McDonald's Corporation recently announced that it was going to add calorie counts next to their menu items. This practice has been in place in California for over a year. With the pressure from government agencies working to cut obesity, McDonald's acquiesced and will start this practice next week.

However, a couple of questions remain. Will calorie amounts prohibit fast food consumption? Will it have an impact on obesity? In my humble opinion the answer is no, on both fronts. The truth is that people are going eat junk food, most commonly because it's accessible and inexpensive. For busy folks, it's a deal. Although some consumers may opt for the small fry vs. the large, or a single cheeseburger vs. a double, at the end of the day, they're still eating an unhealthy source of calories. Ideally, I'd like to see a healthier menu created with a focus on content. Until then, I would rather have a homemade sandwich with whole grain bread, dark green lettuce, fresh tomatoes and peppers and turkey for 350 calories vs. a processed burger.

Fast food is really quite fascinating. It is very carefully designed to get people more or less "addicted". Fast food lovers get used to the high fat and sodium combination and ultimately crave foods with those ingredients. Basically, their palette becomes acclimated to it. Additionally, there are so many additives, chemicals and unknowns in fast food that in reality, calorie count becomes the lesser evil.

Will this new addition of listing calories, will it have an affect on obesity? Again, fast food restaurants draw in people who spend a lot of their eating hours on the run. Simply cutting out a few calories here and there is not going to cure the obesity issue. Further, people will often reward themselves by eating more because they assume they're saving calories. A common trap. "Well, since I didn't get the fries, I'll get a small shake." And calories add up without consumer acknowledgement.

Personally, I'd like to see every single ingredient that is in every menu item. But that would be impossible as the list would be so incredibly long. Between what goes in to their sauces, cheese, bread, meat, etc. A fat loss review can help you construct a clear summarize of what you demand to focus on to complete your fat burning objective if you're a beginner; or serve as a reminder for the ones who are at an intermediate or more enhance phase of their weight-loss program. Applying are seven steps that can serve as suggestions for your own weight loss plan. The first thing that one must understand is that losing weight and losing fat is not the same thing. Many weight loss plans have misled people into considering that it is the same, but most diets and weight loss programs only work by resulting in a person's body to reduce more muscle cells and water than actual body fat, more help please visit The Fat Loss Factor. the list would be too long to print and for the average Joe or Jane, indecipherable.

I think for many people, they really don't want to know how many calories they're ingesting much less what ingredients are in the food they're eating. They simply want to be fed quickly and cheaply, and fast food fits the bill.

Although the effort to raise awareness by McDonald's is admirable, until fast food restaurants make a real push towards serving whole, real food, I'm not impressed. I'm thinking this may simply be a marketing strategy to improve their sagging sales.

Your best bet is still what you can make at home. You know what's in it and very likely the calorie content will be less and the ingredient quality will likely be much greater. Simply eating out less and paying closer attention to calories AND ingredients may be the real solution to the obesity crisis.
