Zumba Fitness kicked off its Great Calorie Drive with a party Wednesday night featuring American Idol season 11 winner Phillip Phillips.
The three-month program, which runs through June, challenges Zumba fans around the world to donate 2.6 billion calories burned through activity, which will equate to 3.5 million meals toward hunger-relief efforts.
Phillips song Gone, Gone, Gone will be used in a public service announcement for the initiative, first announced last summer at the Zumba Convention in Orlando, Fla.
Attendees at the New York event, led by celebrity Zumba instructor Kass Martin, lit up a Sustainable Dance Floor that used the dancers movements as an energy source to equal 75,000 calories and donated to the initiative during the hourlong Zumba class.
Zumba participants worldwide will be dancing off their calories in classes worldwide, and Zumba will donate the equivalent of the average amount of calories burned per class (750 calories, for up to three classes) to Feeding America and the United Nations World Food Program.
You can keep track of your calorie-burning efforts with the new Zumba calorie-counting phone app that lets you check in to Zumba classes and donate calories.
You can download the free Zumba Fitness Mobile App for iPhone and Android phones from iTunes or Google Play. You can then check in to the nearest Zumba class (theres a location-based class finder) and you can share on social media with the hashtag ZumbaGCD.
