Biggest Loser trainer Bob Harpers latest book, Jumpstart to Skinny (Ballantine Books, $26), out today, is meant for shedding pounds in a hurry be it a wedding, a vacation or just a giant jumpstart.

He discussed his book Monday morning on the Today show.

Its a plan. Its three weeks, Harper told Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb. I know that these women want to get in their wedding dresses, in their bathing suits right now, and this plan is going to get them to their goals.

This is Harpers third book, and while the first two books, Are You Ready? and The Skinny Rules, focused on the long term, Jumpstart to Skinny is designed as a three-week jumpstart.

One tip of Harpers doesnt involve calories or exercise its cutting way back on salt, which will help shed excess water weight.

Short-term very low-calorie dieting can produce a whole bunch of positive changes that will keep you from getting fat again, he writes. The trial is not over, and the jury is certainly not out. Its still hearing evidence. But, again, the more I observe my own clients and the more I study, the more convinced Ive become: in the short run, its the way to go.

But at least you wont have to forgo your coffee. Unlike a lot of diet-book authors, he actually encourages it. Its a huge benefit, he said Monday. It helps your metabolism; it helps your performance in the gym. Im a big fan of caffeine within moderation, of course.

Quinoa Rancheros
(from Jumpstart to Skinny by Bob Harper with Greg Critser)

  • Olive oil spray
  • 3 cups chopped fresh spinach
  • 5 egg whites, lightly beaten
  • cup pico de gallo
  • 1/3 cup cooked quinoa
  • avocado, sliced

Heat a medium skillet over medium-high heat. Spray the hot pan with olive oil spray. Add the spinach and cook until wilted. Set aside on a paper towel to absorb the liquid.

Respray the pan and scramble the egg whites. Add the salsa and spinach to heat through.

Place on top of the quinoa, add avocado and enjoy.

Makes 1 serving at 270 calories, 26g protein, 24g carbs, 7g fat, 6g fiber.
