Pop Physique DVDs put a hip twist on ballet barre workouts

Pop Physique is popular workout that puts a trendy twist on ballet moves. The workout that started in Los Angeles is now available at home in a three-DVD series.

Pop Physique combines barre-inspired exercises with ballet, Pilates and strength training into a series of strengthening, isometrics, core shaping and stretching.   • Hardcore: This 65-minute workout is probably the most advanced of the group and targets the core as well as every other muscle group.

The DVDs have a retro, 70s feel with neon colors, old-school workout clothes (think legwarmers and sweatbands with ballet leotards) and a sparse set, putting the emphasis on the moves. Modifications are provided for each workout.

Roll your way to fewer running injuries

Whether youre a casual jogger, competitive racer or any type of runner in between, chances are youve dealt with the aches and pains that are an inevitable part of the sport. And as your mileage increases, unfortunately so does your proprotional risk of soreness, knots, tweaks and tears that come with the territory.

Thankfully, however, theres still hope for those of us who like to tempt fate by regularly pounding the pavement. We now have more accoutrements at our disposal than ever before, and one of the best tools for both preventing injury and promoting recovery is one of the simplest: The foam roller.

Athletes use rollers to perform self-myofascial release (SMR), which is a form of massage that helps to relax soft tissues, promote circulation and ultimately stretch out tight muscles and connective tendons that are most prone to injury. Anything that throws your body out of whack (previous injury, poor posture, overtraining, little-to-no stretching, etc.) reduces range of motion and, over time, has the potential to morph into a larger, more chronic issue. Using SMR techniques allows athletes to both inhibit further injury and address underlying problems before they get out of hand or beyond repair.

This is where the foam roller comes in; its the next best thing to a personal physical therapist kneading out the knots, plus its a heck of a lot cheaper and can be done at the gym or in the privacy of your home, wherever and whenever convenient. By using your body weight as resistance, youll slowly stretch muscles and tendons, massaging away tension in specific muscle groups to help them function optimally again.

Rollers range from simple foam cylinders ($6 here on Amazon.com) to sophisticated grid-covered rollers that have zones varying in density for a more targeted massage ($40 here from Trigger Point Performance Therapy). But regardless of which type you choose, the most important part is regular use not only as a resource for working out kinks and stretching, but also for improved core strength, balance and spinal mobility.

For runners, the most common problem areas include the calves, shins, hamstrings, quadriceps, IT (iliotibial) band, piriformis and back muscles. Can you really lose weight without diet and exercise?

What would you say if you found out that you could get a diploma from a major university without ever having to attend a class, do homework or take a test? All you need to do is pay for your tuition and at the end of the term youll receive your degree. Sound enticing?

It may certainly make you look better on paper, but what do you think it would be like trying to find a job in that field? You may initially get an employer to hire you because you appear to be qualified or can finesse your way in, but within a week or two on the job theyll see that you dont know anything and youll be headed out the door.

That puts you right back where you are right now, right? Why? Because you didnt learn the skills necessary to succeed in that profession. You just paid someone else to make you feel like you did.

What does this have to do with weight loss? Unfortunately, quite a bit.

In this day and age, there are health and fitness professionals everywhere that are trying to convince you that you can lose weight and get in shape without having to do any work whatsoever. You dont have to watch what you eat, exercise or change your behaviors. Just send them your hard earned money and theyll make sure you're a success.

Sometimes theyre rather convincing, too. If theyre good salespeople, they appeal to your heart and play on the fact that you want weight loss so bad you can taste it. They say just the right things and do just the right things until youre certain that theyre the answer to your problems. You buy their products or services and expect that your life will be great. Youll earn that diploma from the School of Weight Loss and finally achieve success.

Admittedly, there are some great products and knowledgeable health professionals out there who do have products and services that are healthy and good for you. But, there are also a lot of people just out to make a dollar for themselves. Theyll sell you their plan or program simply because they want to increase their bank account, not because they want to decrease your waistline.

How do you know who is who? Here are some things to watch out for:

  • Promises of excessive weight loss in minimal amounts of time. While this is certainly what everyone would love to see happen, its not only unreasonable but its also unhealthy for your body. If you want to lose weight for the long term, youre going to want to do it by losing no more than two pounds a week. Yes, you may lose it faster in the beginning, but this should be a bonus, not a goal.

How to Burn Calories while Lying Down

It's hot outside. Colorado Springs, especially, is experiencing a very hot week, with temperatures in the mid-90s. I took my dog for a walk yesterday at 9:00am and came home with sweat marks wearing shorts and tanktop (just what you wanted to know, I'm sure).

While summer is great for being outside, temperatures like this make you want to be anything but outside. So, how can you burn calories and beat the heat? The answer may surprise you...

When your body is hot, it takes very little caloric expenditure to be sedentary, because calories are, in their simplest form, a unit of heat. On the flipside, when your body is cold, it requires a lot of energy to try to bring your body temperature back up to normal. As you know, our ancestors experienced times of famine and times of feast. Brown, on their other hand, is commonly referred to as 'fat-burning fat' and is composed of multiple droplets or iron-containing mitochondria. Mitochondria are famous for producting Adenosine TriPhosphate (ATP) and utilizing fat in muscle tissue. To put this in layman's terms: White is just plain fat, and Brown is a calorie burner. Brown fat is what we want!

So, how do we get it? Cold temperatures stimulate Brown to burn fat as glucose (a primary energy source) as heat in an effort to warm the body up. So, the goal is to cool down during these hot summer months. It is not rocket science as to how this is accomplished: Make yourself cold. Take a 10 minute maximum cold shower, put an ice pack on your neck/upper back for 20 minutes (wrap a towel around the ice pack first), drink ice water (especially on an empty stomach), go swim in a lake, sit in front of your air conditioner until you get goosebumps, the list goes on and on. Obviously, you want to be smart when you approach this fat-burning method. Don't overexpose yourself to extreme temperatures for long periods of time. However, on a hot summer day like today, an ice pack on the neck sounds pretty darn good!
