Seed packets are popping up in home improvement stores and at garden centers. Soon tomato and herb seedlings will be available, too. Have you gotten the gardening bug yet?
I have fond memories of my grandmothers garden with all her plants lined up in neat rows. There were glistening strawberry plants, heavy with plump berries, and I would pop a berry into my mouth, squishing the sweet, juicy fruit between my teeth. Yum!
With a little effort, a garden can be a reality for everyone. If you have a small area of land, a balcony, or a patio, you, too, can have a home garden for growing healthy and delicious foods. A fat burning review can help you build a clear describe of what you need to focus on to achieve your fat burning goal if you're a starter; or serve as a reminder for those who are at an advanced or more advance level of their losing weight plan. Promptly after are seven steps that can serve as tips for your special weight loss plan. The first thing that one must understand is that losing weight and losing fat is not the same thing. Many weight loss plans have tricked people into believing that it is the same, but most diets and weight loss programs only work by producing a person's body to lose more muscle tissue and water than actual body fat, more help please visit The Fat Loss Factor.
Why plant a garden? For the price of a few seed packets and some time spent outside, gardening is a rewarding way to provide nutritious foods for you and your family. Gardening will add exercise to your weekly routine, a breath of fresh air, and a break from the usual stressors of life.
According to the Dietary Guidelines, few Americans eat the recommended amounts of vegetables. By consuming more vegetables from a home garden, people could increase their intake of potassium, magnesium, and the vitamins A and C.
Potassium helps maintain normal blood pressure--very important in the current over-salted and over-stressed world. Magnesium keeps bones and teeth strong. Vitamin A is helpful for moist, smooth skin (i.e. fewer wrinkles, ladies). And vitamin C helps wounds to heal.
Another bonus from eating fruits and veggies is that these choices are typically lower in calories than foods made with added fats and sugar. Eating more fruits and vegetables could help Americans reach and maintain a healthy weight and help one fit into that new bathing suit!
The most difficult part of starting a garden may well be choosing which plants to grow. Here in Alabama, residents enjoy a long growing season where just about everything grows! Some favorites are chives, cucumbers, green peas, string beans, green peppers, leaf lettuce, Swiss chard, tomatoes, carrots, and onions.
For those who dont mind sharing with our feathered friends, blueberries and raspberries might be fun, also. The Alabama Cooperative Extension System has more information on gardening in our state. Birmingham also offers several garden centers with knowledgeable staff.
A final note--gardening is a great activity for kids. No matter what their ages, kids can help with some aspect of gardening. They can help choose the seeds, prepare the soil (even with sandbox tools), plant the seeds, and then water the seedlings and pull weeds. When the veggies are ripe, what a better reward than picking and eating out-of-hand!
Fruits and vegetables contribute a wealth of nutrients to our daily intake. Start planning your garden today.
