You commit to losing weight and jump in with both feet. But, before you know it, your motivation starts to lag and you find yourself trying to slowly slide each foot back toward safety because suddenly you feel like youre in over your head. You really want to achieve your goal, so why does this occur and what can you do about it?

When people decide to lose weight, its usually due to one of two reasons. Either theyre trying to avoid the pain of being overweight or gain the pleasure they associate with being thin and in shape, or sometimes both.

Pain and pleasure are great motivators. Its like when youre a kid and someone pinches you until you say uncle. No matter how motivated you are to not give in, when the pain gets to a certain threshold, youll pretty much say anything they want you to.

The same applies to losing weight. You start out with great determination that this time its going to be different. Youre not going to give in to temptation. But, as you lose weight and start to feel better, your pain lessens. And, what happens when your pain starts to go away?

Once you no longer feel the urgency behind the need to change, its easy to slip back into old habits. That is, until the pain increases to unbearable portions again and you become determined to lose weight.

How do you stop this cycle?

Staying motivated during any change process requires constant work. Its like brushing your teeth. You cant do it just once and expect to never have to do it again. You need to brush them every morning and every night if you expect to keep them healthy.

The same applies to your motivation. You have to continuously work at it to keep it at a level that allows you to reach your goals. What are some things you can do to help keep your fire stoked?

  • Keep encouragement coming your way. Are you a Facebook person who would benefit from seeing motivational quotes or pictures in your News Feed? Maybe you get motivated reading success stories or books about weight loss? Or, perhaps talking to a friend who has similar goals keeps you on track? Whatever gives you the power to make changes, keep it right in front of your face so that you get constant motivation poured into your veins.
  • Set visual goals. Having a way to see your progress is imperative when you feel stuck in a rut and have convinced yourself that, despite having lost ten pounds already, nothing is working. For instance, put enough colored stones in one jar to represent the total number of pounds you want to lose. Then, as the scale starts to go down, transfer them to the other jar. A fat loss overview can help you produce a clear summarize of what you demand to focus on to complete your fat burning purpose if you're a starter; or serve as a reminder for the ones who are at an advanced or more advance stage of their weightloss plan.   • Start a friendly competition. What better way to stay motivated than to compete against a friend or coworker? Of course, this is only recommended if you can adhere to the friendly part of it.
  • Hire a coach. If you need someone to help you through the process, it may benefit you to hire a health or personal development coach. This is a person that helps you figure out your hurdles, motivates you to reach your maximum potential and holds you accountable; all the things that will lead you to success.
