More Confusing News About Vitamin Supplements

Two independent studies suggest that taking a daily dose of vitamin supplements may not be as health-promoting as previously believed and may even be harmful. In one study, researchers from the University of Minnesota followed over 38,000 women in an still ongoing survey called the Iowa Womens Health Study. As it turns out, the women who took daily doses of supplements had a higher mortality rate by two and a half percent compared to those who didnt take any.

Our study, as well as other similar studies, have provided very little evidence that commonly used dietary supplements would help to prevent diseases, said Dr. Jaako Mursu, an epidemiologist at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health and lead author of the study report, which was published in the Archives of Internal Medicine (10/11/2011). We would advise people to reconsider whether they need to use supplements, and put more emphasis on a healthy diet instead, he added.

Dr. Mursu admitted that the study was not designed to determine if there was a specific cause for the increased mortality risk of the supplement users. The study did however distinguish between the different kinds of supplements the participants took. For example, the women who took iron supplements had a four percent higher probability of dying. Others who used multivitamins, folic acid, vitamin B6, magnesium and zinc also showed higher rates. Only calcium seemed to have a positive effect, decreasing the risk for most women who took it.

A second study, sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), found that men who took daily a high dose of vitamin E ran a 17 percent greater risk of developing prostate cancer. These results, which were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), came as a surprise, considering that vitamin E was believed to be actually helpful in the prevention of prostate cancer.

The vitamin E study, named the SELECT trial, began in 2001. It was designed as a double-blind, placebo-controlled research project, the highest standard in scientific testing. The initial goal was to find out how vitamin E and selenium (a mineral mostly found in soil) can reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

I was surprised by the results of this trial, said Dr. Eric Klein, an urologist at the Cleveland Clinic and the national coordinator of the study. There really is not any compelling evidence that taking these dietary supplements above and beyond a normal dietary intake is helpful in any way, and this is evidence that it could be harmful.

The increase in health risks could be derived from the high concentration of nutritional compounds that many supplements contain. Most of these micronutrients are present in much smaller amounts in regular foods, so they can become toxic when they are consumed over long periods of time and accumulate in the body, according to Dr. Mursu.

While vitamins and minerals are necessary for healthy nutrition, excess intake can create serious problems. It is also important that consumers understand the differences between the supplements they are taking.

For example, overdosing on water-soluble vitamins like vitamin C and B-complex is possible but unlikely. Excessive amounts pass through the system and get eliminated in the urine.

Fat-soluble vitamins like vitamins A, D, E and K, on the other hand, are stored in fat cells and can eventually build up to toxic levels. Minerals like calcium, chloride, chromium, copper, fluoride, iodine, iron, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, sodium and zinc are absorbed in the body as well and can become harmful to the liver and kidneys. Some supplements can interfere with medications a person is taking and also negatively affect the metabolism of other nutrients.

For these reasons and others, many nutrition experts warn that supplements should not be considered as a substitute for a well-balanced diet, notwithstanding their enormous popularity. Over half of American adults take at least one supplement a day. It is estimated that vitamin and supplement sales in the U.S. amount to $20 billion plus per year.

Its tempting to rely on supplements. In our fast-food culture, it may even sound reasonable to take extra vitamins to make up for nutritional deficiencies. Ironically, the people who use the most supplements are the ones who already eat the healthiest. So, they may want to reconsider. But for the millions of Americans who adhere to a less than perfect diet, it makes good sense to keep adding a basic multivitamin a day.

Jillian Michaels launches new fitness program, Bodyshred, in Canadian gyms (Photos)

Jillian Michaels, of NBC's The Biggest Loser fame, recently launched her new fitness program, Jillian Michaels Bodyshred, in Canada, exclusive to GoodLife Fitness. Avoid the dreaded vacation weight gain

I learned a few things on a recent trip to Chicago that I would like to pass on. Things that will help myself (and hopefully others) keep from gaining weight on vacation.

  • Pay the extra money to get a refrigerator in your hotel room. Those fridges may be small, but you can use them to store things like Laughing Cow cheese wedges, string cheese, yogurt, cut up vegetables, dips for the veggies, fresh fruit, etc.
  • Now that you have all of these great fresh foods, bring them with you when you go out for the day. You can put them in a purse, backpack, or even insulated lunch bag. They will keep you from getting too hungry, especially when you have to wait an hour for a table.
  • Bring your favorite non-perishable foods with you. Make room in your suitcase for things like crackers, bagel thins, sandwich thins, easy to open packages of tuna, and more. You may not be able to find them at your destination.
  • Save money by not eating out at every meal. You paid the extra money for a fridge, so get things like lunch meat, cheese & even small salads. Then you can put together a lunch before you head out for the day, or come back to the hotel room to have lunch.
  • Bring packets of instant oatmeal, and use the coffee maker in your room to heat up water and make oatmeal for breakfast.
  • Make sure you have enough snacks with you for both the trip there, and the trip home. If you're traveling by plane or train, put them in an easy access tote bag. That way you don't have to dig through a carry-on bag that's stored in an overhead compartment, or under the seat in front of you.
  • Be prepared for the fact that meals may not happen at the times that you are used to. Your traveling companions may not be used to your schedule, or you may have to wait a long time to get a table. Fruits and vegetables are perfect for these times.
  • You can splurge on vacation, but try not to splurge at every meal. If you splurge at breakfast, eat lighter for lunch or dinner. If you plan to splurge for dinner, eat lighter for breakfast and lunch. You'll not only feel better, but you won't have to face a huge gain on the scale when you get home.
  • Make sure that you are active. If you are not vacationing somewhere that encourages being active, make sure that you use the hotel gym or pool.   • Drink plenty of water. This can be difficult when you're on vacation. You may need to buy bottles of water and carry them around with you. You could also bring a refillable bottle that has a filter, or even a pitcher with a filter and a refillable bottle. That way you can use the tap water in the hotel, but filter out things like chlorine that you may not want to drink.

With the proper planning you can feel satisfied, avoid fighting with your traveling companions, and avoid gaining weight on vacation.

Five healthy snacks for movie night

Movie nights are filled with snacks of all sorts such as popcorn, candy, or other junk food. However a step out of the box will give not only a great movie night, but will show fellow movie junkies that you can have healthy snacks for a movie night instead. With these five easy and tasty treats a movie night at home can be fun, and still taste good without all the empty calories.

A vegetable tray is a tasty snack to have during the movie night evening. While there are many different types of vegetables to have, picking personal favorites is best. Favorites might include carrot sticks, celery sticks, and cherry tomatoes. Aside from these, broccoli and cauliflower are also an option. These tasty vegetables will give not only a healthy treat but a feeling of crunch that is given from a potato chip, without all the calories. As far as a dip goes, there are many to choose from such as dressing or a cheese sauce.

Trail mix can be salty or sweet depending on which type is preferred. To make a delicious trail mix choices such as mini pretzels, peanuts, almonds, and dried cranberries are an exceptional option to have for a salty snack. If a person is looking for a more sweetened trail mix, purchasing yogurt covered pretzels, yogurt covered raisins, and dried pineapples are optional replacements. Making a homemade trail mix is an easy snack and can be eaten during any time of the movie. To add fun elements try putting the trail mix into individual baggies for each person.

For a sweet and tasty snack to have during the movie, why not try a parfait? A yogurt parfait doesnt have to plain and boring either. Pick out a piece of Tupperware, or a glass dessert dish. Add a bottom layer of favorite fruit, such as sliced strawberries, then a dollop of flavored or plain yogurt, another type of fruit, such as blueberries, some more yogurt and top with favorite granola. This healthy and tasty snack will give a person something delicious and nutritious to eat during their favorite movie again without all the calories.

When people think of movie night they tend to overlook the sweet and tasty treat of fruit. With the amount of fruit that should be consumed in a day, adding a little fruit to a movie night is easy. Paring fruits such as apple slices, grapes, and chunks of pineapple with a fresh yogurt dip is an easy way to have a tasty treat that will please everyone.

An alternative to having individual plates is to put these fruits on to a kabob skewer and dash them with lemon juice to keep from browning and placing many skewers on a plate. Appetizers and snacks do not have to be heavy with fat. For example:

  • Cheese balls can be lighter and yet tasty with low fat versions of cream cheese or shredded cheese. For extra flavor add fresh or powdered garlic, hot pepper flakes, or Italian seasoning. Summer is a great time of the year to spend time outdoors, but it's important to watch out for that heat! If you are a person who enjoys working out, but you're worried about the heat being a problem, take a look at some of these tips to help you beat the heat!

  1. Exercise indoors - On extremely hot days, it might be a good idea to skip the jog around the block and opt for an indoor workout. You can head to your local gym (check out Urban Active) or even work out to a DVD in your own home. If you do end up working out outside, be careful and listen to your body!
  2. Drink plenty of water - Dehydration is a major factor in many heat-related illnesses. A fat reduction overview can help you produce a clear outline of what you need to focus on to accomplish your fat reduction goal if you're a beginner; or serve as a reminder for these who are at an intermediate or more advance stage of their weight-loss plan. In some cases, your body can dehydrate in only ten minutes of outdoor activity, so make sure you are taking in lots of water. Not all liquid is created equally, though.
  3. Cut out alcohol and caffeine - These are liquids that your body does not need. They can actually dehydrate you faster, if you're not careful.
  4. Dress in light clothing - Look for workout clothes with mesh venting and avoid cotton because it will soak up the sweat and leave you feeling heavy.
  5. Go early or go late - The sun is hot, so avoid it when you can. An early morning workout can even help you feel more energized throughout the day.

Pay attention to heat exhaustion warning signs: moist clammy skin, muscle cramps, nausea and vomiting, weakness, headaches, disorientation, and impaired judgment.
