It's spring, and soon it will be summer -- right? Right. And a few days ago, a friend of mine called with a question about her workout because she is getting ready for her family beach trip. I am a fat-loss expert with a team of DC personal trainers who specialize in getting people in the shape they want in the least amount of time possible. Q: I've been trying the Tabata method and I was wondering if four minutes is really long enough for an effective workout. Is it? Can you really get fit and lose fat this way?

A: It all depends, but let's first talk about the Tabata method for the benefit of people who haven't yet heard of it.

In 1996, the Japanese researcher Izumi Tabata came up with an interval training method which was designed to provide better results from four minutes of high-intensity interval training than you could get from an hour of jogging or other traditional cardio workouts.

Compared to jogging, the Tabata method is better for increasing both aerobic and anaerobic fitness, so it's a good choice if getting better conditioned is your goal (actually, that's hardly anyone's real goal -- what they really want is to look good naked!). However, as you work on this, you'll become more healthy and better conditioned, so it's a win-win situation.

Anyway, getting back to the question, the answer is yes and no. Yes, the Tabata method is effective at burning fat and increasing your overall level of fitness. No, as far as being the best thing to lose fat (though it's still in the top three).

If you want to lose fat, these are the top three things to do:

1 - Eat better. This means eating more healthy, not necessarily reducing calories.

2 - Metabolic resistance training

3 - High-intensity interval training (including Tabata method workouts). Of course, conventional cardio exercises like jogging and walking aren't bad things to do, but most people who are already working out on a regular or semi-regular basis may not see much of a change from these forms of exercise.

The three things listed above are far more likely to help; and a well-designed program of interval training or metabolic resistance training is probably the best thing to do if you want to get the most results out of the time and work you put into your routine.
