The Paleo Diet also known as the caveman diet is a nutritional plan based on the Paleolithic era, popularized in the mid-1970s by gastroenterologist Walter L. Voegtlin.

The diet consists mainly of fish, grass-pasture raised meats, eggs, vegetables, fruits, fungi, roots and nuts. The diet excludes grains, legumes, dairy products, refined salt, refined sugar, and processed oil. Basically eating like our ancestors did 10,000 years ago.

The diet claims by eliminating certain foods a person can reduce their chances of Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, gout, acne and other chronic conditions.

A basic Paleo plan would consist of 3-4 meals a day including:
1. 4-8 ounces of lean protein such as chicken, lean beef, turkey, pork loin of seafood
2. Several servings of multicolored vegetables
3. And good fats from avocado, olive oil or unsalted nuts such as almonds, pecans, macadamia nuts or walnuts

Overall, avoiding salt, processed foods and eating more whole foods including fruits and vegetables is a very useful message to dieters. And with all of its restrictions, it is very likely the dieter will lose weight and may have many health benefits, but the dieter must also be aware of the low fiber and calcium intake which may cause adverse effects as well.

The five sound principles include:
1. Avoiding processed foods
2. Load up on fruits and vegetables
3. Experts believe that the foods available to our ancestors are very different from the food available to us today so a true Paleo Diet cannot be achieved. Our ancestors ate a varied diet according to what was available during the changing seasons and different areas of the world. There is also evidence of grain and legumes that were also consumed by our ancestors that are forbidden by the rules of the modern day Paleo diet.
