Can we PLEASE change the definition of childhood obesity? Pretty please? Why, you ask? Let the explanation begin. First things first... we must agree that America is in the middle (or the beginning) of an obesity epidemic.

The latest data shows that more than one third of American adults are now considered to be medically obese. What that means is that one out of three American adults now have a body mass index (BMI) in excess of 30. BMI is a way of looking at weight for height. A healthy BMI runs from 18.9 - 24.9. An overweight BMI runs from 25 - 29.9. A fat reduction review can help you construct a clear describe of what you demand to focus on to achieve your fat reduction purpose if you're a rookie; or serve as a reminder for those who are at an advanced or more boost stage of their losing weight program. Most Americans do not even understand the concept of "percentile" - and the folks dealing with childhood obesity unwittingly prove the point. In the field of statistics, the term "percentile" is a valuable tool. In the hands of Washington bureaurocrats, however, it is a blunt edged instrument to demonstrate their ignorance.

When we took standardized tests in school, we got reports back which told us how we scored. In addition to the standard score, we got scored against our peers based on percentile. If we scored in the 95th percentile, it meant that we scored better than 95 percent of those who took the test on that subject. Or, more likely for the average, we scored in the 50th percentile. That means that half the people scored above us and half scored below us. This is a common definition for "average".

If you go to just about any government website dealing with childhood obesity, it will invariably contain the following definition:

"Obesity is defined as body mass index (BMI) at or above the 95th percentile... and children with BMI between the 85th and 95th percentile are classified as overweight."

Then, the website will go on to claim that, depending on which state you choose, the percentile of overweight and obese children runs from a low of 23.1% for Utah and Minnesota to a high of 44.4% for Mississippi. In other words, their definition of overweight and obese is those in the top 15% of the population of children in America... and, wait for it, around 33% of our children fit into to this mythical 15 percent.

It is time to drop the "percentile" part of the definition. Our health care professionals have decades worth of data to determine healthy weights for corresponding heights in relation to American children. Just give us the "skinny" on the reality of the situation. Please. This is a serious situation and needs to be addressed in a straightforward way that is easy to understand for the average American.

Two out of three American adults are now considered to be overweight, and one third are considered to be medically obese. Traditionally, the rate for children has been much lower in the US, with the extra pounds typically coming on after adulthood. If one third of our kids are already overweight now, the overweight and obese rating of the future look to be staggeringly high. We already spend an inordinate amount of money on our national health, but that number will skyrocket in the future due to the traditional chronic ailments which come with extra pounds.

Please, can we take this seriously? Seriously enough to make sense to the average American? Please? The First Lady, Michelle Obama, has childhood obesity as her "issue" - maybe she can help. The future of our nation may very well depend upon it.

National Oatmeal Month

If weight loss is your goal for 2012, there are many lifestyle changes that need to occur for weight loss to happen. One of the major habits that individuals who have lost weight and most importantly kept it off over a ten year period is eating a nutritious breakfast filled with fiber and protein that can fuel any busy morning. Theres no better time to instill this habit than this month, since January is National Oatmeal Month.

Oatmeal is a very affordable grain that provides many health benefits to our body. Not only is it high in fiber which keeps us fuller longer and will curb unnecessary snacking, it is one of the only foods that has been proven to reduce cholesterol.

When choosing oatmeal, it is best to use the long cooking whole oat or steel cut oats, since it will break down slower within the body and reduce the insulin influx within our body. As always, avoid the prepackaged flavors which will contain high amounts of sugar and other additives that will actually cause harm to the body rather than heal it.

Oatmeal for breakfast pairs well with bananas, berries, and heart healthy walnuts providing not only a high fiber filling meal, but also gives the body antioxidants, vitamins and minerals which will aid in the body in stressful situations, hard muscle building workouts, or just to keep us fulfilled until lunch.

Blueberry Banana Oat Bread

  • 1 C lowfat buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 C mashed ripe banana, about 2 medium
  • 2/3 C packed dark brown sugar
  • 1/3 C oil
  • 2 C all purpose flour
  • 1 C old fashioned oats
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • tsp salt
  • tsp baking soda
  • 1 6 oz packages of Driscolls blueberries
  1. Preheat oven to 375. Coat a 9 X 5 loaf pan with cooking spray and dust lightly with flour.
  2. Whisk buttermilk, eggs, banana, sugar and oil in a large bowl until well blended.

  3. Combine flour, oats, baking powder, cinnamon, salt, and baking soda in a separate bowl. Stir into wet ingredients, mixing just until combined.

  4. Gently fold in blueberries. Pour batter into prepared loaf pan.

  5. Bake 1 hour or until browned and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool in the pan 15 minutes.

  6. Remove bread from the pan and cool completely on a wire rack before slicing.

Carbohydrates: 42 grams

Fat: 7 grams

Ricki Lake speaks out about her DWTS weight loss (video)

Monday, Dancing with the Stars contestant Ricki Lake spoke openly about her weight loss this season on DWTS; Ricki Lake said that she has lost a lot of weight from the beginning of her training on the show. She said that she practices with professional dance partner, Derek Hough five hours a day and then she goes home and eats a balanced meal.

"I've lost a lot of inches all over," Lake said to People. "Definitely in my arms, and my arms were particularly one of the things I hated most about my body, so it's nice to see them slimming down."


Lake, 43, said she doesnt expect to ever look like other DWTS contestants Chynna Phillips or Jennifer Grey, but is trying to do what she can.

"I'll never look like these women and these professional dancers," she said.


Lake said: "I'm exhausted. I'm committing to this 110 percent ... coming in with a good attitude ... and going home and eating a balanced meal. It's really that simple."

Last week, Ricki Lake spoke to Mario Lopez about her weight loss and she said that she is wearing a size 28 Paige Jeans and that makes her happy.

Lake said, "I am wearing a size 28 Paige Jeans. Jeans don't lie, and I am just happy!"

Ricki Lake and Derek Hough have been at the top of the leaderboard since the beginning of this season, and they received the first 10s of the season from the judges.

The growing problem of diabetes

Diabetes is long term condition that affects over 25 million people in the United States. According to the Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), seven million people are not even aware that they have the disease. Currently, Alabama leads the nation in the number of people diagnosed with diabetes.

This is a serious situation. Diabetes can have far-reaching affects on ones health, especially if the disease goes unmanaged or undetected. The disease is a major cause of heart problems, stroke, kidney failure, and blindness.

Type 1 diabetes is also known as insulin-dependent diabetes. This type occurs when the pancreas can no longer make insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is necessary for cells of the body use blood sugar or glucose. Glucose comes from the food one eats and is the source of energy for the body.

Type 1 diabetes can occur at any age, but it usually occurs in children, teens, or young adults under 30. If a person is diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, insulin shots are needed everyday. Symptoms of type 1 include: excessive thirst, hunger, frequent urination, weight loss without trying, sudden vision changes, fatigue, and dry skin.

Type 2 diabetes is more common than type 1, especially among older adults, usually over 40. With type 2 diabetes, the cells do not respond well to insulin (called insulin resistance) or the pancreas does not make enough of the hormone. This type of diabetes happens slowly and is associated with being overweight. Because of the increase in childhood obesity, children are also developing type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes can be managed with exercise, diet, and weight control. Sometimes drugs are also prescribed to help the body use glucose more effectively. The Joslin Diabetes Center, a renowned clinic for diabetes care, opened in January, 2011, at Brookwood Medical Center in Homewood to help deal with this growing problem. By educating patients about the benefits of healthy eating, exercise, and medications, the clinicians at the center hope to improve the health of residents diagnosed with diabetes in the Birmingham area. The center will also focus on educating health care professionals in the region.
