Made from premium merino wool grown in New Zealands Southern Alps, items in the Realfleece line are designed to provide instant and sustained warmth, whether worn alone or as part of a full Icebreaker layering system. Realfleece 260 garments are both fashionable and functional; the internal fibers have been brushed to create air pockets that trap air and lock in body heat, while the outside material has a smooth, air-permeable jersey finish.
I had a chance to road-test the Cascade Full Zip jacket ($180), which is designed for Cold to Very Cold conditions. Normally, Id expect a thick layering piece made solely of wool to perhaps irritate the skin after prolonged wear, but the Cascades knit was ultrafine, soft to the touch and never scratchy, even after hours of use. And merino wool never ceases to amaze me, in all kinds of conditions. Its natures miracle material, simultaneously regulating your body heat and releasing vapors (a polite way to say sweat) to keep you dry, comfortable and warm.
