I moved to Colorado Springs, CO over two years ago, after having lived in Southern California all my life, so moving from Lakewood, CA at 46 ft above sea level to 6,010 ft was an adjustment. We had been here for six weeks when I got the most intense migraine I'd ever had. Nothing seemed to get rid of it. Even Excedrin, my go-to for migraines, didn't take care of it, so I knew something was really wrong. I asked my husband to take my to Urgent Care. Three days before your trip, start drinking more water. The daily minimum amount of water for anyone is eight 8-oz glasses a day. Add three more to that.

Avoid alcohol. Alcohol is dehydrating, and will make your symptoms worse. If you're going to drink alcohol at the ski resort, drink one glass of water for every drink you have.

At your destination, keep drinking water, and avoid strenuous activity the first day.

If possible, gradually ascend to your destination. Spend a day or two somewhere between the lower elevation and the higher one, to give your body time to adjust.

Keep drinking water as you play or exercise.

Before we moved, we hadn't thought about water and dehydration, and how dry it was here compared to Southern California. I had a small taste of altitude sickness when we moved here, and looking back, I'd also had altitude sickness when we went skiing in Big Bear, CA, but didn't realize what it was.

I have been able to cut back on the water to about 8-10 glasses of water a day, but if I go below that for several days, I end up with another headache. Keeping hydrated at this elevation is essential, especially if you are doing any kind of activity.
