Yesterday while picking up some DVDs on hold at the local Albuquerque library, I saw some waiting to be shelved. And there, just shouting to me to pick it up, was a DVD of Billy Blanks's Ultimate Boot Camp workout. I knew I needed to try it out. After taking it home and doing just that, I am sure that about the only people who could get through it are the Marines--unless you have been exercising vigorously on a regular basis!
In recent years there has been an onslaught of exercise videos with "boot camp" in their titles, perhaps because they appeal to people wanting to get a 'ripped body,' or perhaps are seeking a challenge in their exercise routine. This weight watcher has tried several of them, only to be disappointed in workouts that really do not live up to the hype on the package or drive you to max performance. This writer is a fan of exercise videos, and anything from Billy Blanks is bound to take off inches and burn calories. His Ultimate Boot Camp DVD workout does not let anyone down, either. This workout is 55 minutes of non-stop (with emphasis on the non stop) aerobics, that works your upper body, lower body and abs. By the time you finish, assuming you get that far, you are sweating and exhausted, but in a good-feeling sort of way. It gives you that neat exercise "high," too.
Is this workout equivalent to today's real military boot camps? Well, if the real ones were like this video, there would be many more fit service members, that's for sure! As a disclaimer, having gone through military training many years ago, it was a piece of cake for me, and I have no idea what the training involves today. Perhaps someone can enlighten the rest of us. Being a regular exerciser, I loved this workout and got through all but a few minutes of it.
