Don't ask for a Big Mac here: McDonald's is opening its first vegetarian-only restaurant in mid-2013 in India, reported the BBC News today. Ranking as the world's second largest fast food outlet (Subway wins first place), the Golden Arches is seeking to add to its bottom line by customizing menus to local demand.
Because the Hindu majority and Muslims in India can indulge in meat-free foods, McDonald's hopes that it can tap into the "big opportunity for vegetarian restaurants," a spokesperson told the BBC. "At the moment, India is still a very small market - we just have 271 restaurants in India, and across the world, we have nearly 33,000." Currently in India, McDonald's serves up a menu that is half vegetarian, with its signature dish, the McAloo Tikki burger accounting for 25 percent of all sales. McDonald's most recently attracted attention during the Olympics, when it was slammed by critics as a major sponsor of the London games.
