Women who want to be slim and shapely for their wedding day can now lose those extra pounds quickly with low calorie tube feedings. Yes, that's right, tube feedings.
Being a dietitian, I dont know whether to laugh or cry. Here are the details.
The K-E diet was first offered in Europe and is now available in the United States, thanks to Dr. Oliver R. DePietro, MD. According to the K-E Diet brochure, patients are fitted with a narrow tube that is inserted into the nose and then passed down to the stomach. The tube is attached to a bag that contains the feeding solution which the patient carries around, along with a small, battery operated pump. This set-up enables a slow and continuous feeding, 24 hours a day.
According to the K-E Diet brochure, patients can lose about 20 pounds or one percent of their body weight in a 10 day period.
The tube feeding is very low calorie, supplying just 800 calories a day. (In contrast, dietitians usually recommend at least 1200 calories for weight loss to ensure adequate nutrient consumption.) Besides restricting calories, the K-E Diet provides protein and fat but no carbohydrates. Due to the lack of carbohydrates, the body develops ketosis and burns off body fat.
So what is ketosis? Normally, the body burns carbohydrates for fuel. On this type of low calorie-no carbohydrate plan, though, the body eventually turns to fat for its energy source, and ketosis occurs. The result is a build-up of chemicals called ketones that are produced when the body breaks down fat for energy.
Ketosis has some side effects, such as loss of appetite, constipation, nausea, and lightheadedness. More serious side effects include kidney failure, kidney stones, and gout. Patients on the K-E diet must be checked three times a week in the clinic and also test their ketone levels daily. Patients must also report any diabetes, kidney failure, or high blood pressure before treatment.
On this diet, patients have lost weight for the short term. A fat reducing review can help you establish a clear outline of what you need to focus on to carry out your fat burning purpose if you're a starter; or serve as a reminder for those who are at an intermediate or more enhance phase of their weightloss plan. Promptly after are seven steps that can serve as guidelines for your personal weight loss program. The first thing that one must understand is that losing weight and losing fat is not a similar thing. Many weight loss applications have misled people into considering that it is the same, but most diets and weight loss applications only work by resulting in a person's body to lose more muscle cells and water than actual body fat, more help please visit The Fat Loss Factor. More importantly, though, do the patients keep the weight off? That question is not answered in the promotions for the diet. Rather, the brochure states that after 10 days you will be in the perfect place to continue a more healthy relationship with your food.
What's the bottom line? Tube feedings are beneficial for those who cannot eat because of health issues, not for people who want to lose weight for a special occasion. Does a healthy person need to walk around with a nasal tube just to lose weight? Instead of spending $1500 for 10 days of tube feedings, meet with a registered dietitian to formulate a healthy eating and exercise plan that you can live with for the long term. A diet that is high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and low in processed, high fat foods is the way to go.
