As our country continues to gain strength in technology, we're falling terribly short on health and wellness. During the last 20 years, there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States and numbers aren't improving. According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control), more than one-third of U.S. adults (35.7%) and approximately 17% (or 12.5 million) of children and adolescents aged 219 years are obese.

The obesity epidemic comes down to two things, poor education on proper foods, and the prevalence of ineffective diets. Between high fat, low fat, low carb, low protein, how can anyone make an educated decision? The truth is that diets aren't the answer. It's important to acknowledge that nature provides everything we need to be healthy and strong. The real solution to the obesity epidemic is pretty straight forward. Eat less of the wrong foods and focus on more of the right foods. Start by asking, "What percentage of the foods you eat are natural, whole foods, veggies, fruits and grains? How much of what you're eating is processed? Boxed? Fast-food?" By simply making small changes each week, perhaps start with including one new veggie per day in your diet, or adding an extra glass of water during our day. Once your able to start with one change, stick with it until you're ready to add another. Instead of fries, experiment with grains, brown rice, couscous, etc. It takes time, and changing your palette is often the hardest part of it. But the long-terms affects will outweigh the temporary affects of dieting.

In addition to becoming more aware of the foods we're putting in our body, start to pay attention to body signals (disease, bloating, indigestion, etc.) which is a direct result of ingesting too much of the wrong foods, (fat, sodium and sugar).

If you've been on the diet roller coaster, it's time to get off. The opportunity for change lies in discovering healthy food options as the long term solution to obesity. As long as we continue to overfeed our body the wrong foods, we will never gain control over our weight, pure and simple.
