An estimated six to 10 percent of women suffer from PCOS, which is diagnosed by hyperandrogenism, ovulatory dysfunction and polycystic ovaries. Other symptoms that typify PCOS include insulin resistance, hyperinsulinism and metabolic dysfunction. Researchers discovered that reducing carbohydrate intake lowered insulin levels, thereby reducing testosterone. In turn, this reduction alleviated PCOS symptoms.
