Author Tana Amen was on the Today show this morning to explain her new book The Omni Diet, which hit bookstores on Tuesday.

The Omni Diet (St. Martins Press, $27.99) has the lengthy subtitle The Revolutionary 70% Plant + 30% Protein Program to Lose Weight, Reverse Disease, Fight Inflammation, and Change Your Life Forever. Amen, a registered nurse who works with her husband, Brain Doctor and author Daniel Amen at their clinics, said Thursday that she came up with the plan to heal her own health challenges.

I did not have a lot of weight to lose, but I was ill, chronically ill as a child and into my adult years, Amen told Today co-host Al Roker, who then asked her what the tipping point was to change her diet.

The tipping point was when I was given a laundry list of medications, and I was taking medications to prevent the side effects of other medications, she said. I realized, as a nurse, that many of our patients were suffering from the same things, so I went on a health crusade and developed this program with some great mentors and a a lot of research.

The Omni Diet plan is the program used at the Amen Clinics to get patients into a healthier state, and she says weight loss is a happy side effect of the eating plan.

So what is the eating plan? Like the books subtitle, its composed of 30 percent protein and 70 percent plant-based foods. Theres no dairy, sugars, processed foods or grains, although quinoa is allowed. Amen calls is eating like a gorilla loads of vegetables and vegetable juices, good-sized portions of lean meats (including grass-fed red meats like bison and lamb), moderate amounts of fruits, nuts and seeds and a small amount of beans and legumes (the role of lectins and phytic acid is discussed in the book).

The book also includes exercise but not too much. Overly strenuous workouts can lead to inflammatory responses in the body, Amen says, and that can hinder weight loss. Instead, she suggests fun, energy-giving workouts like Zumba and walking, and muscle-building strength training.
