How Does An Apple Keep the Doctor Away? Let Us Count the Ways

A recent study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that the antioxidants in apples extended the lifespan of test animals (in this case, fruit flies) by 10% and lowered the amount of damaging free radicals in their bodies. While we cant be sure that the same effects take place when humans eat a diet that includes apples, other studies do show that fruit and vegetable intake does increase the amount of healthful nutrients we consume on a daily basis and that those nutrients are associated with less disease and greater longevity keeping the doctor away!

The apple, believe it or not, actually belongs to the Rose family of plants. This group of fruits also includes apricots, plums, cherries, peaches, pears and raspberries. Even when naturally grown, the foods in the Rose family are so diverse in their nutrition content that they have many, many healthful properties. Because of hybridization, for example, there are over 7,000 varieties of apples in the world today.

The most recent study, Chinese researchers from the University of Hong Kong, fed a diet to fruit flies consisting highly of apple polyphenols, which are antioxidants that combat free radicals generated in the body that are involved in the aging process and in some diseases, such as heart disease. (Fruit flies are often used in research studies because they share many of the same biological pathways that we do as well as over 70% of the known disease causing genetic characteristics.)

The researchers noted that not only was the lifespan of the fruit fly significantly extended, but the diet also helped preserve their ability to walk, climb and move about. In particular, the apple antioxidants reduced ROS (reactive oxygen species) which are damaging oxygen byproducts believed to be a major contributor to the functional decline associated with aging.

Other recent studies have found apples to be most beneficial in controlling blood sugar, increasing fiber intake (especially when the whole fruit is eaten), improving the bacterial environment in the intestines, and promoting satiety which can lead to eating fewer calories and losing weight. This is in addition to the association with cardiovascular benefits including lowered cholesterol, anti-cancer properties especially colon and breast cancer, and decreased risk of asthma all linked to a regular intake of apples.

When choosing apples to eat at home, though, remember that they do have a downside. The Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit research organization, has found that apples top the list of the Dirty Dozen 12 fruits and vegetables known to have the greatest contamination of pesticides so it is best to choose organically grown fruit whenever possible.     Let's get our plate in shape, that is! March has arrived and with it is National Nutrition Month, coined "Get Your Plate in Shape". So while we usually strive to get in better shape come spring, let's start our focus with our food plates this month! This year's theme is "Get Your Plate in Shape". National Nutrition Month was created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and is sponsored by the American Dietetic Association to remind us to take care of our health through healthier eating. I think March is a great time for us to give a little more attention to our everyday eating habits since spring is just around the corner, and we all know that spring brings new beginnings (hate to rush the year , but Summer and bathing suit season is not too far off either!). So to quote the ADA, let's "Get Your Plate in Shape". How?

    Let's

    • Make half our plate fruits and vegetables. I suggest eating at least 3 different fruits per day, and eating at least 3-5 different vegetables per day (including dark green leafy, cruciferous, and a variety of colors)

    • Switch to fat-free or low-fat milk. I suggest eating or drinking a low-fat dairy product such as yogurt or milk 2 -3 times per day.

    • Make at least half our grains whole. I suggest eating whole grain products instead of white flour products (this includes high fiber cereals versus sugar pops, brown rice instead of white, etc.) more often than not, almost everyday.

    • Vary our protein choices. I suggest eating a meal that is totally vegetarian once a week, and eating fish versus red meat or poultry at least twice per week.

    • Cut back on sodium and empty calories from solid fats and added sugars. I suggest that we substitute a low-fat alternative for a high fat method of cooking or as a condiment more than 50% of the time (jelly versus butter, or chicken stock versus oil in cooking) .     • Go Dense. This is my suggestion to eat a nutrient dense snack instead of a low nutrient high calorie snack ( popcorn versus M&M's for instance) more than 50% of the time. Let's try eating the nutrient dense snack first, then if we choose, let's go for the junk afterward (we're more likely to eat a smaller amount this way) .

    I think healthy eating has many components and does not exclude all treats (You know, those choices that are fatty, sugary, and tasty!). Most people assume upon meeting me that I eat only healthy, and I recently stopped for moment to ask myself if I do. Well, I like to think that I do, meaning that I eat healthy on a regular basis as a way of life. But it does not mean that I eat only healthy foods, or that I only eat something unhealthy once a year (that wouldn't be fun!). But I do try to keep the foundation of my eating healthy on a daily basis with a healthy plate, and some (and some spur of the moment) unhealthy choices in between!

    Mikes weigh-in was the most impressive because he was eliminated in week 2, so he did the vast majority of that fat shedding at home something to think about for people who say massive weight loss can only be done at the Biggest Loser Ranch, with trainers and nutritionists.

    Now that the Elite 8 were chosen, Jeremy was still fuming over last weeks near total mutiny. He was glad that he was back in the fight but mad that he had to compete with everyone else. Dolvett wasnt having any of his nonsense in the gym.

    The final challenge: Its a three-parter. Chris wasnt medically cleared to participate, so shes out so theres one fewer player.

    First part: The seven remaining will start out running a 100-yard dash, which is a piece of cake for the now-fit contestants. Cassandra came in first but the last person finishing is out, which was Kimmy.

    Second part: The contestants have to put together a weighted puzzle, matching foods with their calorie counts. Mike, the Weight-Loss Machine, knew his stuff and came in first, and while Jeremy labored, he still came in second. There was one final spot left for this round and it went to Lauren. Cassandra and Megan were eliminated.

    Third part: Jeremy, Mike and Lauren had to stand on a stump holding a giant golden ticket to the Biggest Loser finale. After two hours (!) they had to stick to one hand, then one foot. Lauren was the first to fall after two hours and 35 minutes, leaving Jeremy and Mike. After nearly four hours, Jeremy was the last man standing, literally.

    But while Mike is out, he has an excellent shot at the at-home prize.

    Jeremy, Conda and Kim left the ranch to awaiting stretch limos that whisked them away. Back at home in Georgia for Kim and Michigan for the Britts (quite a limo ride, eh?), the three had big homecoming reunions with family and friends.

    So itll be Jeremy, Conda and Kim in next weeks Biggest Loser season 13 finale, which is at 8 p.m. and only an hour long. Finales are never only an hour long, but this season, they had "The Voice" and "Fashion Star" to compete with.

    You really want to put this season to rest, huh NBC?

    How's your weight-loss resolution doing? 10 tips from experts

    They say it takes 21 days to make something a habit. We're only 12 days into the new year so that's halfway to the 21-day goal. Is your weight-loss resolution starting to falter? Need some help? Here are a few tips to strengthen your resolve.

The Student Wellness Initiative was created to encourage healthy habits and lifestyles changes in college students who face several issues that can interfere with success: Poor eating habits, drugs, alcohol and tobacco use, stress, anxiety, and depression are issues that face people of all ages, genders and races.

    While the Wellness Fair is aimed at students on campus, the Division of Student Affairs is partnering with the Student Dietetics Association (an organization run by RITs Nutrition Management students) and the RIT-Rochester General Health System Alliance to bring advice and education to all who attend. Health care professionals will be on hand to discuss a wide range of topics including nutrition, stress, personal hygiene, diabetes prevention and anxiety.

    The Student Dietetics Association will be handing out cups of Wegmans Greek Yogurt and literature about the import role of breakfast. Wegmans has recently released a series of flavored greek yogurts, which are delicious, nutritious and a great breakfast for anyone on the run. The fair will also include a question and answer session, a presentation on RITs effort to keep student healthy, literature and education materials about healthy lifestyles, and healthy resources and services offered by RIT.
