Last night on the G4 network, the show X-Play checked out three of the newest "exer-games" and put them to the test, asking an exerciser and a personal trainer which one they thought was the most effective.
Sara Underwood, co-host Blair Herter and personal trainer Blake Baietti put three games on three platforms to the test:
- Biggest Loser Ultimate Workout for the Xbox Kinect
- EA Sports Active 2, for the Nintendo Wii
- Get Fit With Mel B, for the Playstation Move
(FYI: All three of these games are also available on different gaming platforms.)
While both exerciser Underwood and trainer Baietti rated the Biggest Loser game the highest, they also really liked EA Sports Active 2. Another thing to take into account was that Underwood said she liked the Kinect's "no-gizmos-required" freedom, so the other games on the Kinect could also be worth a second look.
But neither was impressed with the former Spice Girl's workout game, noting the low intensity and lack of proper form.

- Biggest Loser Ultimate Workout for Xbox Kinect really is a tough and varied workout. You can do regular workouts with Bob or Jillian (Team Bob!) or you can participate in Biggest Loser-style challenges to test your skills and sweat at the same time. Some of the floorwork is tough to do if you can't keep your eye on the TV, as it scores you on how well you perform the moves.
- EA Sports Active 2 for the Wii and Xbox Kinect are both great workouts. - Your Shape: Fitness Evolved for Xbox Kinect features workouts from Men's Health and Women's Health magazines and has a fantastic interface. You can choose between personal training, fitness classes or play multiplayer gym games -- something that was a big hit with the junior testers.
- Dance Masters for Xbox Kinect is fun if you like clubby, techno dance games. It's more of a beginner workout and doesn't require precision moves.
- Dance Central for Xbox Kinect is fantastic if you want to pick up mad dance skills while getting a great cardio workout. And you don't have to jump right into the dance contest -- there's a Break It Down mode to learn the precise steps. The music selection is also superior to other dance workout games. And while it's a dance game you can perfom it in workout mode to see approximately how many calories you've burned. Favorite video game workout by far.
