Eating Disorders and our Daughters

Media in many forms can be influential to our adolescents as they are attempting to please everyone and fit it with their peers. Some individuals feel that their looks will allow them to have more friends and losing a few pounds will help. Today this picture that media (internet, magazines, television, etc.) is almost appearing unhealthy compared to the beauty of years ago. Some go to starving themselves, others just throw up everything they eat, though there are some who eat compulsively huge amounts of food to make them feel better and then throw up or not eat for a long time after the binging episode. These individuals have been label with a disorder that is called Binge Eating Disorder. With the use of mainstream media they were successful at showing that these outlets do have a strong connection to how females portray their body. The researchers mention the professionals, parents, and the adolescents who find the media to be a cause of dissatisfaction with their body ( Levine & Muren, 2009). The risks that females will go to in order to look similar to these models can be very dangerous, though is it happening to enough females to be concerned? During the teen years, both boys and girls, feel out of place and want to fit in and be cool. Being accepted by their peers is more important than most things at this influential age. Do they take into consideration that this image that they feel the need to live up to is fake, edited with Photoshop, and that the models themselves feel that they have millions of flaws because they are told they have to be perfect? No; Teens do not think of this. The media is referred to, in multiple studies, as a possible cause of this body image issue.

Helping Mold Strong Girls

As we now see that the media does impact the way we see ourselves, we could assume that skewing the medias idea of beauty could possibly help the self-image of your youth. However other studies have linked this poor body image onset to additional things such as personality development and family relations. Several studies have showed that the mother - daughter relationship is very important to a girls body and self-image (Attie, I., & Brooks-Gunn, J. 1989). The majority of these studies suggest that the general psychological wellbeing and the family function has much impact on a females possibility of developing an eating disorder. With support from their mothers the female will have a less likelihood of developing these eating disorders. However this is not a definite answer for this issue. A mother letting the daughter know that they can talk to them and that they will support them is very important to the growth of self-esteem. Knowing that you have someone that loves you for who you are is very important to these young minds. They are confused and have a desire to fit in. Be there for them and remind them how special they are to you.

There are many ways you can reach your diet goals through healthy eating and developing a basic workout plan. It is important to minimize the amount of junk food in the house. Celebrate Thanksgiving, soul-food style, with the Neelys

If youre looking to switch things up this year or simply fill any last-minute gaps in your Thanksgiving menu, the Food Networks Pat and Gina Neely have two recipes for side dishes that will give the turkey a run for its money as the centerpiece of your feast.

Stars of their eponymous TV show, Down Home with the Neelys, Pat and Gina recently released The Neelys Celebration Cookbook: Down-Home Meals for Every Occasion. Packed with recipes for year-round occasions and peppered with personal entertaining tips, the book also breathes new life into two long-time Thanksgiving standbys cranberry sauce and carrots.

While down-home soul food isnt necessarily known for being healthy, these two dishes are still a great way to sneak some extra vitamin A, vitamin C and fiber into your holiday meal. And to give them a bit of a healthier spin, simply try halving the sugar in the cranberry relish and the butter in the carrot recipe. Happy eating!

Cranberry Chipotle Relish (makes: 3 cups)

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 small shallot, finely chopped
  • Kosher salt
  • 1 cup golden raisins
  • 12 ounces fresh cranberries, rinsed
  • 1/2 cup fresh orange juice
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 chipotle pepper packed in adobo, minced

Directions:

Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat until it foams. Toss in the shallot, and saut until soft, about two minutes. Season the shallot with a touch of salt. Stir in the raisins, cranberries, orange juice, water, sugar and chipotle pepper, and bring to a boil.   • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1/4 cup real maple syrup
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsley

Directions:

Heat the butter and olive oil in a large, heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium-high heat. Once the butter foams, saut the carrots until they are crisp-tender, about four or five minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Pour the broth and maple syrup into the pan. Cover, reduce heat to medium, and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove cover, and continue to cook for another six to eight minutes over high heat, until the carrots are tender and glazed with the syrup. Toss with the lemon juice and parsley, and serve.
