Have a plan. Knowing where you want to be is important. Having a strategy that tells you how to get there is imperative. For instance, if your goal is to quit smoking, how do you intend to do that? Cold turkey? By cutting down and then stopping entirely? Decide now what your course of action will be.

Have a plan B. Of course your initial plan is going to be rock solid, but sometimes life has a funny way of throwing you curveballs. If you have a secondary plan in place then youll have a greater likelihood of hitting your goal instead of giving up on it entirely.

Be realistic. Sure, youd like to reach your goal five minutes into the New Year, but unless its something simple, like to floss at least once in 2013, chances are that its going to take you a little bit of time. Prepare yourself for the long haul. Making lifestyle changes is difficult. Give yourself time to adjust.

Expect hurdles. If your goal was easy to hit, you would have done it a long time ago. Be prepared for speed bumps in your journey. For instance, if you set out to drop twenty pounds and your family has monthly get-togethers that revolve around food, be aware that this is going to test your strength and determination. Know beforehand how youre going to handle lifes events that have derailed you in the past.

Set a reward. Working toward something helps keep you going during the rough times. What are you going to do once you reach your goal? Will you take a mini-vacation? Buy a new outfit? Get a massage? Having a visual representation of your goal available will help keep you motivated during the course of your journey of change and self-improvement.
