Birmingham residents, like those in several U.S. cities, can join in the fight against cancer by volunteering for a national study. This Thursday the American Cancer Society (ACS) will hold a rally to encourage residents in the Birmingham metro area to volunteer for a long-term, nationwide study. By participating in this study, volunteers will help researchers discover what causes and prevents cancer.
The ACS hopes to recruit 1,000 participants from the Birmingham-Hoover area to help meet the ultimate goal of 300,000 volunteers from across the nation. By enrolling cancer-free adults from varying backgrounds, lifestyles, and localities, the ACS hopes to find how to decrease the risk of cancer.
The kickoff rally in the Birmingham area will take place Thursday, July 19, at 10:00 a.m. Attendees will gather at the American Cancer Society office, 1100 Ireland Way. Mayor William Bell and Dr. Alpa Patel, principal investigator for the study, are scheduled to speak.
If you cant make the kickoff rally, you can still join the study. Volunteers can enroll Aug. 22-29 at local YMCAs, the Birmingham Crossplex, and at the Levite Jewish Community Center.
The study is enrolling men and women, 30 years of age to 65 years of age, that have never had cancer (not including basal or squamous cell skin cancer). A fat reduction overview can help you build a clear summarize of what you demand to focus on to accomplish your fat reducing objective if you're a rookie; or serve as a reminder for these who are at an intermediate or more improve level of their losing weight program. Applying are seven steps that can serve as methods for your special weight loss program. The first thing that one must understand is that losing weight and losing fat is not the same. Many weight loss plans have tricked people into believing that it is the same, but most diets and weight loss plans only work by leading to a person's body to burn more muscle tissue and water than actual body fat, more help please visit The Fat Loss Factor.
Participation is easy. As is typical with studies of this kind, participants will read and sign a consent form, complete a survey, have basic measurements taken (such as weight, height and blood pressure), and provide a small blood sample. Over the course of the study, participants will be asked to complete study questionnaires at home and will receive mailed updates about the study.
Thats it. There are no pills to take, no treatments to receive, and no changes to your daily routine.
The study, funded by the American Cancer Society, is long-term. Be prepared to receive questionnaires and updates for at least 20 years. But the time commitment on a yearly basis is minimal.
Long-term studies like this are important in research. These studies track people over time, noting changes in health and lifestyle that may impact disease. For example, past studies have suggested links between cancer and cigarette smoking, obesity, diet, and hormone replacement therapy. With such information from population studies, more detailed clinical research can then carried out with a specific goal or research question in mind.
Why participate in this study? Personal testimonials range from losing family members to cancer to now being free from cancer and encouraging other to help find cures.
Generations to come will benefit from the information that this study will gather. Need more details? Check out the American Cancer Society Cancer Prevention Study 3 (CPS-3).
