As they enter retirement age, baby boomers are once again at the center of the attention of marketers and industry. In it, a group of retirees from England goes off to India (of all places) to start a new life that appears to be easier and more enjoyable than everything theyve left behind. There is affordable health care, cheap housing, and, surprisingly enough, even job opportunities open up for those who have the courage to seek them. Some things may be a little chaotic, but thats all part of the fun when you no longer need to stress over small stuff.

Unlike for its forbearers, retirement for this generation so we are told is a new beginning rather than a move closer to the end. The defining word now is adventure, which, of course, comes from the Latin term for arrival. Instead of fading away, this is the time to (finally) come into ones own.

This unprecedented optimism about the prospects of old age is also big business. Just look at the self-help industry that thrives on peoples willingness to change their lives and start over again and again. Instead of the twilight zone, the later stages in life are now called the Power Years (to quote one title among countless best-selling books on the subject), a time to break with traditional roles and an opportunity for reinvention and creativity.

Due to longer life spans, economic uncertainty, and the mass rejection of yesterdays model of old age, yesterdays model of retirement is being transformed, wrote the two lifestyle gurus and bestselling authors of Power Years (Wiley, 2005), Ken Dychtwald and Daniel J. Kadlec. Instead of viewing the years ahead as a time of decline, retreat, and withdrawal, we are coming to see this as a terrific new opportunity to reevaluate our lives, consider new options, and chart new courses. The next chapter in our lifes journey can be one of personal reinvention, financial liberation, career innovation, new relationships, and social and spiritual fulfillment.

The authors suggest that the new retirees should consider themselves as ageless explorers who travel the world, start businesses and live life to the fullest at every moment they have left.

Americans are especially receptive for messages like these. The idea that our best days are always ahead of us is an important part of our fabric, both individually and as a nation.

But is all this actually achievable or just wishful thinking?

A much different, one might say, pessimistic, take on aging comes from Susan Jacoby, author of Never Say Die The Myth and Marketing of the New Old Age (Vintage Books, 2011). Jacoby agrees that baby boomers have many advantages that were unheard of in the past.

Many old people today if they are in sound financial shape, if they are in reasonably good health, and if they possess functioning brains can explore an array of possibilities that did not exist even a generation ago. However, she continues, at some point, nearly every baby boomer will have to cope with the shattering of vanity and self-delusion about the capacity to remain, as the song goes, forever young.

To be sure, there is nothing wrong with trying ones utmost to stay physically fit, mentally sharp, socially engaged and curious about the world. But we must also remain realistic about our natural limitations. More importantly, we must be aware that our aging process starts at birth. While this may sound a bit dramatic, it is undoubtedly true that taking care of our well-being is equally important at every stage in life. The healthier we eat and the more we exercise, the better in shape we are, the better we can deal with lifes challenges, the more intact we come out at the other end. Life is what you make it, as the saying goes. So, lets not wait until its almost too late, lets make life as good as it can be right now.

The Healthiest Places to Live in the U.S.

How healthy you are depends largely on the diet and lifestyle choices you make. It also matters how educated and financially secure you are. And where you live not only in what kind of neighborhood but also in which part of the country plays a role as well.

If you are looking for the most health-promoting environment in America today, Minneapolis, Minnesota, is the place to be, according to a survey conducted by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), titled the American Fitness Index (AFI).

The report, which has been issued annually since 2007, measures the state of health and fitness at the community level throughout the U.S. Among the considered factors are opportunities to exercise and be physically active, including access to safe sidewalks and bike paths, athletic facilities, playgrounds, public parks and so on.

When you provide the environment for people to exercise, there is no excuse to be a couch potato, said Thompson. And that translates to lower personal health indicators such as obesity and diabetes as well as poor lifestyle choices like smoking.

Minneapolis was also found to be especially conducive for the health of seniors. According to the United Health Foundations Americas Health Ranking Senior Report, more older people report being in very good to excellent health in Minnesota than in all other states. Also, the poverty rate among the elderly is lower here than elsewhere.

The aspect of senior health in our communities is of growing importance because the baby boomer generation, a large segment of the population, is about to retire. It is also a group of people plagued by considerable health problems, many due to less-than-perfect lifestyle habits. Cooking with holiday spices

What is more mouth-watering at this time of year than pumpkin bread baking in the oven or warm tapioca pudding with a sprinkle of nutmeg? The season of fragrant spices is here. These spices not only add delicious flavors to favorite foods, but do so without adding extra calories, fat, or salt.

First in the alphabet is allspice. This fragrant spice comes from a berry that grows in Jamaica. The aroma is that of several spices (cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg) which is most likely why it is popular during the holidays. Uses include mulled beverages, desserts, and seasonal vegetables.

Cardamom is one that is popular in Indian cuisine. Those who have tasted a dish or any variation known as Carrot Rice have enjoyed this spice. Cardamom is a good partner with cinnamon and used with vegetables such as rice and squash, or with baked goods. Try something new this year with cardamom-spiced party mix!

Cinnamon is a favorite of many, this writer included! This spice is added to desserts and hot beverages, such as bread pudding, quick breads, and warm cider. If cinnamon is a preferred spice, try spreading peanut butter on a toasted bagel and then adding a sprinkle of cinnamon. Or, add to cooked cereals with raisins for a morning treat.

For an afternoon pick-me-up, try mixing a dash of cinnamon with coffee grounds before brewing. The aroma and flavor will perk up a dreary winter afternoon. Dinner is another opportunity for cinnamonsweet potatoes, squash, and carrots all benefit from the flavor of this spice.

Cloves offer a distinctly different taste sensation. Along with cinnamon, this spice is used in mulled cider and wine recipes. Some cooks stick whole cloves into ham before baking for added flavor or into whole oranges as a decoration. Both foods emit a wonderful aroma!

Asia has been home to ginger for over 4000 years. Some may know ginger as a remedy for symptoms of motion sickness and mild stomach issues. However, fresh ginger can be a welcome addition to recipes, too. Check out the Ginger Pumpkin Flan from EatingWell magazinehealthy and tasty, too.

Is Fasting Healthy?

There are a lot of things in the diet and fitness industry that come and go with time. However, one truth has passed this test of time despite constant scrutiny. That is the notion of something called 'Intermittent Fasting.'

First of all, what is fasting? Outside of religious purposes, fasting is going a certain amount of time without food (most of the time this is accomplished in a 24 hour period). Intermittent fasting, then, is the ritual developed of regular fasting, or fasting a certain day each week or each month. A fat reduction overview can help you establish a clear outline of what you need to focus on to complete your fat reducing purpose if you're a beginner; or serve as a reminder for these who are at an intermediate or more improve stage of their losing weight program. Is fasting healthy? Fasting is great for a variety of reasons, but strictly speaking to weight loss, intermittent fasting offers many benefits. Intermittent fasting allows the body to rest from the constant feeding/digesting it has undergone every day of your life and gives your body the chance to burn up excess calories it otherwise would not have had the time to burn up. It also tricks your body and gives it a jumpstart by depriving it of something it is used to. If you are a strict dieter and eat similar foods everyday with similar caloric content, your body has adapted to this way of eating and you will struggle to continue to lose weight, even though your calories remain low. Fasting is a great way to send a new signal to your body and force it to adapt to this new demand.

From an ancestral standpoint, fasting just plain makes sense. Our ancestors were hunter-gatherers often spending their days in search for food. Food was not readily available as it is today and fasting was a regular cycle our ancestors had to go through. As such, our bodies are used to, and ready for, this type of demand. Yet with all the restaurants and grocery stores around, such as Chipotle, King Soopers, and even coffee shops like Pikes Perk, food is constantly on our mind.

In a great article on Intermittent Fasting found here, Mark Sisson, a leader of the Paleolithic movement states, "Numerous animal and human studies done over the past 15 years suggest that periodic fasting can have dramatic results not only in areas of weight (fat) loss, but in overall health and longevity as well. A recent article in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition gives a great overview of these benefits which include decreases in blood pressure, reduction in oxidative damage to lipids, protein and DNA, improvement in insulin sensitivity and glucose uptake, as well as decreases in fat mass."
