This is Black Friday. Were you out of the house very early to hit the store sales? Many stores were open before midnight here in Albuquerque. People were camped out eating junk food, although one family had their entire Thanksgiving Day meal with them! But today, you probably skipped breakfast in the process, figuring you ate so much yesterday, it would not matter.
Well, you are either now feeling very low on energy (the result of not eating anything for breakfast--and a cup of coffee does not hack it), or you have already stopped at several food places in the mall to grab 'just a light snack.' How could you not? The smell of cinnamon buns was probably wafting through the mall, along with the smells of other foods. You tell yourself--"I just can't stop to sit down to eat lunch. No time. Gotta keep moving and get to those sales." Before you know it, you have stopped at three or four places, even bought some candy to eat on the go for extra quick (false) energy, and probably consumed well over 1,000 calories. The saboteurs are all over the place--made no time to eat breakfast, no time to sit down for lunch, stopped at several places to grab a snack, and nibbled on a bag of candy all day. Just the shopping and crowds can stress people out to the point they turn to comfort food very quickly. Do not fool yourself into thinking that the walking you did, while definitely good, burned off all those wasted calories. Remember, you are still in calorie overload from yesterday!
Is there any way to mitigate the saboteurs? Yes, there is.
First, know that many of the prices you see on Black Friday will be around later in December and certainly after Christmas, and then again over Valentine's and Presidents' Day, with all the sales. You got up early (or never went to bed) for what--a few dollars' of perceived savings? The truth is: You did not save a thing--you spent money! In short, sales come and go, and why not wait until the stores are less crowded if you really need to shop.
Second, plan your shopping day. EAT A GOOD BREAKFAST.
Third, pack a healthy snack--an apple fits into a jacket pocket or purse very easily.
Fourth, know where you can eat lunch that has healthy food.
Finally, EXERCISE either before you hit the mall or after you return.
