Cookies, candy, pop, French fries, and potato chips. Are these the foods that come to mind when someone mentions the word snack? Snacking has become a way of life for many people. The busy-ness of life can force even the most health conscious person to partake of a fast food snack now and then. Unfortunately, some of the foods chosen for snacks are high calorie or high fat delights that offer little nutritional value. However, there are other foods that make tasty snacks and provide needed nutrients.

So what are some wise food choices that can curb our hunger? When the mid-morning or after school munchies attack, fresh fruit such as sliced apples, juicy oranges, or diced cantaloupe are satisfying and sources of vitamins, minerals and fiber. A little cinnamon sprinkled on the apple slices or peanut butter on the side adds flavor and variety. How about crunchy baby carrots, celery sticks, or cucumber slices with a low-fat dressing as a dip? Don't forget about air-popped corn--an all-age favorite! Even whole wheat cereal squares or whole wheat pitas with reduced-fat cheddar cheese cubes will silence the growl of an empty stomach. And all of these are as easy to prepare as they are to eat!
