Imagine arriving for an annual check-up and seeing a farm stand where people are buying fresh potatoes, cucumbers, strawberries, and peaches on their way out of the clinic. For patients and staff at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and the university medical center, this convenience is a reality.
The New Leaf Farm Stand is a project credited to UAB president Carol Garrison and coordinated between the UAB Employee Wellness and the UAB Hospital Food and Nutrition Services Department. These departments work with Ellen Riley who operates the mobile farmers market.
The market is set up at various locations throughout the week. This schedule gives patients, visitors, students, and staff from across the university and medical center access to fresh fruits and vegetables.
Considering the latest projections concerning America's battle with obesity, it is encouraging to see a medical center offering easy access to healthy food. This is a great way to help patients and staff put healthy eating recommendations into practice.
No matter where one finds the farm stands, all share common benefits.
- Produce is locally grown and freshly picked. This improves taste and increases nutrient availability.
- Access to fresh produce improves diet and health.
- Organic produce is often available.
- Food is bought directly from the producer with no middleman involved, which may mean better prices.
- Money spent stays within and strengthens the community.

- Shopping at farmers markets provides a great opportunity for children to learn how food is grown.
An added bonus is that increased funding enables more farmers' markets to accept food stamps from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and coupons from the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program. Senior citizens benefit through participation in the Seniors Farmers' Market Program. (Alabama has a dedicated site for seniors.)

- Ask questions. The sellers will be more than willing to give you cooking and preparation tips on unfamiliar foods.
- If you shop on weekends, get there early to get the best selection and avoid products that have been in the sun for awhile.
- Take perishable items home soon. A cooler with ice in the car helps to transport these items safely.
- Some markets accept cash, credit card, and checks.
