A wonder of beauty and high energy that has made me a better person

Finding motivation to be a better person can be challenging for some people especially given the bad news that hits our communitys airwaves regularly. We are living in a society where crimes against other people seem to always be a regular occurrence especially against children, with little air time for good news that maybe happening in our neighborhoods. So it can be easy to understand why some people get depressed and less motivated, there is little happiness coming their way. Well, the writer also had to deal with mostly bad news days until something came his way, first the marriage to his wife and then out of the blue, something unexpected arrived, an angel from above. That angel is his daughter Gianna who just turned three this year.

Yes it 36 months ago, the writer became a better person, a stronger, energetic and more determined individual that he ever thought possible. Bones star Emily Deschanel believes in veganism, even during pregnancy

Emily Deschanel believes in the virtues of her vegan diet, even though she attracted some fire for following that lifestyle during her recent pregnancy. A vegan for more than 15 years, Emily says that "saying no to meat makes me feel stronger inside; I feel aligned with my morals and ethics. I still have to defend myself because people don't understand it. As a pregnant woman especially, people will say to me, "You must eat meat and dairy." You really have to tap into your self-esteem whenever people try to convince you you're making the wrong choice," she told Ladies Home Journal prior to the birth of her child.

Dietary salt--tasty friend or risky foe?

A recently published study has presented more evidence for decreasing salt consumption. Using a meta-analysis of seven studies previously published in the journal Clinical Nutrition, researchers found a positive association between salt consumption and new cases of stomach cancer.

Discussions about salt are not new. Over the years, dietary salt has been implicated in other health conditions such as high blood pressure, stroke, and kidney disease.

Is salt all bad? No. Salt contains sodium, one of the electrolytes that everyone needs to stay hydrated and keep bodily systems working well. And sodium occurs naturally in some foods, just not in high amounts.

Often the two termssalt and sodiumare used interchangeably. The salt in the shaker, however, is actually sodium chloride, which is 40 percent sodium and 60 percent chloride. That being said, problems arise when people consume too much sodium or sodium-containing ingredients.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Americans consume approximately 3400 milligrams of sodium daily. In one teaspoons of salt there are 2300 milligrams of sodium. The daily limit set by the current Dietary Guidelines for most healthy folks is 2300 milligrams, the amount in that one teaspoon. However, if a person has certain risk factors such as being over 50 years of age, African American, having high blood pressure or diabetes or kidney disease, then the recommendation drops to 1500 milligrams per day.

Toss out the salt shaker? Maybe, if one is a heavy-handed shaker! Much of the sodium that we consume comes from the salt in processed and restaurant foods, not from what we add at the table. Soup, salad dressings, processed cheese slices, boxed rice combos, breads, and cereals are all sources of sodium consumed during the day. Add these items to the foods eaten away from home and the milligrams of sodium can skyrocket.

To cut back on salt and sodium, read labels. Check serving sizes and determine how much sodium is eaten at each meal. One can easily reduce the salt and increase the flavor by buying fresh foods and seasoning with herbs and spices instead of salt. If you eat out often, ask about lower sodium options. Those who eat at fast food restaurants may find company websites helpful--MacDonalds offers several suggestions on decreasing sodium intake for their patrons.

Trainer Jennifer Cohen talks about the Weight Watchers Walk-It Challenge

Trainer Jennifer Cohen, recently featured on the CW reality show Shedding for the Wedding, is also a spokesperson for the third annual Weight Watchers Walk-It Challenge, which is May 22 this year. But if you're interested in taking part, get cracking because Friday is the last day to register.

Feed the belly, starve the mind: Overeating can cause memory loss

Overeating is not just linked to weight gain and risk of obesity. A new study also finds that eating too much is associated with an increased risk of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a loss of memory that often precedes Alzheimers disease.

Because researchers do not measure every morsel you put into your mouth, it can be hard to estimate what our actual daily caloric consumption is. But estimates from surveys and previous studies indicate that the average American adult eats somewhere around 2700-3000 calories per day. A fat reduction review can help you produce a clear outline of what you need to focus on to carry out your fat reduction purpose if you're a starter; or serve as a reminder for the ones who are at an intermediate or more boost stage of their weightloss program. This represents an increase of about 500 calories per day over what the average adult ate in the 1970s.

The latest study suggests that those who eat more than 2,142 calories have nearly twice the risk of cognitive impairment over those who limit themselves closer to 1,500 daily. And the more you eat, the greater the risk.

Yonas Geda MD of the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale AZ and colleagues used data from the Mayo Clinic Study of Aging, a continuing study of adults based in Minnesota. Non-demented seniors aged 70 to 89 filled out a questionnaire that accessed how much food they typically ate in a day. Those who ate more calories had a greater risk of clinical MCI, which is patients without true dementia, but do have cognitive deficits such as trouble with memory, language and critical thinking skills.

While this particular study focused on elderly adults, there is evidence that eating too much earlier in life has detrimental effects on brain health as well. For example, a recent study from the University of California at Davis found that poor health as a result of obesity (ie: diabetes, high blood pressure) increased the risk of brain shrinkage. The loss of brain volume led to effects such as decline in executive function, which is the ability to plan and make decisions. Diabetic patients were prone to changes in the areas of the brain involved in both short- and long-term memory.

We know that age is one of the greatest risk factors for dementia, write the authors, but adopting a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet and regular exercise, is beneficial in protecting against dementia along with a number of other chronic diseases.

The first step to reducing calorie intake is to accurately assess how much you really do eat. This can be accomplished through the maintenance of a food journal or log. For at least three days, preferably including at least one weekend day, track every single bite of food that you put into your mouth and calculate calorie intake using food labels or an online food database. Begin gradually reducing intake 100 calories at a time until you reach a goal intake of between 1,500 and 2,000 calories a day (depending upon factors such as gender, age, and activity level).

The best way to gradually reduce calories is to simply reduce portion sizes. Remember that the serving size for the majority of the foods we eat can adequately be summed up by can it fit in my hand. If it can it is most likely one portion. Second, reduce the amount of added fat and sugar in the diet. Replace high-calorie foods with low calorie fresh fruits and vegetables. And dont forget that drink caloric beverages (ie: soda, sweet tea) should be replaced with water.

Something to chew on--Americans are gaining more weight

Last week the Trust for America's Health and The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation released results from a new study: F as in Fat: How Obesity Threatens America's Future 2011. This report ranked all states according to obesity rates. Overall, Alabama ranked second in the nation with 32.3 percent of the population being obese. Mississippi ranked highest of all the states coming in at 34.4 percent, and Colorado was lowest at 19.8 percent.

Clearly obesity is a health problem for the United States, and one that has been plaguing the country for several years. Unfortunately, other diseases and chronic conditions are often more likely to occur with obesity, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and some types of cancer.

Besides the statistics on weight, the report also included recommendations to meet the challenge of increasing weight. Some of these suggestions were:

1. Improve the nutritional value of school meals and vending machine selections

2. Encourage exercise in schools

3. Fully fund and utilize the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program

4. Implement restrictions on marketing foods to children

5. Provide residents with safe and accessible community play and activity areas to encourage physical exercise

While these recommendations are being discussed and ironed out, what can Alabamians do now? Talk to school officials about providing healthier school meals and vending machine choices. Encourage children to get out and play. Better yet, play with the children so everyone gets some exercise, and make time outside and in the park a regular event. Clear the pantry of fatty and salty snacks, and buy fresh fruits and vegetables instead. A fat reducing review can help you construct a clear describe of what you require to focus on to carry out your fat reducing goal if you're a rookie; or serve as a reminder for those who are at an intermediate or more advance level of their weight loss program. Learn Beer Nutrition at Salt Lake City Weekly's Utah Beer Festival

Utah's probably the last place you think would be celebrating alcoholic beverages, but it's happening this weekend in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah and Utahs Green Nutritionist, Isabel Mejia from Food is Your Friend will be there to support Salt Lake City Weeklys Utah Beer Festival- in the name of health research of course.

Wine is often recognized for health benefits, but beer has a great deal of health promoting qualities as well. Although not an essential nutrient, alcohol is a source of energy for many adults -yes, even in Utah. Moderate alcohol consumption by a person of legal age is an acceptable practice, and has its health perks. Knowledge of alcohol consumption and its relationship to overall health is essential to nutrition, and this a fun food and drink event in Salt Lake City to check out this weekend.

Moderate alcohol consumption is universally defined as one drink a day for men and slightly less than one for women. One drink equals a 12 oz bottle of beer and beer samples are less than that so you will be able to enjoy beers in moderation. You will use tokens to sample beers with your beer mug. Beer at the festival ranges in its alcohol content and there will be beers with alcohol as high as 12%. You may purchase additional tokens and have a bite from tons of local Utah food vendors that will be at the festival.

Of course you do not have to start drinking beer to reap the health benefits, but if you do drink alcohol, you might as well know how good it can be for you in moderation:
