The human body is an amazing mechanism. The arrangement of our muscles, bones, joints and ligaments allows for a variety of complex movements, all controlled and coordinated by our central nervous system. When properly trained and balanced, the human body is capable of incredible feats of strength, agility and endurance as seen in our top athletes. However, when neglected or improperly trained, the most basic of daily movements can become a struggle and even cause a great deal of pain.

It is widely understood that exercise is the foundation for building and maintaining the function of our bodies, but many people are unclear of what type of exercise is most beneficial for them. This is evident when you look at most traditional gyms in which the majority of the space is taken up by isolation training equipment. The typical machine circuit that you will find at most gyms consists of fixed motion equipment such as Cybex or Nautilus in which you adjust the seat height or handle position, select the weight, and then pull or push through a range of motion controlled by the mechanics of the machine. While this style of training can be effective at increasing the size and strength of one muscle area at a time, there are several drawbacks:

  1. Artificial range of motion - When you are using traditional fixed motion equipment, the path of the resistance is controlled by the machine which is designed for the average person. The problem is that everyones bodies are a little different. Since the machine only moves one way, your body has to adjust its natural movement pattern to fit the machines path. That means that the strength you are building will most likely not apply to your movements in the real world.
  2. Lack of stabilizer activity - The idea of isolating a muscle means that you are shutting off the other muscles that would normally be activated in the real world version of that movement. For example, when you sit down on a chest press machine, you are already shutting off your leg and core muscles just by sitting. Plus, since the path of resistance is controlled by the machine, there is no reason for the rotator cuff muscles that stabilize your shoulder to do any work. The combination of over strengthened prime mover muscles and weak stabilizers is one of the leading causes of injuries.
  3. Calorie expenditure - The reason that most people need to burn more calories is because they have to sit most of the day for their jobs. So, why would you go to the gym and sit down on a machine!!?? The more muscles you can activate with each exercise, the more calories you are expending per minute of work. Instead of using a chest press machine, do some push ups. Now youre working your abs, hip & shoulder stabilizers and your chest all at the same time. If you want a real challenge, try doing a single arm dumbbell chest press lying on a stability ball and see if you can count all the muscles you are using.

There are certain programs in which isolation training can be beneficial. When rehabbing an injury, these types of isolation machines can be an important way to strengthen specific areas. However, while the physical therapists will use isolation exercises at the beginning of a rehab program, their ultimate goal is to reintegrate the injured area with the rest of the bodys natural movements. In bodybuilding, isolation training is necessary because the primary goal is to increase the size of the prime movers. However, bodybuilders spend a lot of time in the gym doing several different exercises for each muscle group in order to keep proper muscle balance.

The bottom line is that aside from a few specific applications, there is no reason why the average person should waste their limited gym time sitting on machines. A properly designed, integrated workout program will not only help you build a stronger healthier body and avoid injury, but also get you to your weight loss goals faster.
