For dieters without a plan, it can be the kiss of death. For dieters with a plan, this day is no different from any other day of the year. What is the plan? Do you have a plan?
Dr. Judith Beck, author of the bestseller, The Complete Beck Diet for Life, has some common sense tips that we seem to forget about when it comes to overeating on special holidays. You can read all of her tips in her Halloween Survival Guide.

Her tips are common sense and need to be repeated often. And, there is one tip that needs to be highlighted: Candy is available year-around! Yesthat may come as a revelation to some of you, but it truly is. You are bombarded daily with ads (on TV, in magazines, etc.) for candy, and the sweet stuff is in your face at the checkout counter in drugstores, at gas stations, and in supermarkets. It is impossible to avoid seeing candy no matter where you are. Same with all the food you gorge yourself on at Thanksgiving and Christmas. ALL those foods are available every day of the year. But for some reason, we buy it and eat it as if tomorrow all the candy in the world will disappear for good.

For some people, having any candy in the house is the kiss of death, even when they try to hide it. Stores were featuring Halloween candy in August! Would someone please explain why anyone would buy the candy more than two months ahead of the holiday? Most people have very little pantry space to begin with, so the candy is taking up important real estate. And, as a kid, this weight watcher remembers biting into candy that could break every tooth in your mouth, which is what stale and old candy can do. So why buy it so early?

Dr. Beck has some good tips, and to that list needs to be added one morea tip for those who absolutely cannot control their intake of sugar: Do not buy ANY candy to give out on Halloween. If you feel you still need to pass out something on Halloween, try giving moneya nickel or dime for each trick-or-treater. Another thing to pass outbooks! Go to your local thrift store to buy a bunch of used childrens books (sometimes they are just 10 cents each!).What a great way to recycle and enrich the life of a young person at the same time! Lastly, there is no law that says you have to pass out candy. Just leave your front lights off, stay in a back room, and catch up on reading or computer work while you sip a nice cup of hot tea.
