In this ongoing column, entitled "Ask a Fat Man", I will take reader questions about any obesity or weight loss related subject they want to ask and give an answer straight from the personal experience of being a one-year banded Lap Band patient and a life long fat man who has lost over 150 lbs with Lap Band surgery. Please note I am not a medical professional and if you are considering any weight loss surgery you should consult a weight loss surgery center in your area.
Today's question comes from Wendy R. from Smyrna. She says "I've heard that after you have Lap Band surgery that sometimes food will get stuck in your band. Is this true? If so, what happens?"
Thanks for writing Wendy. Yes, one of the things you need to be careful of with Lap Band surgery is food getting stuck in your stoma, the small pouch that is made by the band. The function of the Lap Band is that it it acts kind of like a funnel, narrowing the opening to your stomach so food sits near the top for a time, triggering your "full" reflex faster. If you aren't careful, it's easy for food to get stuck in there.
There are three reasons this typically happens. The first is that you eat too fast. When you have Lap Band, you have to eat much slower and allow some of the food to fall through before eating more. If you wolf your food down, you never feel that "I'm full" reflex and won't know to stop until you're stuck.
The second is eating something that swells. Bread or rice will sometimes swell in your stoma and what didn't start out as feeling full can get that way after a few minutes.
The third way is not chewing your food thoroughly. Again, the Lap Band works like a funnel. If you don't chew your food until it's completely broken down into a paste, it can get stuck like a solid blocking a funnel. This is the most dangerous of the three common ways for things to get stuck because it can on rare occasions lead to a trip to the doctor to get the food extracted.
As for what it feels like, it's most definitely not a pleasant experience. Imagine someone pouring a lump of concrete down your throat and feeling it harden in your chest. It's kind of like that. You feel strong pain and pressure in your chest until some of the food either comes up or down, usually up.
Which brings us to the grossest part of the "stuck" experience. A fat burning overview can help you construct a clear outline of what you need to focus on to complete your fat burning purpose if you're a novice; or serve as a reminder for the ones who are at an intermediate or more improve stage of their weight-loss plan. The doctors call it "Productive Burping" but that's sounds too much like a satisfying belch after a meal than what it truly is. When food gets stuck in the stoma, your body tries to get it to shift down by creating a thick mucus layer to kind of grease it through. My Bariatric Nurse at Baptist Metabolic Surgery Center in Nashville likened it to "throwing up a jellyfish" and that's the most apt description I've heard. You start to gag, then cough, then a big wad of chewed food and this clear gunk that's got the consistency of a jellyfish comes up. However gross that sounds to you, multiply it by 5.
If you're considering Lap Band surgery, you will have a few "stuck" experiences. It's inevitable and just part of the experience of learning the limits of your new stomach. But if you follow the directions given you by your doctor and approach any new type of food with the caution it deserves, you can minimize these unpleasant side effects and get the best results from your Lap Band.
