Seed packets are popping up in home improvement stores and at garden centers. Soon tomato and herb seedlings will be available, too. Have you gotten the gardening bug yet?

I have fond memories of my grandmothers garden with all her plants lined up in neat rows. There were glistening strawberry plants, heavy with plump berries, and I would pop a berry into my mouth, squishing the sweet, juicy fruit between my teeth. Yum!

With a little effort, a garden can be a reality for everyone. If you have a small area of land, a balcony, or a patio, you, too, can have a home garden for growing healthy and delicious foods. The most difficult part of starting a garden may well be choosing which plants to grow. Here in Alabama, residents enjoy a long growing season where just about everything grows! Some favorites are chives, cucumbers, green peas, string beans, green peppers, leaf lettuce, Swiss chard, tomatoes, carrots, and onions.

A final note--gardening is a great activity for kids. No matter what their ages, kids can help with some aspect of gardening. They can help choose the seeds, prepare the soil (even with sandbox tools), plant the seeds, and then water the seedlings and pull weeds. When the veggies are ripe, what a better reward than picking and eating out-of-hand!
