A new study by researchers associated with the University of California at Davis has shown that obesity or diabetes during pregnancy is linked to an increased risk of developmental difficulties, including autism in children.

Although the relationship between obesity or diabetes and autism is not clear and needs further study, researchers recommend that women pay special attention to their eating habits before and during pregnancy.

The study highlightsif not for a mothers own well-being, then for the well-being of her baby[her need] to make any lifestyle changes she can to reduce her risk of obesity and diabetes during pregnancy, states Paula Krakowiak, the lead author of the study.

According to the Defeat Diabetes Foundation (DDF), eating healthy is one lifestyle change that can help reduce the risk of developing diabetes. The foundation's recommendations include eating five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables each day.

Adding fruit and vegetables to a meal or snack is convenient and easy. Here are some tips to increase your intake.

  1. Have a green salad every day. Use the dark green leafy varieties of lettuce and spinach for a bigger nutrition punch. Add any leftover, cooked vegetables like green beans, corn, and peas to the salad, too. Or add some dried fruit for a chewy texture.
  2. Keep raw vegetables cleaned and cut into strips or slices in the refrigerator. These will be ready then for snacks or for adding to brown bag lunches.
  3. Add vegetables to your main dishes such as meatloaf, tomato sauce, lasagna, casseroles. Use one-half cup grated carrots for a thicker tomato sauce. Or, chop the vegetables and use in place a meat for a vegetarian meal.
  4.
