Blueberries are everywhere this time of year from grocery stores to farmers markets. Some people may be fortunate to have a bush or two of these juicy berries. But blueberries are more than a sweet treat. They pack a bounty of nutrition in every bite.

For starters, blueberries provide about 80 cholesterol-free calories per one-cup serving. These fruits are high in vitamin C, vitamin K, are a good source of fiber, and are an excellent source of manganese, a mineral that is important for bone development and energy production.

Besides offering vitamins and minerals, blueberries are also a source of several chemicals known as antioxidants. These plant chemicals, or phytochemicals, may help reduce the risk of certain cancers and heart disease, and prevent early aging.

Some research shows that blueberries may help keep our brains sharp as we age. According to James A. Joseph, a neuroscientist at the Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University, blueberries are a brain food that provides the most benefit when eaten with a source of omega-3 fatty acids. He recommends eating blueberries with almonds, walnuts, or pecans.

Other proposed benefits of blueberries include lowering the risk of urinary tract infections, reducing inflammation, improving eye and vascular health, and reducing the risk of osteoporosis.

Be sure to note that all blueberries contain oxalates. People with kidney stones should check with their physician to see if blueberries are appropriate to eat.

Ready for some blueberry recipes? How about trying Blueberry-Ricotta Pancakes or Banana-Blueberry Buttermilk Bread? Or, just wash your berries, spoon into a bowl, and enjoy.

As we approach the month of July, National Blueberry Month, make sure to enjoy some of these luscious fruits soon.
