The participants in this study were drawn from a relative homogeneous pool of office workers who were well educated and, for the most part, enjoyed a comfortable life and good health. This is not necessarily a representative profile at a time when so many suffer from obesity and other lifestyle-related health issues.

Although the causes of mental decline are not yet fully understood, experts recommend a number of measures that may not prevent but at least slow down the process. These include regular physical exercise, healthy nutrition, weight control, intellectual activity, avoidance of smoking and alcohol/drug abuse, stress reduction, sufficient amounts of sleep as well as social activities and supportive relationships.

A study conducted by the Mayo Clinic concluded that engaging in stimulating mental activities through reading, discussion, playing challenging games and other interactions can help decrease the risk of cognitive impairment significantly. This does not only apply to the elderly. To prevent even mild cognitive impairment (MCI), it is important to exercise the brain at any age.

This study demonstrates that aging does not need to be a passive process, says Dr. Yonas Geda, a Mayo Clinic neuropsychiatrist and lead author of the study report. By simply engaging in cognitive exercise, you can protect against future memory loss.
