Ever wonder about those ads or flyers you see that offer health screenings? There are usually 8-11 tests, all non-invasive, and the tests take about an hour out of your time. The cost of the tests is usually $200, which is far less than one of them would cost if you were to have your doctor order it, assuming your doctor would.

This health-conscious writer started taking these annual screenings back around 2004. The screenings cover your liver, kidneys, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, abdominal aortic aneurysm, heart, atrial fibrillation, stroke (carotid artery ultrasound), thyroid, and peripheral arterial disease. You also have your blood pressure, pulse, and blood oxygen saturation levels measured.

My story is typical. A fat burning review can help you produce a clear outline of what you require to focus on to complete your fat burning objective if you're a rookie; or serve as a reminder for the ones who are at an intermediate or more enhance stage of their weight loss plan. Promptly after are seven steps that can serve as methods for your special weight loss program. The first thing that one must understand is that losing weight and losing fat is not the same. Many weight loss applications have misled people into believing that it is the same, but most diets and weight loss programs only work by causing a person's body to eliminate more muscle tissue and water than actual body fat, more help please visit The Fat Loss Factor. On one of the screens the results showed numerous large gallstones. I could go through life never having a problem (unlikely) or, the stones could block the bile duct, cause an infection to build up, and put me into emergency gallbladder removal surgery, possibly in a foreign city. So, I got the referral to the surgeon, and bingo, that organ was removed on my time table with laser surgery. I was up and about that same day. Had I gone to my doctor, she would have asked if I was having heartburn (no), GERD (no), stomach problems or cramping (no), or any other abdominal discomfort (no). She would then say, You dont need an ultrasound of your gallbladder. (By the way, she did ask those questions when I told her I needed a referral for a surgeon.) The ultrasound was proof enough for the surgeon.

Many of the conditions we can get have no symptoms or, if there are any, people dismiss them as just a little food poisoning, the flu, or overwork and stress. Not until such conditions reach catastrophic proportions, where major surgery and a long recovery are required, do we do anything--and only because we are forced. Indeed, we have a healthcare mentality in this country that Medicare and all other insurance companies adhere to: We wont reimburse you for preventive and maintenance healthcare ($200 for 11 screens), but we have absolutely no problem paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to pay for surgery after the fact. Last year, costs for gallbladder removal surgery ranged from $12,000 to $49,000. Had I gotten the ultrasound in the lab at the hospital, it would have cost over $700!

Besides identifying potential problems, the screens provide a baseline for you to track over time. In 2004, my carotid arteries showed a minimal amount of plaque build-up. The cholesterol plaques of atherosclerosis are the usual cause of heart attacks, strokes, and peripheral arterial disease (you can get screened for this, too). These conditions together are called cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular disease is the 1 killer in the U.S., causing more than 900,000 deaths each year. My latest screen results show that the build-up has not changed from 2004 (the result of regular exercise and eating healthy).

From May 20 through May 31, RightPath Health Screenings out of Phoenix will be in the Albuquerque area (including Corrales, Rio Rancho, Los Lunas and Bernalillo), at 7 locations. Take advantage of this opportunity to take control of your own health. Be proactive and get those abdominal and cardiovascular screenings. An appointment is necessary, so call 800-770-0240 right now.

FOR MORE INFORMATION: For readers not in Albuquerque, there are several screening companies that travel throughout the U.S. Keep your eye out for them, or go online to search for one coming near you.
